So, in the latest dev diary, we are told there are three "types of government", monarchy, oligarchy and democracy. In the above screenshot, which I have cropped, we are shown all the icons for the governments in game - with the "moral democracy" government type selected. This approach seems to me to derived from Classical Greek political thought, rather than the cluttered and poorly defined political ideologies of today. That is a good thing, I think, since it seems more timeless and universal, as befits a game set far in the future. Aliens won't have heard of Marx or Mussolini.

In the text of the diary, two specific types are mentioned, namely the military dictatorships and "Divine Mandate monarchies."

Your Ethos will limit your valid selection of government types, but there are always at least three to choose from; an oligarchy of some kind, a democracy or a monarchy. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. For example, in monarchies there are no elections, and you do not get to choose your successor when your ruler dies (except in Military Dictatorships), and if you die without an heir, all Factions in the empire will gain strength (oh, and there may be Pretender factions in monarchies...) On the other hand, each ruler may build a special "prestige object" in his or her lifetime, named after themselves. For example, military dictators can build a bigger, badder ship, and Divine Mandate monarchs can build a grand Mausoleum on a planet tile. Of course, both ethics and government types usually also have direct effects on the empire.

Lets break this down, and see what we can work out from the information we have been given.

First, lets look at how things are laid out. Seems to me, the top row of icons represent monarchies or more broadly regimes with a single ruler, note the lone figure of a military leader at a podium and a mediating figure who appears to be enlightened in some way, some kind of prophet or high priest. I think this is the "Divine Mandate" system of government. The symbolism of a crown in a lightbulb is very obvious, as is the significance of the Double-Headed bird, which in our earth cultures means only one thing, the Imperial legacy of Byzantium/Rome - indicating Empire. The second row done is Oligarchy, i.e. rule by a small and select group, as represented by what appears to be a group of generals next to a group of Catholic priests (note the signature neck collars) and a cartoonish Mr Moneybags capitalist at the other end. The third row down is Democracy, rule-by-many, firstly because we know it has "Moral Democracy" selected and because of the obvious symbolism of ballot papers.

Additionally, from left to right, it seems to progress from military type governments on the far left (all generals), to theocratic (all priests) to what appears to be some kind of technocratic or scientific category in the middle, as hinted at by atomic symbol. Next is what appears to be the "moral" category, where we have "Moral Democracy", which is the one government we know most about. I'm not really sure what is next. The eagle, as I said, looks very Imperial, the capitalist obviously very capitalistic, but what exactly the circular arrow on a ballot is supposed to be is hard to tell, though obviously it is some manner of democracy. Provisionally, I think this is some kind of "wealth" based category of governments, so I've named it capitalist after Mr Moneybags the Space Capitalist for now.

Heres a chart that I think sums it up. What do you guys think?

I'd say this chart is pretty good. Is my understanding correct that the crown in a lightbulb stands for enlightened despots? I would say that the ballot with a circular arrow represents some kind of corporate democracy where the elected leaders are just puppets for corporations(or maybe it's parliamentary democracy where you have an election each time a majority is lost, hence a circular arrow because people go to the polls quite often) I think the ballot with a straight arrow symbol represents people electing some kind of idealist/progressive figure who has a vision to move the empire forward

I guess that'll give us:
1. Military dictatorship
2. Papacy
3. No idea. NWO? Rule by AI?
4. Benevolent/Enlightened monarchy
5. Empire
6. Stratocracy. Or a military junta.
7. Council of the Faith?
8. Technocracy
9. No idea about this one to be honest
10. Plutocracy
11. Military democracy: only military/those who've performed military service can vote (think Starship Troopers)
12. Religious democracy: only those of the Faith can vote
13. Scientific democracy: only smart people can vote
14. Moral democracy
15. Modern liberal democracy perhaps?

I think the middle monarchy gov is some sort of Eco-Monarchy where the king is the Steward of the planets and must preserve their ecosystems.
Edit: also the Moral Oligharchy choice may be some sort of "hippie" council which is pacifist but excludes membership of the elect to a select few

I think you will be mostly correct. Looks very logical to me

What will be your first choice of government then? I'm partial to some kind of military or religious regime myself.

Some form of "Democracy" More or less, a Republic.

I think the military democracy, Eco-monarchy or the technocracy would be interesting. I wonder if there will be some sort of mercheant republic too

Divine Mandate, gogo Space Pope. Hopefully the preset Humans still let you choose a government form.

I think the general idea is that if you start with the preset humans you can edit them to be practically anything you want and you'll still start on earth.

I'm planning on going with a Isolationist Technocracy, probably of the oligarchic flavor. Oh, don't mind us, just passing through and collecting black hole data, not giving a shit about galactic politics...

I think the last column might be generalist form of governments; like an Imperial Monarchy, Plutocratic Oligarchy and probably a Representative Democracy (the arrow circles around, which could mean representation of some sort, I guess), like no specific greater purpose other than government.

Divine Mandate sounds fun, get to make entire worlds dedicated to my tombs.

If they can make a xenophile, pacifist and spiritualist empire interesting and competitive (in its own way) to play, then that will be interesting to try out...

I was thinking the same thing. I bet their real strength will be in forming alliances/creating a federation around themselves. They're not imposing militarily, but all their good friends might be.

Reactions:
Some of these government types are locked. I guess the reason is the choice of Ethoes choosing an Ethos either unlocks or locks some types. Would make sense for if Pacifism is your ethos, having a militaristic government would be strange.

The choice of Pacifism and Xenophilism allows the creation of Moral Democracies, Empires, Capitalist states, etc. But this same choice disallows militaristic, religious and technocratic governments.

I guess right collumn is open for everyone, representing traditional empire, oligarchy and democracy. Arrow probably means that government changes regularly, but democracies are hardest to guess.
Collectivist/Individualist probably switches monarchy/democracy rows, while militarist/pacifist and spiritual/materialist switch their collumns. Xenophoby probably does nothing here, because you haven't met any aliens at the moment.
Guess I'll go for Space Curia on first run, though I'd prefer Best Of Their Kind oligarchy.

someone posted it on #5th DD. This is pretty accurate!

I am not sure about the third column: I don't see anything suggesting ethical government types. The Oligarchy one seems very much like technocracy and the monarchy looks like some shady kind of government.

I would change the third column into progressive as all 3 icones in that column are progressive symbols.

Here is my names on the colums based on sid meiers alpha centauri social values (from left to right):

Power (or might)-Fundamentalism (or spiritualism)-Progressive (or knowledge)-Moral-Wealth (self serving is a good name)

If we go by the name of the ethics we get the flowing names for the columns:

Militaristic-Spiritualistic-Materialistic-Pacifism-Unknown (maybe generic option as suggested)

If they can make a xenophile, pacifist and spiritualist empire interesting and competitive (in its own way) to play, then that will be interesting to try out...

It seems like the idea is that these will be alot more stable then the militaristic xenophobes technocracies which may have an easy time at getting powerful but will likely break due to internal issues while its opposite are slow but stable.
