EU4 - Development Diary - 25th of October 2016

Hello everyone and welcome to another Europa Universalis IV development diary. This time we’ll go into the main flavor of the 1.19 patch, which we call Denmark.

Well, why do we call it Denmark? Well.. First of all, we’ve added lots and lots of Dynamic Historical Event to Denmark, bringing them up to par with other european majors. Skåne also starts with the Skånemarket, a large bonus to the fish produced in the province. We have also added a few new provinces in Jylland, while also increasing the development of Denmark as a whole.

And as you can see here, the Danes get a nice new unit in 1.19 as well..

Norway also got an improvement, getting their map revised to include a fair amount of new provinces, and a wasteland in the center of the mountain range, to make the country more easily defended against the vile swedes. We also gave them a huge chunk of new Dynamic Historical Events, making playing them a fair bit more interesting.

We also improved the political mapmode, as so many had requested, so we now show the terrain map where there has been no colonisation yet, so you’ll have some more informative eye-candy while playing

One other thing to mention today is the fact that we added a fair bit more instructions to the AI for your nation if you crash or are forced to stop playing for a while in a campaign. The following options now exists for your convenience.

  • Ignore Decisions -Yes/No
  • Embrace Institutions - Yes/No
  • Develop Provinces - Yes/No
  • Disband Units - Yes/No
  • Change Fleet Missions - Yes/No
  • Send Missionaries - Yes/No
  • Convert Culture - Yes/No
  • Add/Remove Cultures - Yes/No
Stay tuned.. Next week we’ll talk more about forts, peace options and tradegoods, amongst other things.

You should change "Ignore Decisions" to "Take Decisions" so that it's not the opposite of every other option, with yes meaning that the AI will do something and no meaning that it won't.

When you say Skane starts with the Skanemarket, does it lose it at any point? If, for example, some Swedes come through?

Fish don't care who owns the land. The market declined mainly because of climate change and because new fish stocks were found and traded with elsewhere. And really, herring just doesn't taste all that great - if there's cheap'ish alternatives people would have taken them and they did.

Because you are giving more attention to Denmark and Norway, are you also going to add in dynamic province names for Nordic settlements in the Americas? They are set up to become major colonial powers and it would give them more flavor if they go that route.

This map change is terrible for performance. Having all those trees and eyecandy permanently rendered is going to completely butcher game speed. Especially when you play in the new world, when most of the game is speed 5. I paid for a game that runs in my potato, and i wont dish out 2k bucks in an upgrade just because '''trees are pretty'' just so i can play the game again.

Also, pretty much no info in this DD. Everything, except the small MP tidbit, was already on Twitter.

Not everyone uses twitter though :p

Wish the devs would respond to the questions about the political map though

Uncolonized provinces looking the way they do does makes sense. However my problem is the fact that the devs seemingly ignored the innovation made a few patches back about wasteland being filled in with the color and name of the country surrounding it. Did you disable that feature in the pictures simply to display all of the changes in as few pictures as possible? I think many of the issues raised here would be addressed in that question alone.

But really its Switzerland that needs its own one.

With something close to the anti-expansion policy of the Prussian government. As the Swiss grow, their government should be less effective/profitable.

Which is historical though. Throughout this period the Danish Norwegian navy was one of the largest and most powerful ones

Point was less about Denmark-Norway and more about how the Netherlands accounted for nearly half the trade in Europe in the 17th Century and how other countries can easily surpass them. Naval force limit is heavily dependent on port numbers, Denmark-Norway will have 4x the amount of ports and the same +50% naval force limit bonus.

Let me add to the chorus that hopes we can turn off the landscape in the political map mode. I prefer to be able to see the political outlines distinctly and pretty much never use the terrain map-mode.

Regarding the Denmark changes, why not also include Alborg in the north (the horizontal strip above the peninsula) and then have Denmark complete and solid to play with? :)

While the new political mapmode is…interesting, I find the juxtaposition of realistic-looking terrain with large blocks of solid saturated color a bit jarring. It's weird because I like it in the Norway screenshot (that looks cool), but not the North America one, so…I'm conflicted.

It's not 'large blocks of solid saturated color'. You can tell in the North America screenshot that there's terrain showing. Blackfoot in the upper left, Cherokee in the lower right (the green one above Creek, with the mountain range making the actual text unreadable...)

Looking good, Scandinavia! Great to see Norway being touched upon, as well as Denmark, both were lacking and now maybe Denmark can do some punching on its own? Please guys, change up Denmark's ideas to give them some good land-based military NIs. Right now, they're just so weak with their low-tier naval ideas - even navally, their ideas aren't good with the exception of the force limit.

Fix Muscovy/Russia's terrible ideas and maybe we can talk about fixing those of tier 2 and lower backwaters...

Could these options be added to single-player aswell? Especially the development one.
