Not enought women!

I think with the distant cousins there is no women left for my king to marry I'v looked through most of europe and found only 4 that weren't over the age of 60 and none of them would accpet my marriage proposal for my king or his heir. I think the distant cousins are causing this.

Agree 100%!!!!

Distant cousins also create prestige inflation (marry them off to 40+ widows to get 10-20 prestige a hit)

all right lets have a sexist discussion.:D

Do we need more women?

At least some of the distant cousins turning up to court looking for handouts from their kinsman should be WOMEN!

I'd rather eliminate the country cousins but if all country cousins are men and some of them end up being married (at least I try to marry them off for prestige) then it stands to reason there will be a shortage of women.

Also - why are all bastards men?

(and no - if our female players are reading - I didn't get that the wrong way round :D )

Did not the Fuedal system send females-born-out-of-wedlock to convents or something? The only few times a female child born this way was kept at court usually were because 'the Monarchs allowed it' or maybe because the Lord was short on any heirs. I could be wrong. However, if so, then there would be few, if any, Lady cousins or females-born-out-of-wedlock (maybe there is a name for this, I don't know <shrug>). Many legitamate cousins probably were not allowed at court, but a few were because they were marriagable (had landholdings and powerful fathers type thing.)

Just my thoughts as to why there might be fewer ladies in a game I don't have yet :)

Of course - if we are talking about courtiers then there should be a preponderance of men. But the problem is that marriage is an essential part of the game and I'd estimate that the ratio is around 3:2 or worse male to female. Of course the better marriage prospects do have a better chance of catching a young bride but the courtiers of Kings etc make it very hard for mere Counts to get all their sons married off.

I don't think that there was a shortage of brides in the middle ages. We should try to get a ratio closer to 1:1 for males / females even if the extra females do not have any prestige.

Also it seems many of the scenarios starts with very few woman and lots of unwed rulers. In many cases the ruler even have registered legimate children, but still no wife, not even a dead one. Most likely because the wife is not historically recorded, maybe adding a few random generated wifes to obviously maried rulers (anyone over 30), would help on the marriage spree all the games starts with.

What might make a good fix is an option to "marry down". A courtier could marry a local woman who's not in the court (a burgher or peasant). The bride would have poor attributes (3-5). There would be a prestige loss also, maybe 1-10, depending on the rank of the courtier.

This option would allow the lower courtiers to marry, despite the shortage of women in the courts. The prestigious courts and courtiers would still prefer to marriage in their class. But poor younger brothers of counts could still get hitched.

Of course, this might be too difficult to implement in the current game.

Well, I still don't have the game, but the problem could be the muslins! They can be kidnapping the women to create their Harem, some Muslin rules had 50 women!!! :D

Search in their court, they will be there.

The cloned cousins need a major revamping:
By carrying your name and stats, they make your line less unique.
By being all male, they imbalance the male/female ratio.
And finally, there's no point to them if you have a big court.

The another problem is that the newly arriving courtriers - after the death of an old one - are mostly men (or if they are women they are so old... :( ).

So, we need more women!! :D

I 100% agree :D

err except I recently happened to have only girls as children, so in a sense, I could rejoyce because they'll have no problem to find a good husband amongst the available ones, but, hey, that doesn't secure my dynasty.

Seriously, the idea of being able to marry a courtier with local women would be a good part of a solution imo.

I agree, the problem is very bad at the beginnings of scenarios.

Perhaps they did send illegitimate women off to convents. But there were many men who died in battle (which doesn't really happen to the leaders of armies, at least so far in my game), so I don't think it was as imbalanced as in the game. Throw in the women who die in childbirth, and you are a bit short in the game. Maybe you don't get to pick from a set of lower-class women, but perhaps there should be an option for "marry a local woman" that would have random stats generated. Don't have to be low stats necessarily - just a small prestige hit and the fact that it's randomized without you getting to pick what stats you want should make it be a worse choice than picking a bride if you have the option.

I think they should just get rid of the clones and have a button to upgrade somebody from the lower class to the court either a male or a female. That would fix everything. I'm gonna put my game on hold untill the next patch becuase I don't want one of my clones to inherit the throne of scotland becuase I can't find a women for my sons!!!

dunno go on a conquering spree and you soon run out of courtiers to give counties too... rather like the current system if
1. More Women turn up
2. Agree they should not all be clones
3. you can fire courtiers you dont like
4. (and most important) you can EXCLUDE pagans/muslims if you wish

That sounds sensible. It seems the shortage of ladies to wed makes the finding a bride a big part of the game. Technically, it was, back then, to get an -Important- wife. Guess it is all part of the game, but if one could 'marry down locally', at least a player could get an heir (then again, such a thing was always a MAJOR concern of the Nobles back then.)

So, realism, or gameism?

Maybe a little bit more 'game' as Tom recommends, but not too much :)

Heh sorry for dragging this thread up, but i think if you could marry down there would be more chance of marrying a bastard daughter. Atleast, even if she is a bastard, she has some noble blood in her and if you're a powerful ruler, there would be courtiers tripping over themsleves to marry even her.
