Ever since I installed 1.06c it has been crashing..alot.

Friend and I were playing a game..when I installed 1.06c..it would start crashing at the "creating/loading game" screen there.

We had been playing a game from 1.05c..thought that might be it..started a new one..seemed to work till we go to load the save today and it crashes as well.

It crashes as soon as I hit start, in single and multiplayer. In the game we were playing before the patch and that continued after the game would also crash for me everytime we annex'd a country.

We have both uninstalled, and reinstalled a few times....5 times at least for...and the installs were proper 1.06c installs.
Anyone have ANY idea on what to do?
Thanks alot.

The game does load..it loads roughly 10 percent of the time, and it is very random on when it loads.

The release notes says that you should uninstall HoI, install again, and apply 1.06c patch.

If you applied 1.06c on top of 1.05c, that may be the problem.

He says he has uninstalled and reinstalled "5 times atleast" So I doubt another time is going to make any difference here. ;)

Are you experiancing any problems with SP only games?

yep..both single player and multiplayer...i dont play the single very often, and since the 1.06c patch i have not played single so i couldnt tell you about the annex problem, but because its a hassle for my friend to load up, quit out and rejoin...i have often tried to get the single player to load up first, then quit that to the main menu and go into multiplayer...but..the single player crashes as well.

WELL!

Seems I have figured out what the cause of the crashing is.

I was in the 1024x768 res mode for the game...ever since I installed 1.06c it has been crashing like I said..now it seems the only way I can play the game is with the game in 800x600 mode.

I do not have a crap computer or crap vid card...the game worked fine till the 1.06c patch at all the res'.
Does anyone have any idea's what is causing this?
I did not make any changes in my vidcard or settings at all either.

WELL..so I just thought of something that i never thought of..becuase i'm a bit of a rubber...that my vidcard driver was crap..so i went and got hte newest one from radeon and wooo..seems to work fine now!!!

Installing the patch may have changed the res you were running the game in?

You could try different refresh rates, Also make sure you have done the following:
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Good to hear. And interesting.

Changing the display settings - regardless of apparent lack of logic - is a very 'cost effective' way to start trouble solving.

I wonder what caused this change in requirement in your case... Probably we can only speculate. Maybe the sprite related changes in the update has something to do with this? ("- Fixed the sprite glitches"). Just a guess...
Did you try 1.06 only by the way?

Looks like we posted at the same time. :)
Yup a standard thing when encountering any problem is to update windows fully then update video and sound drivers.

I am experiencing very similar problems with 1.06c and I will try these suggestions. How does changing the avi folder to avi_back help?

EDIT: Gotta love these forums!!! Downloading the latest drivers worked like a charm. Oh, and I know what changing the folder name does, too: it skips the intro video.

Thanks for such a great forum!

Not only does it skip the intros it stops the BInk player from loading into the system at all, It is the Bink player which causes problems often because it fails to unload from memory properly and can cause crashes even in game.
