CK2 Dev Diary #70: The Art of the East

Hi everyone!

Today I thought I’d talk a bit about the new art and music in Jade Dragon. If you’ve been following the development, you’ve probably noticed some of it already. Obviously, there are a lot of new icons, window frames and other interface bling. Most of this is the work of the inestimable Bjarne Hallberg, our main artist on Crusader Kings II.

As usual, there are also 15 new event pictures. This time, they were created by two external studios; “5518” and “Volta”. If you look carefully, you should be able to notice that the style is slightly different.

Then there are, of course, the fantastic new portraits by Deric “Crackdtoothgrin” North, and it’s not just one set, but two! Included in Jade Dragon are both his Tibetan and Chinese portraits, and I’ve got to say I think it’s some of his finest work.

Also included in the expansion is 10 minutes of Chinese themed music from Studio Audinity (composed by Yannick Süß and Robin Birner.) The music sounds great; check out our livestreams for a listen!

That’ll have to do it for today, stay safe!

I think that Chinese dynastic emblems and holding emblems should be square because Chinese Mandarin squares and Chinese imperial seals are square. Also circular emblems are for nomad and pagans. Some thing should be done for Indian emblem shape as well.

Oh good, we ARE getting new holding art. That's a relief. Still hoping for Chinese holding art as well.

I quite enjoy the new portraits, too. Every time we see a few more of them, they look better and better.

Good point about the seals being square!

The Holding pictures are great!

Personally I've always wanted holding pictures as a DLC instead of unit models. I don't spend much time looking at the people marching around the map, but I spend a lot of time looking at that province window in the bottom left.

Some of the Chinese COA are really really bad and the lack of Chinese holding art is kind of disturbing considering this is marketed as the "China DLC." No offense to the Tibetan content, it's great, but honestly I would have considered the Chinese stuff to be more crucial. The lotus COA looks way too similar to what we have with Buddhists already.

Well there's going to be a lot more Tibetan holdings on the map than Chinese ones (usually).

Which isn't to say that there shouldn't be a set of Chinese holding art but if one of them has priority it makes sense that it's the Tibetan.
