Renovations of the Landtag begin - January 15
Renovations of the Landtag building in Königsberg have begun. In the meantime, Parliament has temporarily relocated to Posen in an effort to make itself more popular in the region struck by widespread unemployment. At the same time, it gave the Walenstadt Cabinet back in Königsberg some room to breathe and solve the issues at hand. With the second millennium almost over, Prussia’s future was more uncertain than ever. The issue of the terrorist organization known as the Patriots of the Teutonic Order was still lingering, even though their activity had died down since the elections of 1997. State security intel had information that a new attack was imminent. Possible targets ranged from Jewish synagogues to syndicalist party bureaus. At the same time, pressure from the far left on the government only continued to grow. Unemployment in Posen soared and the government could only provide so much new jobs by upgrading its road network. On top of all the unrest in Prussia itself, Walenstadt also increasingly had to deal with pressure from Berlin and Brussels where diplomats and politicians wanted a final decision from the Prussian government on EU-membership. One sparkle of hope however was that pressure within the Erneuerungspartei was moving the party away from its pro-Russia stance and opened up the possibility of talks between Prussia and the EU. But as long as Trump was their leader, that possibility remained a unachievable dream.

Brussels Ultimatum – March 21
After a European Summit held in Brussels in early March, pressure on the Prussian government on their stance towards EU-membership only increased. On March 21, the European Commission issued an ultimatum asking Walenstadt for a clear answer by the end of the year. The “Brussels Ultimatum” as it was called in right-wing media quickly angered the Junkerpartei and senior members of the Erneuerungspartei, calling it an outright provocation of the EU who increasingly showed their agenda of assimilating Prussia into their sphere of influence. At the same time however, left wing media and younger members of the SPD, CD.P and EP called for Walenstadt to act on the EU’s request, this was their chance to join the club of rich EU countries. However, Walenstadt was in no position to act with Trump breathing down his neck. In an effort to convince him to change his opinion on the EU, Walenstadt only soured his relations with the EP-leader. It became more and more clear that Trump was an unwilling member of the government coalition.
Terrorist attack on SAP HQ – May 1
On Labour Day, a symbolic day for socialists and syndicalists alike, Königsberg was struck by a terrorist attack. Two individuals snuck in the Syndicalist Action for Prussia’s HQ and started shooting innocent bystanders. Police arrived quickly on the scene and managed to kill one terrorist. The other attacker managed to flee and a manhunt has started for the killer. No prominent members of the party were killed as they all were marching in the Labour Parade. Albrecht Schwartzmann, leader of the Syndicalists, has called on Walenstadt to share information on the investigation with the public, hoping that tips will help catch the criminals who were behind the attack. Walenstadt tasked the Staatssicherheit with finding possible connections to the Patriots of the Teutonic Order.

Scandal causes government to collapse – June 15
Several weeks into the investigation of the Staatssicherheit into the terrorist attack in Königsberg, troubling information had arrived on Walenstadt’s desk. The terrorists were in fact members of the Patriots, but that was to be expected. What was troubling were the files discovered in their base of operations. Several boxes marking the official seal of the Prussian State had been found underneath the floor in the hide-out where the escaped terrorist had stayed hidden for several weeks. In one of the boxes was a file on the Trump family, containing the details of their migration to Prussia. Unknown to the public, Trump’s father Fred had been involved with a group called the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle was often connected to the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s and the trials in the US that followed. The documents looked as if they originated from the Department of Immigration and after being analysed, were determined to be genuine. If this were to be leaked to the press, it could seriously harm Trump’s reputation. At first, Walenstadt was hesitant, but in the end the choice was made for him as one of his assistants slipped in his office after hours and made copies to sell to the press. What followed was an explosion of public anger. Trump’s business plummeted on the stock market and he was forced to step down as CEO. In the Landtag, Schwartzmann of the SAP called for a motion of no confidence and succeeded in bringing down the 3nd Walenstadt Cabinet. Schwartzmann subsequently addressed the Landtag to call for elections:
“This cabinet has lost the confidence of this assembly and the people they represent. It is time for the Prussian people to shed themselves from this corrupt government. As I have said many times earlier, the Erneuerungspartei and many of its members are just the same as their Volkspartei counterparts, corrupt national populists who wish nothing more but a return to the authoritarian regime under the control of Moscow. There are others who say that the future is European, but I must warn my compatriots to not fall in the trap that will only replace Moscow with Brussels and Berlin. False prophets often make statements about the future, even though much is still uncertain. But one thing is certain, this country needs elections if it wants to have a stable government. Elections are the only way this corrupt cancer will be gone from our political system. Only then can we approach Europe as equals and not as some backwater colony waiting to be invaded.”
After his speech, Schwartzmann proposed a resolution to hold elections in December. Not surprisingly, it was accepted by a majority consisting of the SAP, JP, GfP, CD.P, SDP and dissident members of the EP.

Leadership elections in the Erneuerungspartei – July 6
After the revelations surrounding Trump’s family history, he unwillingly had to step down as leader of the EP. Leadership elections in the party quickly followed to allow the party to campaign in the upcoming elections. Eventually, the elections turned into a two-man race with former Minister of Economy Hermann Flach Jr. facing off against the much younger Sven Strassmann, the 36-year old of Köslin. While Flach was somewhat typical for the old guard, who was too hesitant to move Prussia firmly into the Western block, Strassmann was an avid supporter of EU- and NATO-membership for Prussia. Strassmann was followed by many younger members of the Erneuerungspartei, who increasingly outnumbered the older members. Not surprisingly, it was Strassmann who turned out victorious in the end with 56% of the votes. As a result the Erneuerungspartei shifted away from pro-Russia leaning to pro-West leaning foreign policy.
CD.P National Convention – July 15th
Not long after the leadership elections in the EP, a national convention of Christian Democrats took place in Posen. Josef Tusk addressed his party members on the change of course that the party would take in light of the recent events and the future of the country.
[Josef Tusk (CD.P)]:
“It has become clear to me and many others of my party that the only way to ensure a free and democratic Prussia is the eventual reunification with Germany. Prussia was once the engine of German unification. Now, more than a century and two Weltkriegs later, the powers of division and hatred are once again in our midst. People like Donald Trump are the proof that still today, something is rotten in the State of Prussia. The ghost of the Volkspartei still haunts the Prussian people to this day. The demonstration against Trump in Berlin earlier this year shows us that the ghosts which haunt us, are also a concern for the German people. I have spoken with Angela Merkel, the German Leader of the Opposition, and she has assured me that her party will work towards reunification with Prussia under equal terms. It is time the Prussian people return home to their beloved Germany and get rid of the history of violence and persecution that has tarnished the Prussian State. The CD.P and the CDU will work together to build the bridge between our two countries so that the nation can become one again.”

SDP National Convention – August 23rd
After the CD.P’s national convention, the Social Democrats scrambled to convene as well and send out a clear message to its followers. The idea of German unification was perhaps tempting to a lot of members, as German Chancellor Lafontaine (SPD) was a popular figure in Prussia, but Walenstadt still had other priorities.
[Chancellor Ludwig Walenstadt (SDP)]:
“Friends of democracy. The events that shook the core of our democracy still linger, to the point that the viability of our system is being questioned. Some advocate German reunification, a very tempting idea indeed. But one does not combine two countries overnight. The institutional complexity of Germany and that of Prussia would make reunification a process of years, if not decades. To turn it into an election-promise is to endanger its eventuality. That is why we must first seek to enter the European Union as an independent country. Prussia must first become an equal to Germany in the European family before it can reunite with it. Our previous accomplishments in government have prepared Prussia for EU-membership. Our budget is healthy, our industry is competitive and our road network is being modernized. Membership of the EU will not only benefit our country’s economy, but also its workers. Together with other social democrat leaders like Lafontaine, Prussia can help transform the EU into a more social union. Healthcare, pensions, education and wages are some of the many social securities which will benefit from European expertise and policy. There are some who claim a syndicalist alternative for the EU is better, but let me warn you that such a thing will inevitably lead to competition and the eventual downfall of our economic system. It is time to say yes to Europe, it is time to join our European family. Only then can we talk about reunification with Germany.”

Junkerpartei National Convention – September 9th
Just like the other big parties before them, the Junkerpartei also convened to make a mark on public opinion. Hot topics like reunification with Germany and/or EU-membership influenced much of the smaller debates on the convention, but Johann Korwin-Mikke made sure that all eyes were diverted to him on the closing speech of the day.
[Johann Korwin-Mikke (JP)]:
“People of Prussia, how long are you going to tolerate politicians talking about how rotten the system is, while it is they themselves who are the bastards that allowed this to happen? The events of this year have proven that even the most corrupt, most evil of people can get into government. This government has thrown the interests of the people into the bin and have worked only for themselves. Why would they want EU-membership? Only to bolster their own ego and bank accounts once they get a position in Brussels. Why would they want unification with Germany? Only to weaken the Prussian people by inflating their popularity with German votes. The people of Prussia know what they want, they don’t need the Germans to tell them. If the Junkerpartei gets a majority in the Landtag, we will make sure that Prussia will return to its former glory. The injustice endured by the Hohenzollerns will be over and they will be allowed to return to their rightful positions. Only an impartial monarch will ensure a faithful government working for its people rather than for itself. Georg Friedrich von Hohenzollern will ensure that people like Donald Trump never get their hands on the Chancellorship. Protect Prussia, vote Junker!”

Obviously we are heading to new elections, the post will come on later today. I just want to mention that after the elections, I will change my style (again I know) and instead of posts per year, I will move on to summaries of certain areas for longer durations, like f.e. "Economic policy under government X, 2000-2005". It will help things speed up and make the posts more interesting and easier to read I think.
