This is good game

After playing my first campaign as USA I have to say – I LIKE THIS GAME. There is big development step after vanilla SR20.
Cold war is very well balanced. There was lack of in game depth and general idea of game play in SR20. And it wasn’t balanced in any way. Cold War has everything what it needs. Good and balanced market, improved diplomacy and spheres of influence. You can’t touch it and you can’t see it but you can FEEL it while playing the game and this is great new feature of SR Cold War. I’m sure SR CW fits any taste of strategy gamers. The business and political management lovers ( like me ) will find great economical system. Military lovers will be able to feel the Soviet power or American nuclear madness.

Any engine of any game has it’s own limit. It looks like SR engine has reached it’s limit in SR-CW. Game is optimized at it’s max and if you start game without units that game speed go fast for a log time ( and you have time to enjoy the best of SR-CW during this time ).

There are some new features that make CW different from SR20. Strategic pool is nice. It is good if you build 100+ missiles for silos. But it’s still more convenient to manage some units individually ( such as SSBN’s ).

Another 5 cents about Space Race. The combination of tech + building = achievements is the good way to go. Unfortunately, I couldn’t achieve Space Race victory because of game speed.

Well, to be more objective I have to say something that would be great to improve in upcoming patches.

The biggest problem of all SR series is – massive army build up. AI builds so many units without any reasons and then it goes outta money and resources. It would be great if the game limits AI somehow from massive army build up. For example – during defcon 5 ( lowest ) AI can build ( and buy ) only 10% of its reserves quantity but at defcon 1 ( highest ) – 100%. That just an idea I’m sure there could be another solution but this is really needed. Such limitation will only improve game speed and micromanagement for units.

I stopped playing my campaign as USA in 1956 when I have influenced almost all nations and achieved 70% of Space Race. I had just some SSBN’s. But Canadian army was all over my territory because there were no space for Canadian army in Canada :) Their planes were circling around all over my territory :))) I can imagine how many thousands of units are Soviets + Chinese have if Canada has so many. All this slow down my speed to unplayable situation.

Another very inconvenient moment of the game is units speed. Some ships and planes can’t cross long distances over ocean because it doesn’t go together with refuel tankers. It makes refuel tankers ( planes and ships ) kinda not practical for the game. I’m sure, the game would have better military tactical advance if it would allow to create armies or navies that move with the same speed.

But generally – this is very good. You definitely can enjoy it. Battlegoats did very good job!

Little bugs I found ( playing with the patch 71 ):

1 – My game crashed after I load my saved games while playing my campaign for USSR. My USA campaign saves worked ok. I donno what was the reason but game crashed right after I load saved game and press speed button. I will try another USSR campaign and let you know if you want.
2- There are a lot of modern units which one are really ahead of the time. Soviets discovered Tu-95, S-400 triumph and some other modern units in 51 or 52. So and Americans got B52 very quickly.
3- When spies return after their missions back to home they stuck in my capital and stay for nothing.
4- I’ve noticed that some piers work incorrectly. Units can’t go to water and just stuck. For example, if you play as USA and can’t ask your guys in Germany to come back on American territory. It’s just stuck there. Another example is that I can’t build some ships in some naval fabrics for unknown reason ( I started 2 projects at the same time in different ports and one was completed but the second not even started. So I remove it for another factory and it was good to go ).

Hints for not experienced players:

1- scrab all units ( no matter what country u play, USA or USSR ). It will increase speed of time turning. You going to discover and build new modern units fast any way.
2- Scrab military buildings – it will give u lot of industry goods that is so needed for the beginning of the game
3- Try to build electro and industrial factories first. Oil and coil is super cheap so it’s much better if you invest your valuable industry goods into ind.goods factory and just buy coal and oil from the market on $$$.

Played a lot this game since it's release I'm surpised by how good it is despite it's few flaws. Lack of tutorial is compensated by playing with a small country to learn the tricks, but the main problem remains the lack of industrial goods on the word market which is seriously crippling for small countries, you have to sacrifice everything to make sure you have some and build only one factory at time despite you've loads of money to buy them from foreign nation. Playing as Taiwan in 1957, I managed to become one of the 20 best GDPs of the world by carefully building up my industry and social spending. However I did all I could to be the US' best friend they refused all the time to give me even 8 tons for 16 millions bucks... is it designed or just a bug ?

The second issue is probably the lack of graphics to explain how your own country actually develops and to show resources production, all the forces available in your country and their current status etc... more infos would be welcome to analyse a bit better the situation.

Also the manual doesn't explain how some resource such as industry goods are working. There's a dark blue bar and a light blue what do they actually mean ?. The same about the Industry Controls Pannel which isn't obvious.

First, thanks! Glad you're enjoying it.

The commodities system has actually changed very little since Supreme Ruler 2020 (Since SR2010, actually) so give a read to some of the information about production on the SupremeWiki, that should answer many of your questions. Main difference is that some of the data is now in the tooltips of the production bars. The "two tones" on the bar means you're not at max capacity (blue) or not managing to meet your demand (red) for that commodity.

Regarding the industrial goods, many of our veteran players on the Dev forum are applauding this but we can recognize it might add to the challenge for new players. Try using Scneario Settings - Resources - Abbundent at the lobby when starting your game. This will give all regions a large initial stock of all commodities. Should make it much easier to get the initial facilities built. We will be examining this for a possible balance change in future updates.

2- Scrab military buildings – it will give u lot of industry goods that is so needed for the beginning of the game

This seems very gamey. I hope the developers have made it so the MAR falls through the floor & any potential rivals in your local sphere (minor power) or completing Superpower (U.S.S.R/USA) launches an invasion of the defenseless country. I know I would if presented with the oppotunity.

The game continues......

So now I´ve played until end of 1954 and that happens:

1) North Korea is gone, but China has taken over SouthKorea -> Annexed
2) The Czech are going rampaging in SouthEurope -> Annexed Greece and from there to Asia -> Annexed Turkey. They had, thanks to the proxy wars, unlimited help from all other Warsaw Pact States and these countrys were easyli taken.

I tryed to stop this with my little army and dowed the Czechs. Should better let them go, after 2 days of initial wins for me the whole Warsaw Pact Army seems to step in. Had to reload.....

3) PR China dowd SouthVietnam and is slowly invading it. I´m not sure how these Proxy Wars work, because there is a massive french army sitting in HongKong, doing nothing. Meanwhile the french in Indochina get killed by chinese forces. Is this how it should work?
4) FRG is doing well.....I have now 9 Land fabrications, 2nd Air fabrication is under construction and 10 more IndGood factorys are online. My army is much bigger than in my last post, but still I can´t do much with them. No match for the Warsaw Pact. Need more time for build up.
5) I´m now a dictatorship, I was a few minutes away from the game, let it running, come back and missed the whole election thing.......Nice game speed!!!
6)Still struggling with naval transport. Thought I had to load my Mountain Infantry onto the Freighters, but this doesn´t work. Can send my troops with the SeaTransport order to a friendly seaport, they get autmaticly some Transportships for that journey....Now I wonder how amphibic landings work?

Anyway: Somme questions here:

1) Why are conquered countrys not handled as colonys?
2) Is there a way to support especially guerrilas in Turkey?
3) Can I liberate Turkey or is this country for the Rest of the game gone?

@TheUNDERTAKER

1. We are looking at this for a possible future feature. It's been somewhat controversial since once decolonization started no one as able to successfully colonize anymore.
2. State department - actions will increase "unrest" in areas not loyal to Cz. This means they are more likely to appear in Greece or Turkey but you can't target which.
3. gone. Changes to #1 would make this different which is why we're still considering making those changes.

I haven't had time to get too far into a game, but I have to say initially this 'feels' easier to find your way around than SR2020. I can't pinpoint why but it seems less intimadating.

Game over: Crashes to Desktop

Unfortunately the game refuses to pass over the 6. Nov. 1954 It always crashes and returns to the desktop.

Last things that happens was a war in Korea, where NorthKorea (already eliminated) launches a massive offensive against South Korea (already annexed bei China)....
And a declaration of war between Israel and Egypt. But after both events the game continues for a few days. So this might not the reason.

But two countrys that are not existing fighting a war must be a BUG ????

If you have a savegame that consistently crashes at a certain point, please send it to us and indicate the date where it crashes. Zip and e-mail to support@battlegoat.com. Reference ticket 15907.

You said "launches a mass offensive". Do they actually have units? It has already been reported that a message about the Korean war happens even if one side is dead but all we heard about was a false message, nothing more. Please elaborate.

Done

@Balthagor:

Sorry, I wasn´t very clear in my text. There was only a message saying that this massive assault happen. In Korea all is quiet, all land is as before the message pops up in chinese hands. It´s only a message.

As for the E-Mail, it´s on the way....currently uploading the save game file....12MB. Ouch, I saw that to late had attached 2 files.......

After annexing Israel, Syria got attacked by Turkey. OOPS. That's kind of tough.

Playing the USA, everyone hates me. The only war I was in is when NK attacked SK, and SK called up our MDP, and I honored it. Even the UK is now "concerned". What impacts diplomatic relations? Also, getting warnings about the UN not liking me.

Did you dowd NK?

I think your Casus Belli against North Korea was not high enough if you declared war on NK. You should have send only troops to South Korea as assistance. These troops can attack NK troops and even conquer NK without a DOW from you to NK. Only if you have a 100% Casus Belli the UN, your friends and neutrals will ignore the DOW. That´s what I observes in my games.

But how can we honor the mutual defense pact we have with South Korea when playing USA ? I mean, this pact force the player to "officially" declare war against the attacker, so there is now "proxy war" possible.
