Titular kingdoms will take 100 years to assimilate a dunchy into it and titular empires will take 100 years to assimilate a kingdom into it. For assimilating titular duchies make sure that you own the whole of it, that the titular kingdom is your primary title and that you don't own the kingdom that it's a part of de jure.

Change map-mode, then back again.
 
My current King is terrible and now everywhere has either smugglers, highway robbers or a theives guild. They are hurting my nation bad. Will they go away when a better leader comes to the throne? And how do you move your court?

How do I set a character of 'special interest'? I've seen it mentioned a few times and can't work out how to do it. One dynasty member is promptly assassinating the heirs of another dynasty member the minute they've been born - I don't even know they've been born until I find out he 'was rumoured to be involved in an assassination attempt'. So I want to set him as a 'special interest' character so I at least find out when he has children. Separate issue, but I don't get any notification of the plot, just when they die.

On a related note, can characters still assassinate other characters if they've been locked up?

Yes. They'll be taken away via event one at a time, though. So it might take some time until the new ruler has brought things in order.

Right-click someone's portrait and a pop-up will appear on the right and the left. Right-click the pop-up on the left. Click the 'STAR' to set them as 'people of interest' in your side status bar. You'll get various events for this person as they come up.

CLARIFICATION EDIT:

RIGHT-CLICK CHARACTER PORTRAIT (FACE)
RIGHT-CLICK the LEFT POPUP (ordinarily brings up the personal/stats page for that character)
LEFT-CLICK the STAR POPUP (out of the three that appear)

Reverse the process to UNSTAR people.

Is it possible to get your king (as in, the character you are currently playing) to abdicate? My current king is a total douchebag and the minute he got the throne, half of my vassals declared war - he's craven, slothful, hedonist, lustful etc. in other words he has just about every negative personality trait going. I don't have any allies I can bring in so there's literally nothing I can do but sit back and watch my provinces declare independence, without having a hope of being able to fight them. Help!

Did anyone declare war with a depose liege CB? If someone did, surrender to him.
 
I apologize if this information is elsewhere, but can someone give me a quick rundown of how to capture provinces (and specifically to claim them)?

Playing as the King of Sweden, I eventually sieged Uppland to the point where my army was just sitting in the province (which had solid diagonal lines throughout) and no longer sieging anything. Is the only way to capture / claim land by steamrolling all the provinces and then hoping to get the land you want in the peace treaty?
If there is a guide to this aspect of the game or any information I would really appreciate it, as Denmark declared war on me over a claim on a single province at the north of Sweden, and after some time the war ended "inconclusively" and yet Denmark suddenly had like 10 of my provinces, cutting my Swedish empire in half. Can anyone help explain this to me?

You must have a legitimate claim before you go to war. When the war ends, it does not matter which provinces you occupy, you will only get the ones you went to war for. For example, let's say that I have a claim on London, and I press those claims. I then occupy six English provinces during the war, none of which are London. The enemy surrenders; I get London and only London in the peace treaty (provided that I win).

You probably lost the war if you lost provinces. I have never had an "inconclusive" war ending, but by the wording of it, I am going to assume that you lost the provinces by some other means that conquest. Defection, perhaps? If the war was very long, and you had your vassal levies raised the entire time, your vassals may be suitably upset, and they might rebel against you.
 
So, I've decided I don't want the headache of my extended Islamic family as vassals. I've lost three Sultans in about five years, and IS NOT FUN. Is there any way for me to grant independence to my vessals, or at least transfer them off to the Califh so he can experience the joy of dealing with my brood? Or am I stuck murdering them all, reclaiming my titles, and then giving them away?
 
What does the possessed trait do? I need to give away a bunch of titles and I have one guy in mind who has good all around traits with the exception of possessed. Should i risk it and make his a mayor?

They do ... insane things. Randomly assassinates people. Stuff like that. It's less pronounced in a mayor, but still rather problematic :p
