Stellaris Dev Diary #214: Announcing “The Custodians” initiative and the free Lem Update

Greetings!

Today I am here to announce some very good news! Stellaris is not slowing down, but rather picking up the pace! We at PDS Green are very happy to announce our new “Custodians” initiative as well as the next free update, coming sometime after summer.

The Custodian Team
Stellaris as a game has been very exploratory, and the game has seen a lot of big changes over the years. I want to start by giving some insight into why we’ve chosen to focus on this initiative.

As we’ve released more expansions we’ve had to take longer and longer between each release, as we’ve needed to spend more time on focusing on quality, making sure each release is as stable as possible. Paradox Development Studio also looks very different today vs. how it looked just a few years ago. Things take longer, there are more processes in place, and there are a lot more people involved. Because each release is now further apart, it makes it harder for us to address some of the outstanding issues that might be affecting the community between DLC releases.

As we’ve added more content it's also been harder to polish and maintain all of the amazing existing content that we’ve added over the years. We want to keep creating new cool experiences for Stellaris, but we also want to be able to maintain a high quality for the base game itself, and for older content.

What we have done now is that we’ve staffed up, and split the Stellaris team into two teams that focus on different aspects of the game. One team, that we call “the Custodians” team, will focus on free updates that we aim to release every 3 months, while the “expansion team” will focus on creating new content for the game.

Examples of what “The Custodians” could be working on:
  • Tweaking game balance
  • Adding new content to old DLC
  • Polishing existing content
  • Bug fixes
  • Performance improvements
  • AI improvements
  • Multiplayer stability
  • UI and quality-of-life improvements

This does not mean that the game will suddenly “be fixed” or done (whatever that means). Together with you, the community, we now have a better opportunity than ever to keep improving the game. In fact, I think working with the community is going to be crucial to really make this work well. We are going to need to improve how we communicate with each other, so that we can better understand each other.

What “The Custodians” initiative is not
It is very important that you understand that “The Custodians” initiative is no magic bullet or quick fix. We’re in this for the long run, and we hope you are too.

We will need to manage our expectations and small, incremental improvements with more regular updates should be our approach.

Honoring Stanislaw Lem
The first free Update, the Lem Update, will be named in honor of the Polish sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem, whose 100th anniversary is being celebrated this year. Stanislaw Lem is famous for works such as Solaris, which has already inspired the Stellaris you know today. The Lem Update is currently scheduled for release sometime after summer.

To set expectations more clearly, the Lem Update will be a bit more ambitious and larger in scope compared to what you can come to expect from “Custodian” updates in the future. The reason is that we’ve had a longer time to work on it than what is planned for future updates. It’s also important to note that as of now, the Lem update is scheduled to be a standalone free update, and will not be associated with a paid DLC.

The Lem Update planned features:
  • Buffing the Backlog: We’re reviewing some old DLC to revitalize them with some new content. Humanoids Species Pack and Plantoids Species Packs will now feature some new gameplay features. By the way, did anyone say Necrophage Hive Minds?
  • Selectable Traditions Trees: You will no longer be locked to the same 7 tradition trees, but you will instead have 7 slots that can be filled with a tradition tree of your choice. The number of tradition trees will be expanded, and previous tradition-tree swaps will be broken out into their own trees (Adaptability will no longer be a swap of Diplomacy for example). Some new tradition trees will also be added to existing DLCs.
  • Balance Pass: We will be doing a balance pass on some existing gameplay systems and features.
  • And more..!: Quality of life improvements, bug fixes, AI improvements...

We will go into more detail about these features in future dev diaries, but for now I will leave it at that. We’ll be back next week to talk a bit about some thoughts regarding game balance.

And from Wiki:
Stanisław Herman[2] Lem (Polish: [staˈɲiswaf ˈlɛm] (About this soundlisten); 12/13 September 1921 – 27 March 2006) was a Polish writer of science fiction and essays on various subjects, including philosophy, futurology, and literary criticism.
"Sometime after summer" and this guy's birthday on 12th / 13th September.

I think that's pretty much the upcoming schedule then. We will have a summer free of other changes.

Would be nice to have a least a 3.0.4 for what little bridging fixes in between these 3 months.

Finally! This step was much needed since 2.2 and Megacorps.

What are the chances that the Custodian team will inspect the various big community fixes/mods that address some of the major issues in the game?

For example:
Ariphaos Unofficial Patch (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1995601384) for bug fixes.
Aggressive Crisis Engine (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2268189539) for Crisis fixes and improvements.
StarTech AI (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2494712590) for major AI improvements in tech advancement, economy management/recovery and alloy production.
Improved Planet and Sector Automation (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1764704051)

I think your team @grekulf @Eladrin could gain a lot of insights/inspiration from these mods, that would make the game better in the long term.

The custodian team is just what this game needs - bug fixes and improvements need a lot of attention right now, but I feel with a team dedicated to it you'll be able to get things under control. And adding new content to old DLCs is a really nice idea, I think that's a great way to move forward.

I have but one request for the custodians:

Please let us use coordinates to choose where our custom empires spawn in the galaxy. In my 5 years of Stellaris I've spent more time generating new galaxies until I get Sol's position right than I care to admit.

In fact I may be doing that as I type this

First of all: I'm super hyped for the custodians and I'm glad that you finally want to tackle some stuff that has been bad for years now. I like the changes you announced!

buuuuut

are you also the right department to discuss balance with? Because if so:

1. You really have to look into Hives and Lithoids regarding their miner output. Miners only produce 4 Minerals while Hive Researchers need 6 upkeep. Aka You need 1.5 pops to upkeep 1 Researcher while Machine Empires can pay 2 Researchers with 1 Tech-Drone. It's similar for Lithoids who have a very expensive pop upkeep of 1 Mineral per pop which equals to 1 miner job every 4 pops compared 1 job every 6 pop for machines for example.

2. Trade Hubs are super weak compared to solar panels. Solar panels get to 19.8 EC per panel in the mid game which means 120 EC per station. Maybe you should buff Trade Hubs a bit. Trade in general would benefit from some further buffs, like a 20% trade value tech that has 3 stages(same as for energy, minerals and food).

3. Megacorp Jobs are well.. Executives basically produce the same stuff as a Merchant with Merchant Guilds well the same stuff except that they only produce 6 Trade while Merchants produce 12. Both are Ruler Jobs. Employing Managers feels bad after the clerk buff. They have 2 CG upkeep, for a bit of unity, society and 3 trade. It's always smarter to save the building slot, get a trade league and produce unity via trade through clerks and merchants as megacorps which makes managers essentially a dead job.

4. Spiritualist are well.. a meme? Shroud gives to little benefits compared to Sytnh or Bio Ascension and on top of that those benefits are rng based and come with heavy drawbacks(speaking of the covenant deals), unity(the resource spiritualist specialize in) is useless past the midgame. I don't know how your tradition changes gonna effect that but I doubt that they are a long term fix for unity. Repeatable Unity Edicts/Ambitions would be great and also be a alternative to spamming research all game.

5. Robot Empires, Void Dweller and Necrophages oppress the current Stellaris "competitive" meta and could all need some balance changes to take a way a bit of their power.

Robot Empires for example really don't need 8 EC per job base output, also why do they get +2/4 resource districts for building an energy grid/mining hub while Lithoid Hives(who are basically robot empires that use minerals instead of energy) are doomed when they roll bad guranteed worlds because they can't employ enough miners.

Void Dweller could need a reduction on their production buff or should be made mutally exclusive with the meritocracy civic. +25% specialist resource output is just insane.

Similar problem with Necrophages. Should be exclusive with meritocracy. Maybe reduce amount of primitive pops and make them also exclusive with Lithoids.

Sounds very promising, especially closing minor gaps in existing DLCs. I hope envoys as a fifth leader type make it.

Improving the older DLCs sounds awesome! I hope that/wonder if going back and adding to the species packs could also include additional portraits. Since were unlikely to get a “Plantoids 2”, for example, it would be pretty awesome if we got anywhere from 1-5 new portraits retroactively added to the pack while the Custodian team is working on it!

This is good news. I'm usually sceptical about most of the dlc's precisely because they offer features that are very limited in interaction with the other dlc's. I hope that the pace of the game can at some point become somewhat the same as it was the earliest versions. Ever since Megacorp the exploration phase is over after just a couple of decades. The changes for traditions sound interesting too. I never found them all that interesting because you can easily get all of them during a game. I think they could be a lot more interesting if there were some mutual exclusive picks or more interesting interactions between traditions and civics/factions/leaders or ruler. I'm looking forward to the first update.

Woah! This is all amazing and incredibly good news. You guys rock.

EDIT: I literally have a custom empire called The Artificers that are a Machine Empire. Can I pick the Masterful Crafters civic for them? I'm guessing not, since ME don't have Consumer Goods.
Remember that Rogue Servitors do ;)

Sounds like an excellent idea; Stellaris has sorely needed a team focused on fixing and improving existing content, and splitting off the Custodians team to do so independent of the pressures of developing new content should help immensely moving forward. This makes me more hopeful for the future of Stellaris than anything else I've heard in the past few years.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! :D

I've loved every 1159 hours of Stellaris that I've played and have bought all expansions the game has to offer but it has become a little stale for me as of late.

This seems like a great choice for the Devs to make. Excited for the future :)

Can every long-running PDS game get its own Custodian team? Adding new stuff to older DLCs (especially in ways that use new systems to enhance old ones) is just what I’ve really always wanted. Can’t wait!

I think it's pretty clear that CK3 is following this model to some extent even if they haven't explicitly said so.
