Ruler commits suicide

Last night I was surprised when my very successful ruler (only in his late forties) commited suicide. I've had them die of old age, but never commit suicide. As far as I could tell he had no psychological disorders. Fortunately, I had an heir ready, but it caught me by surprise and could have prematurely ended the game.

New, but related issue, does the game allow a ruler to abdicate and take the cloth? I'm thinking that a number of pious rulers may have wanted to take the cloth/become priests, once they had secued the line of succession. It would make an interesting twist to suddenly have your ruler take the cloth. Possible benefits would be a one time bonus to the realm's piety/prestige and a greater chance that the ruler will be canonized.

Neat idea.

How does cannonizing affect the game? And to be sainted.. i mean.. the character is dead.. does he give extra piety to the ruler or something?

To successors, yes.

It does? I didn't know that.:) To what extent?

Hmm...I forget the actual bonus, but I definitely recall that having a saint as a predecessor gives you a tidy helping of piety right off the bat.

I had a son that got the "depressed" trait, and commited suicide. Damn him!

Literally.

Wasn't there a bug in 1.00 or 1.01 where people who died by suicide could be canonized?

Don't worry, the church will take care of that. :)

The event is probably lacking some trigger to make it more realistic, I'll have a look...

Was your leader stressed? I have had this happen twice and both times he was stressed so I don't see any problem with it.

I recently had a Byzantine Emperor commit suicide, He had mmense prestige but he was in the middle of trying to change the Empire into salic primogeniture so he had been playing whack a vassal for 10+ years. I know it doesn't effect the event but I had just been invaded by the Turkmen and they were overruning much of what had been secured when he commited suicide. His oldest son had rebelled to so his father had perfect timing, he commits suicide my son inherits and spanks the turkmen. Since I had been contemplating opening the console and using the die cheat I was very very happy.

The event has the appropriate triggers in 1.02

You may have not look properly.

NOT A BUG, apart if you come back with serious evidence.
