CK2 - Dev Diary #123 - Iron Century

Hello!

As you probably know by now we released our 3.1.1 patch yesterday. Hopefully those of you who have managed to try it are enjoying it, and those of you who haven’t will jump in this weekend. Let us know what you think about the court and tech changes, and as always if you run into any issues, please report them in the bug forum!

Now onto something new, there have been a few hints here and there about what we have been working on. However now we can officially announce that we will be releasing a new historical bookmark called: The Iron Century. The bookmark will start on the 7th of August 936, a previously unplayable date and our first in the 10th century.

In Europe Otto marches on the path to an Empire, Rival Caliphs battle for control of the Muslim world and the last remnants of the vikings stir to the north. Hundreds of other characters have their own stories to tell. A thousand possibilities await in the Iron Century.

Next week we will do something special and have a new dev diary about the 936 bookmark every day from Monday to Friday to cover the setting of the medieval world in the 10th century. Also I want to make it clear that ‘The Iron Century’ update will be completely free.

A correction from last weeks dev diary is that the correct weekday of our Crusader Kings stream is Wednesdays 16:00 CEST and not the previously mentioned Thursdays.

Thanks for reading everyone!

New features just released and you announce another bookmark ? OH YEAH !

AND you give us a wonderful wallpaper ? <3
I need a new monitor, the 3 I already possess can not handle more wallpapers after Holy Fury, MtG, and Imperator !! :D

I hope you will take this as an opportunity to look at the Magyars. The last times I played a historical game on the Viking Age bookmark (nowadays I'm only playing AGOT), there wasn't a single instance where the Magyars didn't end up bordering the Rhine after completely crushing East Francia with their event troops.

-Devs: "Here's a new bookmark, and it's completely free! Here's also an awesome picture of a King in armor, carrying a sword, leading his men into battle."
-Player: "I dunno...."
-Devs: "Here's the same picture....but with the King flailing his arm like a propeller!"
-Player: "gimme! gimme! gimme!"

I’m not ashamed that this works on me ;)

Cool :) What's with all the free stuff? Not that I'm complaining, but it is a bit odd.
Perhaps Pdox worked out that releasing free updates generates enough hype for the game that it causes more people to hear about it, and potentially buy the backlog of existing DLCs on the next steam sale.

Ok, I'm completely disappointed in this patch.

I was wrong about the startdate, I was off by a full month.

I will hang my head in shame.

NIIIIIICE and thank you! Rise of the Buyid Dynasty! Iranian intermezzo! Please have Panna Khosrow, the Buyid prince (who later claimed to be related to the Sassanian King Bahram Gur) be a child of destiny (he did claim the kingdom of Iraq and Al Jazira as a young prince).

This will be particularly fascinating for Iran, at the height of the Iranian Intermezzo, because the brief rule of the Zoroastrian Ziyarids will still cover much of the country; probably the most viable Zoroastrian start for anyone. It also is just after the start of the Buyid dynasty, the Daylamite Shi'is who attempted to claimthe title of Shahanshah and who were the last major dynasty before the Seljuk invasion in Western Iran. In Khorasan, meanwhile, the Samanids are at their height, the dynasty which did so much to restore the prestige and use of the Persian language after two centuries of Arabic's literary dominance.

I'm looking forward to this one a lot :D.

EDIT: Ah, it appears that a Sunni Muslim had ascended the Ziyarid throne in 935, so sorry Zoroastrian fans, it's one year out :p but there will hopefully be plenty of Zoroastrian sub-rulers in the Ziyarid realm.

I’m really hoping that Panna Khosrow the Buyid prince at the time will be a child of destiny...particularly since I’ve yet to have one myself!

Just gonna drop this in here. The holy roman empire is extremely stable right now.

All empires and large realms are too stable.

Decline and Fall mechanics need to be reworked to allow dissolution of empires much easier.

About Zoroastrian Persia, yeah that was make it or break it for me.But I'll still play on this start date occasionally I guess. 867 is a sweet spot for me.
There will likely be Zoroastian dynasty members of the ruling dynasty.
Well...

I am not sure which one could be considered as the "Chinese Emperor". I prefer that the off-map power should be unavailable since East Asia was just a region with several independent countries in 936, just like Europe.
I think they usually go with the one who hold Beijing.
Kinda looks like Robert Baratheon.
Yeah which is weird since I've never seen him depicted as a large man before.
What are Muslim kings also called post 1066?
Well I would guess most "Sultanates" were actually Emirates (because they in some ceremonial capacity bowed to the caliphs even when essentially independent) but the literal arabic word for King is Malik. But that's pre 1066 post 1066 sultans are called sultans.

The mad lads actually did it!! This has really been a great year (well a bit more than a year) for CK2. First the free give away of the base game, then Holy Furry, then a free update with wonders, and now a new bookmark.

Yes! This is how I like my bookmarks, tbh - I know there's been talk about how unused the alternate bookmarks are and dropping to just one, and how having a lot is a so much work for so little reward, but I hope this is the path going forward for all PDX games. A few specially selected bookmarks rather than just one or infinite.

Also, important question: will this mean the Great Schism gets further looked at? Right now in all dates, Orthodox and Catholicism are separate when they should be combined earlier on, but given how close we'll be starting to the actual Schism, this new date is maybe at a perfect time to look at that issue?

Sadly, we will not add anything for the Schism with the bookmark.

Making empires more unstable would be really easy to accomplish by simply adding a few events restricted to Emperor tier characters that screw them over. For example, adding an event that adds the ambitious trait to a few AI vassals would royally screw over empires. Or events that simply increase AI ambition temporarily would, perhaps, be better. It really wouldn't take much.
