EU4 - Development Diary - 29th November 2016

Hi everyone and welcome to another development diary for Europa Universalis IV. We’re now in the phase where we have just released the big post-expansion patch and there is not really all that much new stuff to show as development is starting on the next expansion.

These development diaries tend to be not so popular, as we don’t reveal much as it simply isn’t finished. So what can we say in this development diary? Well, some vague hints, and some indication of the future?

We have taken a lot into account that large major improvements and thematically connected features are what you prefer. Currently we have four more major expansions more or less fleshed out, with themes that you have requested a lot and that I feel you will love. The next one will have a focus on X and Y.

One thing that you have noticed with first Mare Nostrum and then with Rights of Man, is the concept of States In 1.19 we even added thicker borders between states. The reason for this emphasis on States is that it will give us the possibility for more mechanics in the game, while reducing micromanagement somewhat, and still have allow for fun maneuvering during wars. In the next expansion, we’ll be doing further enhancements to our states.

One cool little thing we’re doing with 1.20 for those of you that like to mod the game. We’re adding support for modders to add modifiers to cultures and culture-groups, both for province and country scope. This is for those that want a super-historically-correct mod where Swedes naturally have a +50% bonus to awesome_game_development.

Stay tuned, next week we’ll start showing off one of the first features in 1.20 update.

1.19.2 should be released tomorrow if nothing goes haywire.
Will the Golden Horde (still using vanilla instead of unit pack as patch notes say) and Prussian (not using BB's) Tier 2 sprites be fixed?

Could the tiny Gustavus be a clue? Will there be leader portraits?

Hopefully we don't have to wait until 1.20 to get some of the egregious bugs that crept in to 1.19 fixed. Austria having a hissy and dismantling the HRE when its ineligible heir loses an election really mucks things up...

So I'm a new player to EU4, only have 100 hours into it as I brought it last month, and with all the expansions going on for this game already, I think about 8 or 9 of them? this game is set to have at least 4 more major expansions?! Seems excessive to me, in a good way I think. game came out like, 3 years ago right? Still all this content coming and its not something I used to with other game devs.

Man this game... can't get enough of it and here already talking about the next major expansion, you said 4 in total? Sweet DLC's I hate you but I pay for you even full price! I hate my OCD condition with EU IV. :D

Got to admit though, I could see them doing that if they could.

I'm surprised no one has put the state amalgamation hints and modifiable culture values together to come up with POP hype though. Why would they add the ability to have modifiers on cultures if the next expansion isn't related to cultures? I.e. a total revamp some people have been asking for for years.

Because it's (in principle) a fairly simple change and will make a bunch of mod authors and users (i.e. paying customers) happy.

One thing I would like to see is Paradox to integrate some community mods into the game. I think there are a lot of excellent small mods that objectively improve the game experience.

Seems like they've recently taken some inspiration from M&T for map changes

X in this case being China and Y being Japan?

Nope. X and Y are the two cromosomes that define men, thus, next expansion is going to be about men, probably about reproduction habits of monarchs, which tend to generate inbreds and inept heirs which we all would love to see fall off a cliff but they have more lives than a cat. The mistery of inbred inmortal heirs is about to be uncovered¡

I hope so too. When I play with my brothers we have out of sync errors every 20 to 30 minutes :(
Out of syncs are rare for us, just make sure you all use the same language setting.
What we do get a lot of is random crashes to desktop or the game stops working.

And with hotjoin never working, it means we have to rehost every time... ... which means everybody has to restart the entire game, since you can't go back to menu.

I for one would have been a lot less miffed if that had been in the original post.
That said, I thank you, and I look forward to it.
Question...

I'm currently playing as Athens attempting to form Greece. Right now I am attempting to culture shift but, the "Accept Culture Shift" decision is not available. I meet all the requirements (+1 stability, not a vassal, am at peace) so is this a bug or something else
Probably better in quick questions/quick answers, but the answer is that accept cultural shift exists no more. Look in your government tab and you'll see your accepted cultures on the left and your unaccepted cultures on the right. It costs 100 dip to promote from unaccepted to accepted, and another 100 dip to promote from accepted to primary. You'll also need to have that particular culture be 50% or greater of your stated development (can be territorial cores, but must be in states), in order to make it primary. In all probability as Athens you meet those requirements; just outlining how it works now for the sake of completeness.

Cheers for the DD Johan :). Nothing wrong with 'quieter' DDs in the quieter moments from my angle, and some nice little teases there (X and Y :p). Have been hoping you'd do something with states, and it sounds like that's on the cards. Those extra culture-group modifiers for modding also sound great - potential for added depth to cultural interactions there as well if you wanted to go down that path in the vanilla game.

They have always done that. AoW/1.8, for instance, with it's major map changes instance had several modders working along devs. If you want specific mods then bring them up and your reasoning on why.
