EU4 - Development Diary - 21st of August 2018

Good day all and welcome to this week's EUIV Dev Diary. Dharma is a hair over 2 weeks away and we are as excited if not more so than you for its release. Today We'll be looking at the twenty Achievements that will be part of the update.

First though, I have a couple more render shots to add of units from the accompanying Content Pack. These are also being update in the archive for all our unit packs.

The fancy unit models shown here, as well as the elephants, advisor portraits and music shown in last week's dev diary are all part of the Dharma Content Pack which will be released alongside Dharma at a recommended price point of $7.99.

Now for those achievements! While the focus in Dharma and the 1.26 Mughals update is obviously India, we still make a mixed bag of achievements for across the world. Let's get down to it!

Bringing the total achievements list up to a staggering 285, there are achievements across the world and for a wide variety of play styles. We focus on keeping them interesting without bringing in more quazi World Conquests or "conquer Germany as x" achievements. In this batch, I'm excited about the Kale achievement, as well as having a great excuse to get my Imperialist boots on as Denmark.

We have just a couple of Dev Diaries remaining before Dharma releases. Next week we will have a grand summary of new mechanics in Dharma, the cliff notes of changes if you will, and following that expect Patchnotes as usual.

Dharma is available for preorder on both The Paradox Store and On Steam and releases on Thursday September 6th alongside the free 1.26 Mughals Update. See you next week!

  • Sweet Home Qaraqorum: As the Mughals assimilate Mongolian culture
does that mean converting to it , or removing it from the map?

When the Mughals own all provinces belonging to a culture, they can assimilate it and it counts as an accepted culture (without using up accepted culture slots).

You could vassalize the Teutons, hope that they turn protestant and form Prussia. Vassal feed them big and fat and then declare on them. Gamey, but less RNG perhaps.
Will never happen for the simplest reason that a subject nation cannot form Prussia.

@StarNaN which was your favourite achievement to test?

The Pheasant Strut - As Ghorka form Nepal and defeat Prussia with at least 100 000 prussian casualties in a war (both have to be primary targets of war)
So does Prussia form more frequently now, then? I imagine this will be quite the difficult achievement to get if not.

Why do you add achievements to nations that already had achievements and that did not get any new features in in the patch/DLC? Denmark and Austria are very strange choices here... So many tags in Europe without a single achievement and you choose two that already have some?

I love that they do this. It gives me a chance to revisit old countries and play them a new way

That's actually not true. Prussia is probably the only formable that can be formed by a subject. It was historically formed by the Teutons while being a Polish vassal. Nevertheless, that achievement is extremely stupid! Play a tiny nation and hope for the <10% chance of getting a prussia....

Trade company investments are a feature of the DLC and both achievements are Trade Company related. That said, woot ! I'm really looking forward to forming the Ostend Company. I once had to go over a pile of English-Austrian diplomacy archive pieces for a paper on the Ostend C°. Revenge on the English who basically killed this interesting venture in the Austrian Netherlands with their diplomatic pressure.

Prussia won't form more often in Dharma than usual. Then again, you can always take a few actions to nudge the formation in the right direction!

I was wondering this as well. Was there ever an austrian east india trading company Im not aware of?
Indeed there was, and it was based in the town of Ostend in the Austrian Netherlands :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostend_Company
EDIT: And just to be exact, this was only the first one, founded in 1722 and abandoned (due to pressure from the evil British) in 1732. There was a second attempt based in Trieste and Antwerp in the 1770s, and another smallish venture operating in Ostened in the 1780s.

Mughals have a unique feature where they can assimilate a culture into administration. You probably have to use that on the Mongolian culture.

Achievements. An excuse to deploy in-jokes and creative, game-related punnery.

PDS Recruiter: "So prospective intern, never-mind coding. How good are you at puns?"

The Pheasant Strut seems weird. First it starts with playing as Ghorka and not any other Mini-Nepal. A player isn't given a choice. Then you need to declare war on Prussia and even make them suffer a certain amount of casualties. I don't think it will be any fun to do it, considering it's "Form Nepal as Ghorka, conquer land to Prussia, most likely form it for them (basically force them to form it) conquering what is needed and eventually fight a war with them and make sure they suffer at least 100 000 casualties probably sending them money and going out of their country to give them time to recruit again". I much rather have an achievement, that gives me a goal and not forces me to do something entirely unreasonable.

It kinda seems like the isolationist achievement for Shinto; something that just isn't fun to do. Achievements shouldn't be something you play to cross-out, but to give a challenge or a goal.

I said nothing about the trade company part... Just the fact that you have to be Denmark/Austria

Pretty hard considering how far away you are. If the reformation fails in that area, there is nothing you can do about that.

Maybe you could simply include Brandenburg (and Teutonic order) in the possible enemies. That would make it more likely there is actually a chance of reaching it...
