Papal State destroyed and undead pope

I know about the problem of the undead pope, has been discussed to death. but in a current game of mine started in ver 1.02 I am dalarna I have become king of sweden and quite a bit else.

Italyhas fallen to the Zirids, even Rome. I invade and destroy them but when I am carving my conquest up among my vassals I realize. No Pope anywhere on the map. I try to create something in Rome, a Duchy or something but no options. I give it to a bishop not the bishop of Rome but not il Papa.

I looked in save game file and Pope died 30 years before has no claims and no territory, but since I am papal controller I can still excomunicate. but I can't even find the pope to try the "kill" cheat. Surely this is not WAD.

If Papal States are destroyed is there anyway for Papacy to continue?

maybe next in line becomes Pope but in their own bishopric? Maybe that can become new Papal State?

There has to be a better way. If this has been mentioned before please tell me where.

try creating the king of the papal state title and grant it to your bishop in rome, or check the map is the papal state exists somewhere on the map(hungary, poland, germany, etc. some bishopric that got assimilated by some previous pope)

as they say in Rome: We are the papacy. Open your gates and prepare to be conquered. Resistance is futile.

I suppose it's possible that if the Papal States is wiped out, the pope goes into "exile", Avignon style. Which in game terms perhaps would be that there are no papal elections but still a pope who can excommunicate folks.

Or perhaps it's just a bug :D I hope to find out once my duchy of Apulia has grown strong enough to vanquish the bishopric-stealing menace known as the Pope.

did it work with granting the kíng title?

Change the bug title and logged as FEEDBACK

In my current game I took all of the Papal States. When I load the game it automatically makes me the Papal Controller (I get the message), but I do not have the ability to excommunicate, which would seem WAD since there is no pope. All I have is a tiltle.

What may be a bug is the fact that I get the message telling me I am the Papal Controller in the first place, since no such person should exist.

Can you zip up a copy of that save game and send it to me CaBhaal, because I want to test some events that might help this phenomenon.

Just PM me if you are willing, and I will give you my e-mail address.
