I thought Ireland was never part of the Roman empire?
Russia wasn't but that didn't prevent them from larping. Everyone wanted to be Roman Empire back then, everyone. Even Ottomans, who literally destroyed it.

By the way, I've observed in the last few days an interesting correlation. The probability of receiving a "respectfully disagree" reaction for posts where I explained that German "emperors" claming to he "of the Romans" had literally no impact on "Byzantine's" Romanness increases when members have German-sounding nicks and Prussian eagles in their avatars. Fascinating.

Potentially controversial:
The game should ship with only the two options "Byzantium" and "Eastern Roman Empire" as a game rule, like currently.
Then, every couple patches, a new option shall be added. Basileia ton Rhomaion, Rhomania, Empire of the Romans... then when reasonable options have run out, sillier ones like "Unholy Roman Empire", "Roman Empire 2.0.", "Rome, not the first, but before the third ", "Where all roads lead to (except the ones that don't)", "Successor state of the glorious Latin Empire", "Claimants to the rights of the righteous rulers in Trebizond"... and even possibly ones that could appear in reaction to the current game state, for instance "Actually Holy Roman Empire" if the HRE were to be dissolved. With a properly caustic description under each option in the rules menu, of course. In short, this country's name shall become the new comet event.

Then, when the final patch comes, all those options shall be disabled. The game rule shall have as its one and only option some hideous fusion of as many names as the devs can manage. Like "Unholy Rhomanian Basileia of Eastern Byztantinople".

Also, said final patch shall be patch 1.45.3.

That's it. This was my contribution to the debate. *silently folds back into the mass of anonymous lurkers*

The most accurate name for them would be “Empire of the Greeks”, they weren’t Roman at all by the start date in any meaningful sense.
In 1204 the most “Roman” people in Constantinople were the Venetians

of Rome(the city), so the Pope i guess
By that definition you are correct. Can you see that that is not the only definition available?

Most prominently, you can define "Roman' as "citizen of the Roman Empire", and the inhabitants of Greece have had Roman citizenship and no other citizenship for over a millenia.

Even if you reject that definition though, why is only the First Rome Roman? Why isn't the Second Rome, Nova Roma, the City of the World's desire, not Roman? Even at the present where the Pope calls himself Roman, he's not the only one, the Patriarch of Constantinople is also Roman.

The City was founded by a Emperor of the unified Roman Empire as his new capital of Nova Roma, he moved much of the Senate there and everything. A nation is not its location, it is its people, and in the 4th century the people moved.

Maybe because none of them are actually Roman and this larping is cringe?

Define "Roman" for me.
Having relation to the city of Rome.
The Venetians, who religiously submitted to the Bishop of Rome, used Latin in their liturgy, were ethnically Italian, and had formed an army that was operating nominally under his commission, were more closely tied to Rome than the Greek successor state in Constantinople

Why doesn't Nova Roma count as Rome?
