Hi there, oh wise players of DV.

I've recently gone on a crusade to capture Jerusalem, and succeeded. However, I vassalized the Emir of Jerusalem instead of killing him. The crusade hasn't ended yet (a year or so later), and quite a few kingdoms have declared war on my new vassal. Is this normal, or should I have taken Jerusalem for my own (to give to a christian duke) for the crusade to end?

A few more things, now that I'm here. If a vassal of my vassal declares independence without war, his duke gets a claim on him, but I don't. Is there a handy way to deal with this without grabbing titles etc.?

And what do you usually aim for, once you get a strong kingdom? Crusades? Expansion? I don't really see too much point in the latter, since it just makes your empire harder to control...

And how exactly does the mobilization of your vassals' vassals work? If I order my duke to mobilize, he raises only troops from his personal demesene. I can still manually raise troops from his loyal vassals, but I was wondering if there is a better way.

And how exactly is the pope elected?

Thanks for your replies!
Cheers!

I am very new to this game, but I'll take a shot at two of your questions.

First, crusades ending is a random event that can trigger only after the object has been taken, but maybe long after. I don't know whether you should've installed a Christian ruler, but I do know that every additional county adjacent to the target which you capture increases the likelihood that the random event will trigger.

Second, isn't there a 'global mobilization' button that will mobilize all of your vassals AND all of your vassals' vassals?

1- Other rulers are still going to war with the emir of jerusalem because although you are a christian, he is still a muslim. I think that if he converts to christianity (which is likely to happen eventually since he has a christian lord now) other rulers will stop declaring war on him, but you might want to just revoke the count of jerusalem title from him and take it yourself until the crusade ends and things settle down there.

2- Are you sure you don't get a claim on the title? I thought you did.

3- This is where a lot of the fun of the game comes in. Once you get a good grasp on the game it gets pretty easy to make a large powerful nation, but remember that crusader kings isn't so much about nations as it is about dynasties. You can make up whatever ridiculous goal you want such as converting the whole map to your religion, but a goal I commonly go for is to institute members of my dynasty as kings of as many other realms as possible. For example if you are playing as the Knytlings and your empire is in control of all of scandinavia you might want to try to take germany and then release it to another Knytling, or try to get a Knytling to inherit the crown of England through marriage (and lots of assassinations:)).

4- There is a "grand mobilization" button that mobilizes all of your troops, your vassals' troops, and their vassal's troops all at once. Besides that and the way you mentioned I don't know of another way.

5- Not 100% sure, I think it's just whichever catholic bishop has the highest piety at the death of the current pope becomes the next pope. I usually don't pay much attention to popely matters.

1. sadly no ... that is not how it works. When you vassalize someone in a war, anyone who had declared war on that ruler is still at war with him. When you conclude peace, you only do so for yourself and your vassals. That is why you should not force-vassalize when you are not the only one at war with the ruler.

@OP: The cusade ends by event, which can fire at any time after tha target is in the hands of a christian ruler. The more of the surrounding provinces that are also in christian hands (doesn't have to be the same who holds the target) will reduce the time it takes for the end crusade event to fire.

2. That is how it works .. only the immediate liege gets a claim, as he is not your vassal. And no, you'll have to either grab it yourself or wait until the duke declares war by himself and then help him out in getting the land back.

3. Depends a lot on who you play. If you are a small count, then becoming king is usually a first priority. I like to set certain goals for myself. F.x. I started a game as the Duke of Barcelona. My goal was to conquer Iberia and North Africa. Once I had done that, I gave out all the appropriate titles for the areas (keeping only King of Aragon for myself). I actually installed a jewish ruler in north africa :D

4. That is the way to get free troops without a loyalty hit :D ... actually the vassal of yours get the loyalty hit as he is the direct liege. But it is pretty gamey. I guess Grand Mobilization is the best way to do that.

5. I think they look for people who are also related to the past pope, but am not sure about that either.
