HoI 4 Dev Diary - Formable Nations and Achievements

Hello, and welcome back to another dev diary! We are on the home stretch, with only two more issues to go before release! The team is working very hard to squash the last bugs and tweak the almost-possibly-partially-final values.

Today, we will talk about Achievements and Formable Nations.

Formable Nations have already been teased by some ill-advised clicking on stream. We won’t tell you just how you can get the infamous form_hre decision, but rest assured: it is quite a journey. And no, the trigger that was accidentally shown on stream is no longer quite so accurate...

The historical purists can also rest assured that they won’t see the decision pop up if they follow the historical path, and the AI is set to never go down this path.

The goal of the Formable Nations system is to give players a goal to work towards and enhance the sandbox gameplay. The formable nations have proven quite popular in other titles such as EUIV and the economics-simulator-that-shall-not-be-named. The implementation was fairly simple on the mechanics side: if you are one of the countries that can form a nation and control the required territories, you can activate a decision to form that nation. This gives you a cosmetic tag and cores on the relevant territories.

hoi4_3.jpg

We have a few fairly plausible formable nations like the Baltic Federation, Scandinavia, or the United Netherlands, which are pretty easy to do. We also have a number of somewhat less historically accurate formable nations like, say a reborn Roman Empire (which Mussolini may or may not have been aiming for), and finally the really far out ones like the Byzantine Empire.

hoi4_6.jpg

We envision these latter ones to be a late-game thing, after you have already achieved dominance over your region, when you want a little extra flavor for that world conquest. We’ve also attempted to ensure that all world regions have at least some possible formables.

hoi4_5.jpg

Again, the AI is set to never take these decisions in historical mode, and the territory requirements are such that only the more plausible and easy ones would likely ever be taken by the AI.

Currently, you need to control the territory directly, but future iterations might also allow you to form nations diplomatically.

Your reward is a new name and country color and a new flag. We had a lot of fun coming up with alternative history flags for a lot of these countries. For some, there are some additional goodies like custom namelists.

(This particular one is also available if you form Austria-Hungary through the Hungarian focus tree)

We’re not going to spoil the full list of countries that you can form - you can find them out yourself in just a few weeks.

I suppose in order to form Gran Colombia you need to conquer Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador as Colombia.
Now the billion dollar question is: do we have to take over the Panama canal which is controlled by the USA? That would be pretty schwiffty.
Attacking Panama without consequences is not realistic. That's why in my mod whenever Colombia justifies the war against Panamá, the guarantee from USA to COL is removed. I doubt paradox will make that event in the vanilla.

18 new achievements...

I have 1102 hours down and 2% of achievements unlocked (mods block achievements).
Currently no single achievement has been unlocked by more than 18.7% of the players. Only 10 out of 53 achievements have been unlocked by more than 5% of the players.
It seems like a wasted effort to include more of what almost nobody wants.

In the historical AI focuses, the US will go for the Monroe Doctrine, but if you turn historical focus off, they often don't, at least not super early anyway. My friends and I have played fascist Brazil and Argentina and it's very tough to wage wars of conquest against the US at the same time.

It is true, as the US indeed guarantees Panama.
There should be a way to go around this though.
I haven't tried your mod yet, but I already suscribed to it

You could make a focus in which Colombia pressures Panama to reintegrate, meanwhile, the US chance for intervening in favor of Panama depends of its current state.
If the US is in war against Germany, a 25% reduction of intervening in favor of Panama

If the US is in war against Japan, a 50% reduction of intervining in favor of Panama

And these values can stockpile.

Also, Colombia's military power should also be a matter here.

Mainly to not divert resources from the main war effort, but in order for this to better succeed Colombia would have to leave control of the "Panama Canal" state to the US, otherwise there would be an inmediate war.

Still no reports about Turkey? :( Well, playing as Turkey is very fun and risky (UK and France guarantees lol) and it has a potential to become a major superpower in mid-game but has no national focus. You guys should do something about it. It would be awesome I think. If mods can make Turkey better, then why would a DLC couldn't?;)

Sunrise Invasion: As Japan, conquer Mexico then Europe before 1945.
Oh wow, I remember suggesting that name for an achievement years ago in an old suggestion thread. (Not that it's a particularly hard title to come up with, and my version involved Mexico invading Japan…)

This is hilarious. :D I think EU IV needs one of these that's just "Start a game as Byzantium".

Maybe because the Turks didn’t do that much in WW2.

I can see where you are coming from, but I guess the real expensive part of implementing achievements is creating the art of the icons. Which is most likely not done by someone who writes code but, well, by someone who creates art for the game (like portraits and such).
I presume they use already defined interfaces ingame and an API to connect the achievement to Steam so that the actual coding for such an achievement is done in a few minutes.

Besides of that, I (and I know that I'm not alone with that) almost exclusively play for achievements. In games like HoI where there is no real goal these are my supplements for goals.

Can I have a clarification for this achievement? This does not specify what country should be played in order to get the achievement. Is it the big China only? the warlods? the PRC? any other country? I'm guessing it's all the Chinas could do it.

Second question: Jan Mayen when?:p

I hope we also get a decision to form the ROA. Would be lovely to have Vlassov as a German general.

Lets run some numbers.

Average playtime for HoI4 is 137 hours ( according to Steamspy ). And most achievement takes a complete playthrough to finish, Let's say 10-15 hours if you enjoy doing other things and playing it to the end and not just quit when achievement is done.

This means if everyone was playing exclusively for achievements then your average player with 137 hours played would have time for 137/12.5 = just 11 achievements.

If we had data for players who had played 1100 hours or more I think the percentage who have completed achievements would be a lot higher, if for no other reason then that half the players haven't even played 60 hours ( median playtime 59h according to Steamspy ).

I don't have much interest in achievement myself, but I know alot of other players do, and I think they are a quite interesting way to promote content and players getting to experience more content.
