Maybe the effects depend on how Xenophobic or Xenophillic your species is? Xenophobic species might get a dissent increase/loose stability while a Xenophillic species might have the opposite reaction

Xenophobic pops should become more militant and in favour of war when hey meet others.

Not just the event of meeting an alien, but what actually happens should be important. Like, it should definitely make a difference if an alien just shouts untelligible giberrish at you, or if they have been observing you for long enough to construct a language, or if they just slaughter you wholesale without a word. It'd be a pretty important event if, when you met your first alien species, they just destroyed your scouts.

It is not so much the fact that is frightening, it is when you start to ask "why?" that has the troubling implications.

I think there should definitely be technologies which cannot be unlocked until you start meeting other species. In fact, developing good diplomacy techs should require that you engage in diplomacy early and often.

Yeah! Catgirls FTW!
Would be a funny scenario.. first mankind reches the stars, creates other species and then the big crash... few thousand years later mankind again reches the stars and finds their creations..
totally funny :3

That is the plot for Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis.

That is the plot for Halo.

It's the plot for a lot of things. Ender's Game actually came to mind.

It is also the plot of the Mirror Universe in Star Trek.

Except, the Humans take out the more advanced peaceful Vulcans!

The de/stabilizing effects ought to be dependent on government type, social structure, ethics etc. A xenophobic race might not start as xenophobic, but become xenophobic when it encounters xenos?

i think, it should also be based on the type of alien discovered, an extremely militaristic and Xenophobic civilisation is far more disturbing than a spiritual peaceful and Xenophile one

We all know what first contact is going to be like for the vast majority of us.

"Greetings Aliens! We come from Earth (or whatever planet)! Now tell me.... do you have a flag?"

Though seriously it should be a big event with people going slightly mental about it. Or full on mental, what ever floats your boat

I also hope that ethics are dynamic.

You should have to wait a period of time after first contact while your scientists establish a means of communicating with them. During this time there should be mass panic. Your government can take advantage of this in a variety of ways. Encouraging people to become settlers so you can colonize the galaxy first, for example. Or joining the military so you can defend yourselves. If your species is peaceful, then you should get some sort of bonus when you finally establish a means of communication.

They've said that they are gonna be - pops will shift sometimes etc.
i#m just not sure what Xenophobic even means before you encounter anyone...

I think the important thing about first contact if we are trying to relate it to what is likely should we ever experience it in reality is that it's probably not going to be a ship flying across the vast emptiness of space and running into another allien ship. Satellite ships maybe but otherwise I think it's more logical for it to be, "we've intercepted some means of communication that seems to be coming out of blah blah sector", so then you go explore blah blah sector some more.

"I'm not sure if other life exists in the universe or what form it might take, but I'm 100% sure I don't like it and want nothing to do with it."

Sounds to me like a belief perfectly consistent with the human condition. I'm hoping that the way pops react to such events as first contact can be diverse and varied, rather than strictly scripted and event driven. I sort of hope this game can capture some of that feeling Vicky got at where pops seemed like an organic thing well within the player's ability to influence, but just outside the player's ability to control.

There are a lot of different ways a first contact situation could go. Maybe the aliens are roughly on par with us technologically and similar to us, so we trade, maybe they are light years ahead of us and decide To subjugate earth, and assimilate us into their culture, European colonisation style. Or maybe they are more advanced than we can possibly believe, and have known about mankind for some time, but have absolutely zero interest in meeting such a backward and inferior species as humans?
