1.04 and old save games

I had been moving along quite well as Italy, and then updated to the 1.04 patch. Now it fails to load the save game. Several message boxes appear, complaining about movement commands in the file. And it acts liek the file is a scenario file (starts by letting me pick what nation I want to play).

Is there a way to fix this?

I had not heard of major problems continuing from 1.03B, however it is always suggested to start a new game when installing a new version. i.e. finish or discard the current game before upgrading.

What's done is done though right. So as for what can be done about it now, I would say not much. Pretty much the only thing is to restore the game to the version you started the game under, finish the game, then upgrade.

What version did you upgrade from?

The problem sounds like the 1.03->1.03b problem where the movement format in the savegame was changed. That is fixable if you know what you're doing but it's a pain in the neck. Much better to just reload the old version or start a new game. Many of the improvements of a new patch won't be available in a game started with a previous patch anyway.
