Dev Diary #108: Dev Diary Scheduling & Community Activities

Greetings!

It’s been (almost) two weeks since the release of Friends & Foes, and the sheer amount of reactions and feedback to it and the accompanying Bastion Update has been fantastic to see! From the many emergent stories that have been posted around the Internet (one about a peasant crush ascending to the position of councilor and subsequently being murdered by a noble out of spite comes to mind) to the impressive screenshots of vast Mongol Empires and powerful AI realms - it’s great to see how many of you returned to the game and think that it got a breath of new life. In fact, despite the smaller size of this update, more of you came back to the game and ran a longer campaign than ever before!

Of course, if you’re experiencing any issues, pop over to the Bug Forums and report them: Link
As of the newly released 1.7.1, we’ve concluded the planned updates for this release, though if something significant appears, we’ll look into fixing it before the next update.

As for the future, we’re hard at work on upcoming content, and we’ve been for quite some time. Previously we’ve explained that we run our projects in parallel - what we’re working on in the Stockholm studio has been in the works since before Friends & Foes (but it’s bound to take some time yet, do not expect anything too soon). Our sister studio in Thalassic is also hard at work heading up the work on upcoming content and updates, this too in parallel with work in Stockholm. While we can say that Friends & Foes was the last paid content of the year, we’re hoping to have another smaller free update out before the year is over (no ETA for now). Additional clues about what we’re working on might appear over the next few months…

A change we want to make going forward is to be more transparent with our Dev Diary schedule. We don’t want to post so-called ‘filler’ Dev Diaries, and with the cycles being longer between updates we instead want to use this time for other kinds of activities with the community. For the sake of full transparency, for smaller updates (such as free patches or event packs) we’ll have at most two Dev Diaries. For larger updates (such as Flavor Packs) we’ll have around four, while Expansions will have roughly 2-4 months' worth of Dev Diaries.

So what will we do instead? A variety of things - we might have Discord AMA’s, hangout streams with Devs, or sometimes we might post a Dev Diary about something not related to an update - for example, about how we work or plans we have for the future.

If you want to partake in some of this, here’s where you can find us:

Discord: Chat with your fellow Community members, staff members, Modders, and other Content Creators. Also a perfect place if you want tips or a game to join!

Twitch: We stream weekly and go through all the latest and greatest content that we have. This is also a great place to chat with others and ask questions of our team.

YouTube: If you haven’t happened to catch our Streams or just want to see a collection of all our videos, this is your one stop shop for all Crusader Kings III official videos.

Twitter: Our latest and greatest spot for news and interaction with our Community. We are always online, as they always say. Feel free to follow us and see what we have going on from day to day.

Facebook: Just a nice relaxed place to hang out and socialize with our Community and see what everyone is up to.

Reddit: If Facebook isn’t your speed, we also have a great resource in Reddit for conversations and more detailed threads regarding the game and any questions you might possibly have.

Steam Workshop: While we do not control the content of Steam Workshop, it does contain a great number of highly interesting and resourceful Mods from our Community and has a ton of troubleshooting and technical information.

Sad that this is the last paid update of the year but glad there is some communications about things moving forward.

My only concern is that more than CK2 this map is so large that game will have finished dev cycle before half the map has any unique flavour

I can understand why reactions are hidden for this DD.

"We won't be updating you on the progress of future content like we used to, but instead you can read our corporate Facebook page! Or lose your will to live by joining an annoying Discord, an ersatz community that exists in place of the one we're killing with our utter lack of organic fan engagement! Watch people who don't know any more than you do (and often less) post ten times a minute arguing over the hot gameplay reveals in a three-month-old sponsored influencer stream!"

No more paid content this year.. and Friends & Foes was a passion project?
So.. there is no more until 2023 except a small patch?
The passion project as PDX said was an extra that wasn't part of their plan etc, cool, but that means there was only planned one flavour pack this year alongside one expansion.

That makes one flavour pack a year, and so far an expansion pack every third year.. I know I know it won't be exactly like that but:

CK3 released in 2020
Northern Lords released in 2021
Royal Court expansion and Iberia flavour pack released in 2022

So that makes it plausible to believe that:
2023= one flavour pack early that year and maybe one more late that year.
2024= expansion release about three months in(march)
2025= very early release of flavour pack and one more released about 8 months in maybe
2026= third expansion released in spring
2027= flavour pack in February and maybe one more in September..

I'm going off the rails here but.. it's just so little for so much waiting..

Edit: this is me trying to guess optimistically
This sounds like a good timeline to me.

As someone who finds it hard to commit to playing when there's new content coming soon, I appreciate the breathing room. I'll have time to have multiple playthroughs, tinker with mods without worrying about compatibility with vanilla and play other games to prevent burnout - like Stellaris...

I guess your "oopsie" from Bastion that has caused a great number of Dukes to have no Counts whatsoever due to aggressive revocation is not a big enough deal, even though it makes your Feudal system look completely anachronistic...

I get the anachronism problem, but at least it makes AI more competitive.
A good solution might be for AI dukes to only revoke titles until there is no vassal count that has more counties than them.

i really would like to get the achievement for creating the granduchy of austria und bring a habsburg in every kingdom in europe.

one thing i really hope for is a save dna function.so i can select older saved dna und use or modify them.

>There will be no more expansions for the game this year, at most a small update

With how many copies of CK3 Paradox bragged about selling, it absolutely baffles me how slowly content is released for this game.

Love the game, kind of disappointed in the speed that content is being developed at and we are really missing some key features still.

  1. Republics
  2. No council system for rulers (I really thought it added to the game having to have your council support your decisions about going to war, who got what land etc...)
  3. War events, I mean come on this was really cool. Need that added back in, where events take place during the battle and you have choices. Really adds to the roleplay of a warrior type king.
  4. Umm, really need pandemics and the like. The idea of disease spreading through the game, needs to come back.
  5. Difficulty, still need to up this. Some of the features mentioned above would add to the difficulty.
  6. Societies - loved those things

There are allot more. But above are things that I think really need to be added and makes the game lack depth in key areas.

Not trying to be rude here, so please excuse me for being direct: after last week's "look forward to the next Update from us as it should have more information on the work we have been doing!", I expected a little bit more than basically "we're working on stuff, and it's not gonna release this year".

I'm well aware of the limitations you have regarding sharing the exact nature of the exciting new content you're working on, but this is the second week in a row that is a bit lacking content-wise.

It's a stark contrast to the Stellaris DevDiaries; they have more than one per week, and all full of new and upcoming content. When I think back to pre-RC times, when you guys even shared little sneak peeks during summer break with us, I can't help but notice the apparent drop in quality and quantity of CK3 DDs. Makes me wonder what happened between then and now.

Anyway, I appreciate the declaration of transparency and am looking forward to next week's DD.

A good solution would be to change their behavior based on their traits/personality.
Backstabbing, arbitrary, brave, ambitious, etc characters would try to hog as much land/power as possible, no matter the title.
Lazy, forgiving, generous, humble, craven etc characters would maintain the status quo, even if it leaves them at a disadvantage.
The rest should aim for a middle ground where they have at least 50% of their demesne covered or fully control their main duchy.

Just a thought.
Better than the great barony cleansing most people experience.

That's because RC and the patch had actual content to be teased, namely the Culture Traditions

Also, could it be possible to avoid having only a few days between the announcement and the release? Northern Lords had 3 days and Friends and Foes had just about a week, which is really really bad for modders - especially for big teams.

Sure, that'd be an even better expansion of that.
But the anachronism point still stands and by my understanding most dukes had counts beneath them. So even if their stewardship would allow for more domains, it might still be a reasonable realism decision to not have them tyrannise the only 2 vassals they have just for more game balance and ai strength.

So unless ambitious, callous, deceitful, paranoid, etc. i don't think the rampant count cleansing should be allowed to the extent dukes currently do that. That kings and emperors get 100% control of their main duchy is not a problem to me. But maybe the majority of dukes should not have that luxury to avoid anachronisms.

Hmm. The news in this Dev Diary is a mixed bag.

I am glad that the team is trying hard to communicate through multiple channels (though the forum is optimal in my view). Of course I welcome the free update later this year, especially as I understand from earlier DDs that free updates are primarily intended for bug-fixing as well as new or improved mechanics. My wallet won't mind the lack of new paid content, given the higher prices.

I am disappointed that there are no more patches in this cycle. I am not aware of any game-breaking bugs, but the only way to improve the AI in a PDS game is through iteration. I know that there will be many internal builds that we never see, but I still suspect that an open beta would deliver a colossal amount of data that would result in a substantially better game.

I am surprised that there are two teams working in parallel on new content. That must multiply the complexity of development compared to a single team working on a single build. I would prefer to have one team focused on new content and one team focused on bug-fixing and polish. I appreciate that it would be less fun for the devs to be on a team that never made new content and just fixed other people's mistakes, but the deal is supposed to be that they get the pay and we have the fun.... ;) However, it is clear from this thread that there is heavy demand for new content (and of course there are legitimate commercial considerations) and for whatever reason PDX senior management seem committed to a multi-studio strategy, so I guess that the CK3 team do not have much room for manoeuvre in this regard.

It makes me nostalgic for CK2. Particularly in 2012-2014 and 2017-18 we were treated to lots of new content and a game with a relatively low bug count. Best wishes to the devs as you continue to work hard to get the franchise back to that form.
