Betty Robinson was only 16-years old when she won in Amsterdam 1928 Women 100 m Gold Medal.
Robinson was born in Riverdale, Illinois, U.S. in 1911. She ran her first official 100m race, an indoor event on March 30, 1928, at the age of 16. At her next race, outdoor at 100m race she equalled the WR. Her third 100m competition was at Amsterdam Summer Olympic Games in 1928. She reached the final and won, equalling the WR second time.
In 1931 Robinson was involved in a plane crash and was severely injured. She was found at the crash site being unconscious and mistakenly thought she was dead. Robinson's rescuer took her to the undertaker where she was found to be alive, but suffering for multiple severe injuries.
It took six months before she could get out of the wheelchair and two years before she could walk again, she missed the 1932 home Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, but she recovered for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and won gold in 4x100m relay event for Team USA.
