Stellaris Dev Diary #95: Humanoids Species Pack

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. As said last week, today's dev diary is not about the Cherryh update at all, but rather something much more imminent: The Humanoids Species Pack

Humanoids Species Pack
Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, there has been a lot of clamoring for more portraits and another ship-set like the one we added in Plantoids. Because of the amount of coder and content designer time we're putting into the major overhauls in the Cherryh update, we ended up with a lot of extra art time, and so we decided to oblige. Back in the Heinlein update, we added a bunch of free humanoid portraits that proved to be immensely popular - close to half of games started is with some variant of humanoid. Combine with there seeming to be a demand for a more 'classic western sci-fi' ship-set with sleeker lines and curves than the Mammalian one, and the design for the Humanoid Species Pack was born. Our artists have been quietly working away at it behind the scenes, and now it's almost ready.

So what's in the Humanoid Species Pack? Here is the feature list:
- 10 new Humanoid portraits
- A completely new ship set inspired by classic western sci-fi
- A new city set for Humanoids
- A new pre-scripted empire, the Fanatic Authoritarian/Materialist Voor Technocracy, with a portrait inspired by the 'loading screen aliens' from our own official art
- 3 new advisor voices offering alternative takes on existing ethics, based on the United Nations of Earth ('Dignified Xenophile'), Commonwealth of Man ('Disciplined Militarist') and Voor Technocracy ('Ruthless Materialist'). Samples from each of the new voices has been attached to the bottom of this post.
- 3 new music tracks that are remixes of classic Stellaris songs

Of course, the 5 Humanoid portraits that are already in the base game will remain free and available to everyone.

The Humanoids Species Pack will come out on December 7th, 2017 and will cost $7.99 US dollars or your regional equivalent. For those who want to buy it right now, pre-orders are available through the Paradox Shop. To pre-order, follow this link.

Next week we'll get back to talking about the Cherryh update on the topic of doomstacks (for real this time). Until then, I leave you with these awesome screenshots:

Cheers for the DD Wiz, and a very nice surprise :D. You should give your artists a big pat on the back, Humanoids looks great, and more portraits are always welcome (as well as having a greater choice for what we play ourselves, it also means less repetition in terms of the portraits we see in-game, helping our in-game foes to have more unique identities). Ship sets tops too, for same reason :).

Its awesome!

Still Chaotic Evil :p.

I've been thinking about whether we could do some sort of overlay for machines, so they can use any of the city-sets but they look a bit more like machine worlds. All depends on what we can feasibly do with the resources we have.

This would be a very cool idea :).

I think you are selectively forgetting rather a lot of the content that came out alongside those things you are talking about. Unless I missed the Narnia book where Aslan builds a Dyson Sphere. :p

C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Leviathan? :D

indeed, there are plenty of Earth lifeforms that have more than 2 eyes, and not just the bugs either(though they certainly make up the majority of critters that do), Starfish for example have one eye at the end of each of their legs.

and then there's this thing(and other Cambrian era animals):

Wouldn't look as odd if the trunk was retracted.

Very good. The Commonwealth advisor is exactly how I imagined the militarist should have been, but now we have both the savage and disciplined. New ship consmetics are also very welcome.

So now that 1.9 is a smaller-scale patch (like Kennedy and Adams?), who will you be naming it after?

Considering the subject matter, I propose Roddenberry, after the Godfather of the "rubber-headed alien" ;)

I think I've only ever played as a humanoid once, as a custom human race based on Mars. I've always liked aliens a lot. That said, this is cool. Humanoids need more pictures. Might actually give them a try once this hits. Orcs are calling my name.

Any chance we might get some expanded namelists to go with these?

Well, at the risk of repeating myself ...

I bet nobody was surprised when that thing went extinct.

I'll buy it, but I feel like $8 is a little pricey for this. I'd be happy if I paid 5, this seems a little gouge-y. I'm glad and grateful for the content, but this is a minor update at best and that means no real new content as far as game play goes, all cosmetic. When you compare it to synthetic dawn price wise (latest release at this time), this isn't going to hold up. This feels like a bethesda creation club move, too much money, not enough content. Not insanely expensive mind you, but also just enough to make the purchase of it feel uncomfortable so you have to think about whether it's going to be worth it.

Hooray for the Loading Screen Aliens! I'll nickname them... Loadliens! =)

Hurry up and TAKE MY MONEY!

Edit: I'm interested in the portraits and the ship designs. But what I'm really excited about is the 'Disciplined Militarist' voice, and the other two voices.
