Hi,
Just loaded 1.05c and it is _noticeably_ sluggish on my 933 P3/128MB. OK, this machine is getting kinda long in the tooth now, but I've had no issues with any prior version including 1.05 which I had a brief look at a while back.

It also seems to access the HDD every 1 1/2 seconds exactly, anyone got any idea what it's doing? I'm on W98 and killed everything except windows and HOI--and I know it was HOI, coz it stopped when I exited. It's like a little heartbeat...

This version is too annoying to be playable on my system anyway, it just sorta seizes up scrolling around the map. And that was before I even flicked off the pause button.

If you have not already done it, then rename the AVi folder to AVI_back. If thaty does not help , make sure you have the latest Audio and Video drivers, you may also want to unistall and do a fresh install after defragmenting your drive.

1.05c is a slug...

Huh? What's this supposed to achieve?

It did not help. Is there any particular reason I need to do those things specifically for 1.05c? Everything was fine as far as 1.05. It seems to me its resource requirements have now increased greatly--anyone else observe this? Anyone have counterexamples for that matter?

Did you rename your AVI folder to AVI_back? your reply could be taken either way.

Did you do the other suggestions?

Yes, done it all.

In addition I renamed music to no-music which has stopped the heartbeat. It seems that music volume 0 means keep reading the audio files anyway, play at volume 0. This is braindead is it not?

Anyway, no real improvement. I suspect that several things are now not scaling all that well and since the implementation is unlikely to change, I'll just have to get a faster PC with more stuff.

If I may make a couple of suggestions, it's probably time to consolidate the leader images into runtime libraries as storing them on the filesystem is most inefficient. Perhaps one file per nation, with a lib tool for modders to manipulate them?

Similarly it would be nice to be able to turn off some graphics options. Frinstance, I don't mind if the flags don't wave.

The event system will be unmanageable soon. That's an observation, not a suggestion :) The text file structure is looking most creaky and unstable...

You could make those suggestions in the scenario forum if you like, the audiance there may have better input then me.

I had no problems with it on my P2-300 notebook (but with much more memory: 416MB). This was with music turned off (using hoi_settings.exe) since MP3 decoding uses significant CPU cycles on processors that slow. I think the 128MB is the most likely hardware problem; there have been many reports that HoI uses a lot of memory. It does run noticably better at high speeds on my new P4 w/256MB laptop though so CPU does help.

More memory is always a good idea.
