Recently we got to know the entire map in Project Caesar, as Tinto Map Talks have already covered the entire world. The level of detail compared to previous games is great - we will be able to discover even distant wastelands like Bouvet Island etc. However, on the released maps, it can be seen that there are still a few islands/archipelagos missing, which I would like to draw your attention to and analyze together with you.

First of all, it should be noted that most of the missing islands discussed in this thread would only play a cosmetic role, as they are too small, or uninhabited to this day due to their inhospitability. Such islands would be just decorative wastelands, simply a background element. However, there are also a few that are inhabited and played some role in history, so perhaps they could be considered additional locations. Some of the missing islands are coastal islands, which, although not very important, can be added to the neighboring locations on the mainland to improve the depiction of the coastline.

This thread is therefore used to search for missing islands, understood as land masses replaced by water in the game, which can be considered an inconsistency on the part of the developers. Whereas, this thread is not intended to list islands that are already represented in the game and you have seen them in released screenshots, but you would like them to be a separate location, etc. This is a completely different issue.

I am not sure if we know the exact scale of the map in Project Caesar and how much we will be able to zoom in. However, some of the released screenshots allow us to determine how small islands can be represented in the game at the adopted scale. As an example, we can give the Niua Islands in northern Tonga, which consist of three main islands of different sizes. The smallest of them is only 3 km² and is still visible on the game map (although due to its small size it is part of a single location with a neighboring larger island). Fun fact - there is also something that is not even an island, but only a sea shoal. This example gives us some idea of how small islands can be visible in the game after zooming in, as well as what can be considered a separate location and what should not.

In many other screenshots we can confirm the presence of many other islands below 10 km² that are visible on the game map, some well-known like Pitcairn Island (4 km²), others completely useless and decorative, like Saint Paul Island (8 km²) in the southern Indian Ocean. Some small but recognizable and more important islands may also be slightly enlarged, which is not a new practice in PDX games.

Of course, it is difficult to expect every rock in the sea to be present in the game, so I tried to choose only such missing islands that seem to make some sense from a gameplay perspective, or despite their only decorative function, seem to be large enough that they should also be consistently added, since similarly sized or even smaller islands already exist in the game. This is a list (WIP):

Missing islands.png

NameAreaLocationDescription
Campbell Islands113 km²Southern Pacific OceanAs the main island of the archipelago covers 112 km² (what is more than twice the size of the whole Pitcairn Islands - 47 km²) it is strange that it has not been added yet. It could be a pair island for the neighboring Auckland Island, which we can see on the map. The island lies next to an existing sea lane, so access should not be a problem.
Antipodes Islands21 km²Southern Pacific OceanLocated outside existing sea lanes, so it could be an unreachable wasteland (like Jan Mayen seems to be). The main island covers 20 km², which is almost as much as the Nauru Island (21 km²).
Kermadec Islands33 km²Southern Pacific OceanThe islands, though uninhabited, were visited many times by the Polynesians, who called them Rangitāhua (lit. "the stopping-off place"), which aptly reflects their potential in-game purpose as a halfway point on a new sea lane directly connecting the Tonga islands with New Zealand. Most of the archipelago area consists of one island - Raoul Island (29 km²).
Fatu Hiva85 km²Central Pacific OceanOne of the main islands of the Marquesas, omitted for unknown reasons. Since the entire archipelago is likely to be one location, this would be just another of its component islands, slightly changing the layout of the surrounding sea locations.
Clipperton Island8 km²Eastern Pacific OceanA small, uninhabited atoll, in the past used as a temporary base for pirates and privateers. A bit far from existing sea lanes, it could be an unreachable wasteland, or serve as a blind branch of coastal waters connected to the nearest sea lane.
Cocos Island23 km²Eastern Pacific OceanSince its discovery in the 16th century, the island has remained uninhabited, but for centuries it was a refuge for pirates and buccaneers because of the abundance of fresh water, wood, fishing, and coconuts. Because of this, many legends have arisen about treasures hidden on the island. The island does not appear to exist in the game, although it is conveniently located at the junction of one of the sea lanes with coastal waters.
Gorgona Island26 km²Eastern Pacific OceanA coastal island in Colombia. It may be attached to one of the locations on the mainland, as we can see in other regions that similarly sized coastal islands are included in the game.
Desventuradas Islands5 km²Eastern Pacific OceanThe name itself (lit. "Unfortunate Islands") suggests that the best option for them would be to become another wasteland. Their presence would, however, slightly change the shape of the local coastal waters, adding an additional area north of the Juan Fernández Islands already present in the game.
San Andrés and Providencia52 km²Caribbean SeaAn archipelago of several islands, the largest of which are San Andrés Island (26 km²) and Providencia Island (17 km²). The islands are inhabited and are still the subject of a territorial dispute. In the past, they have changed allegiance many times, belonging to Spain, England, France, the Netherlands, and often to pirates, including the famous Henry Morgan, who used it as his base. For these reasons, they can be added as a new location, or possibly attached to one of the nearby locations on the mainland. Also known as the Raizal islands.
Sable Island31 km²Northern Atlantic OceanSable Island is famous for its large number of shipwrecks, as it is located in the middle of the main transatlantic shipping route. An estimated 350 vessels are believed to have fallen victim to the island's sand bars. There's probably no need to make it a separate province, but it could be attached to some coastal province on the mainland, while the main change would be to adjust the sea provinces around the island to accommodate the need to bypass it, rather than pretend there's nothing there but water.
Anholt22 km²Baltic SeaOne of the two main islands in the Kattegat strait. While the larger of the two, Læsø (101 km²), is present in the game, this one has been ignored, even though many smaller islands in the area are included. Since in the game Læsø is part of a nearby province on the mainland, the same should be true for Anholt.
Fernando de Noronha26 km²Central Atlantic OceanThe main island (18 km²) is inhabited, with the main settlement of Vila dos Remedios and a population of around 3,000. Since its discovery in the early 16th century, the archipelago has changed hands several times, to the British, the French, the Dutch and finally the Portuguese, who fortified the main island. It also has access to a sea lane that is already in the game.
Trindade and Martim Vaz10 km²Southern Atlantic Ocean
The main island of Trindade makes up the bulk of the archipelago, while the Martim Vaz islets are just a group of rocks out in the sea and so can be ignored. The island lies outside the game's existing sea lanes, so it could be an unreachable wasteland or it could be located next to a new lane that would allow direct travel from Brazil to Africa, such as Cabral's voyage during which he discovered Brazil:
Voyages map.jpg
Agaléga Islands24 km²Western Indian OceanThe archipelago consists of two islands, the North Island (14 km²) and the South Island (10 km²). Both are inhabited, the largest settlement is Vingt Cinq. The islands lie just on the sea lane already existing in the game.
Cocos Islands14 km²Eastern Indian OceanThese islands are available and colonizable in EU4, but in Project Caesar they disappeared underwater. Situated between several sea lanes, they could be connected to one of them.
Daitō Islands44 km²Philippine SeaAn archipelago of three isolated islands located southeast of Okinawa. The largest of these are Minamidaitōjima (30 km²) and Kitadaitōjima (11 km²). Since they were settled late (19th century) by the Japanese, they could be a wasteland in the game, the coastal waters of which would be an additional sea area east of Okinawa.
Moneron Island16 km²Sea of JapanA small island west of Sakhalin. In the past inhabited by the Ainu, so it could be attached to one of the coastal locations on Sakhalin, as is already the case with similar islands off the coast of nearby Hokkaido and Honshu.

If you see any more missing islands, share them in the comments. In my spare time I will update the list with the most interesting suggestions that meet some minimum criteria. As a reference point you can use probably the best map ever created for the PDX game, the E3 Map Project mod for Darkest Hour, made by @mumia (blank map attached below).

You have a really good eye because I can't see anything major that sticks out to me as missing. Great work, but I do think the islands south of New Zealand might be a little too obscure and irrelevant for the game. The only thing I can think of is that I would like to see Kilwa Kisiwani located on an island in the game, which I don't see on the map. The resolution isn't great though so it might just be me. Speaking of African trading port islands throw in Mombasa as well.

For me, it is the absence of islands in the South China Sea, although they are small, they are indeed useful. So my suggestion is to add two island locations, called 'Qianli Shitang'千里石塘 and 'Wanli Changsha'万里长沙 respectively

Personally I would love to see some of the islands off the French Atlantic coast included as I think it would be great for gameplay. E.g. GB being able to take these as naval bases. I am thinking of islands like Ushant, Belle Isle. Ilse d'Yeu. Also I cannot remember if Helgoland is included, but if not I think it should be.

First of all, I don't think the devs will add these islands even as a single location due to their tiny size and scatter, but I had to put it here anyway (and in the Indonesia Tinto Maps thread) and see what people think, and because these islands has their own uses at least for the local people. A massive empire would think these islands are just some rocks or stopovers, but a low or middle tier duchy or kingdom would consider these islands as valuable fishing grounds or trade routes, although it's difficult to develop them and thus largely stay poor to this day. Moreover, these islands should be a nuisance for passing ships since a lot of them are atolls or banks, and sea pirates will definitely attack those ships, or you can befriend them. That being said, I think that Muria Island, Banda Islands, and Thousand Islands should be playable and the rest could be for decorations only, at least for later game updates or for modders to add them

NameAreaLocationDescription
Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu)
10.18 km²
Java Sea, north of BataviaA string of 342 islands, some of these Islands was used as forts, miltary posts, and the rest are fishing villages or mangrove forests. One example is Kapal/Onrust Island where a warehouse, fort, and shipyard was built in the 1610s by the Dutch before they captured Batavia
Banda Islands172 km²Banda Sea11 islands in this island group and 7 of which are inhabited. The only source of nutmeg and mace until the mid-19th century
Nusakambangan Island121 km²South coast of JavaOn the Tinto Maps, Nusakambangan Island is depicted to be connected to the Java mainland, but actually it is separated by Segara Anakan lagoon
Muria Island?North coast of JavaSame as above, it is depicted as connected to Java in the Tinto Maps, but Java and Muria used to be separated by Muria Strait. Trading harbors and shipyards were built in the banks and made that area richer than the center of Majapahit, this ended in around 1657 when fluvial deposits from the rivers made the strait shallower and connected the two islands. However, it is still prone to flooding, in fact, it's been flooding again recently
Masalembu Islands40.85 km²Java Sea, north of MaduraJust some fishing islands where Madurese, Banjarese, Buginese, and Mandarese live and mingle with each other, just like the other 6 islands below this table row. Coconut and Corn are also planted here. You could make it into a Singapore if you're a good gamer!
Masalima Islands23 km²Strait of Makassar"Masa" means "Many" and "Lima" means "Five". There are 7 islands in this island group, and 5 of them are inhabited or at least could be inhabited some years after the game start, these islands are some of many islands including Tengah, Sabalana, Balabalangan, Spermonde, Kalukalukuang, and Derawan that was part of Gowa-Tallo Sultanate which you can see in this mapping video
Tengah Islands?Flores SeaSome inhabited islands and lagoons, some uninhabited. Fishing villages, coconut trees, you get the idea
Sabalana Islands2694 km² (including the large lagoon)Flores SeaSame as above
Balabalagan Islands1.47 km² (land area only)Strait of MakassarCoral islands that stands on a bank that is connected to Kalimantan, fishing ground for the native Bajau people, difficult to navigate around without local knowledge
Spermonde/Sangkarang/Pabbiring Archipelago140 km² (land area)Southwest Coast of SulawesiA group of 120 islands, 50 vegetated islands and 70 unvegetated sand cays, 50 islands are inhabited. The biggest island is Tanakeke Island which ironically means "Small Land"
Kalukalukuang Islands?Strait of MakassarThe name "Kalukalukuang" means "Coconut Islands" in Makassarese, shocking
Derawan Islands?Celebes/Sulawesi SeaThe history of this island is unknown, except for how these islands are named by the Bajau through folk stories, which you can read here (PDF). Nowadays it's a pretty cool travel destination for honeymoon with your Instagram girlfriend

There are many missing islands in Ireland, all of which are inhabited and big enough to form 3 separate locations. The Aran Islands are missing, Inishturk, Inishboffin and Clare island. There's also the Howth peninsula, which is a large hilly peninsula connected by a narrow sand-spit, which is just missing in game. Also Achill island is fused to the mainland similarly to Yns Môn in Whales.

If 20 km² is fair game, Gorgona island could be added, it's notorious for being Francisco Pizarro's refuge for several months during his second expedition to Peru, and like a lot of islands, a refuge for pirates.
San Andres too. Not only it was settled during the game’s timeframe, but also changed hands several times, and it continued being disputed between Colombia and Nicaragua as recently as last year.
