CK2 - Dev Diary #123 - Iron Century

Hello!

As you probably know by now we released our 3.1.1 patch yesterday. Hopefully those of you who have managed to try it are enjoying it, and those of you who haven’t will jump in this weekend. Let us know what you think about the court and tech changes, and as always if you run into any issues, please report them in the bug forum!

Now onto something new, there have been a few hints here and there about what we have been working on. However now we can officially announce that we will be releasing a new historical bookmark called: The Iron Century. The bookmark will start on the 7th of August 936, a previously unplayable date and our first in the 10th century.

In Europe Otto marches on the path to an Empire, Rival Caliphs battle for control of the Muslim world and the last remnants of the vikings stir to the north. Hundreds of other characters have their own stories to tell. A thousand possibilities await in the Iron Century.

Next week we will do something special and have a new dev diary about the 936 bookmark every day from Monday to Friday to cover the setting of the medieval world in the 10th century. Also I want to make it clear that ‘The Iron Century’ update will be completely free.

A correction from last weeks dev diary is that the correct weekday of our Crusader Kings stream is Wednesdays 16:00 CEST and not the previously mentioned Thursdays.

Thanks for reading everyone!

I'm hoping we'll finally get an Anti-Caliph mechanic.

I'm glad that the decision to no longer have multiple bookmarks doesn't extend to CKII. It's the one Paradox game where I actually use them.

Me too! Since the focus in more on characters than national growth multiple bookmarks are an excellent thing to add.

How are you with the Hungarians? You know Hungarian conquest or Hungarian invasions of Europe or Hungarian Grand Principality or State Foundation and King Saint Stephen?
Since there was a large influence on the history of them.

Now that new bookmarks are on the table. We really need a 1030 bookmark. It seems like just 30 years away from 1066, but a lot of things were different.
Highlights of a 1030 bookmark:

- Caliphate Al-Andalus
- Totius Hispaniae
- Capet France
- Normans
- North Sea Empire
- Brian Boru legacy Ireland
- Holy Roman Empire
- Semi-Pagan Scandinavia
- Semi-Pagan Poland, Hungary and Rus (Rus converted in 988)
- Early Almoravids
- Big Fatimid empire
- Big Abbasid remnant
- Semi-pagan Seljuks

Having Caliphate Spain, Holy Roman Empire and semi-pagan North Sea Empire all in one bookmark would be a total gamechanger.

Have the bookmark focus its date on the battle of Stiklestad (29 July) as this bookmarks historical dilemma, aka 1066s war for England.

For those complaining about blob stability, that's easy enough to address without new mechanics (not that I oppose those):

  • Allow tributaries to join factions
  • Allow all vassals a long way away from the capital or whom border other realms the ability to join independence factions
  • Vassals that really hate they liege should ignore his attempts to blackmail them out of factions (particularly proud/brave ones)
    • Conversely, at least some vassals that love their liege should refuse to join factions, even when blackmailed
  • Increase the likelihood of vassals joining independence factions and breaking off after decadence revolts
  • Increase the likelihood that unhappy vassals will join independence factions (vassals with little chance to get on the council should almost never join "increase council power" factions)
  • When an independence revolt succeeds, give all tributaries, and vassals of different religion and culture to the liege or a long way from the capital the choice to break free
  • Give revolting lords the ability to sent a call to arms to foreign rulers
  • Allow lords to join ongoing revolts, particularly if the revolt is going well
  • Remove the +20 opinion modifier for rulers in elective monarchies for vassals that voted for someone else
  • Have peasant/religious/liberation revolts become more likely if others have been active for a time, actually giving them a decent shot at succeeding against a powerful ruler (would require significant fine tuning, but could have great benefit) (possible substitute for carrion for the vultures)
  • Instead of one religious revolt per religion per realm, make it one per duchy per realm
  • Make the AI often break NAPs with people it either really hates or really wants to declare war on (but doesn’t love), like ambitious pretenders to a throne.
Culture related:
  • Increase the likelihood rulers adopt the native culture, and allow vassals to change their culture even if they have the same one as their liege
  • Slow down the rate of province culture conversion (even more important with Reaper’s Due province depopulation), particularly in hills and and even more so in mountains
  • Have many courtiers spawn with the province culture, rather than all with the ruler’s culture
  • Break up some of the larger, more assimilation prone cultures (particularly Levantine) and culture groups (particularly Arabic)
Muslim specific:
  • As Muslims have plenty of opinion bonus traits, change Hajjaj from +5 to lacking it be -5
  • Give kings and emperors a small chance to become decedent
  • Make it so decadence causes an opinion penalty to non-decadent, non-cynical Muslim vassals, especially zealous ones
Conclave exclusive:
  • Zealous vassals should be upset significantly if heathens or heretics are on the council, disincentivising players from keeping their most trouble inclined vassals close
  • Make powerful vassals that dislike their liege sometime choose to join factions instead of the council, or resign from the council to make factions

Will you guys fix it where the AI will actually form the HRE right away when it meets the conditions. I have a mod that repaints the map where the Emperor of Germania starts the game with well over the starting territory and titles needed and gets the prestige and money needed in a few short years, but never forms the HRE. I've probably done about a hundred test runs to see how different parts of the map plays out when I finish them and only once when I wasn't even watching the game did the Emperor of Germania actually form the HRE and it wasn't the start date Emperor, but his Heir. I shouldn't have gone back to my computer and be shocked that the HRE actually formed.

I've seen AI kings being able to create the empire and not doing it. Not just the HRE. And I don't know why.

So we have united, prebaptised Poland at early years of Mieszko I's rule? Quite good to know. Though I expect both Bohemia and the HRE (the former is already baptized back then) to be nasty at start.
Will games starting in this bookmark qualify for achievements?
EDIT:
apparently, it's Lestko's rule, Mieszko's grandfather.
