Introduction

Greetings folks.

I've been wanting to do a narrative AAR for Stellaris for some time, and finally decided to do it. I was mainly inspired by my imagination - every time I researched an anomaly, I imagined the science ship's crew going on a grand Star Trek style adventure to discover something. Every time I had a space battle, I imagined the Admiral giving orders to his Captains. I imagined troops on the ground, fighting on hostile alien worlds. Diplomats talking to alien leaders. All that sort of thing.

The format will be in two parts. I will explain things in a broad narrative style, then zoom in on particularly interesting occurrences by telling the story from a character's perspective, all supplemented with screenshots. My hope is to follow each character through multiple stories, and each will hopefully give an interesting but different viewpoint from the others. I might have a short story from the perspective of the empire's leader, then have one of a scientist exploring new worlds. I'm not sure how long each short story will be, some may be a few paragraphs others longer. I'm not giving myself any restrictions for writing length.

As for the game, I am using 1.2.1 and the mods Extra Colours, Extra Emblems, No Clustered Starts. 24 other empires, 3 advanced starts, 4 arm spiral galaxy.

Feel free to give suggestions, praise or constructive criticism.

I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy creating!

The prologue will be posted shortly - stay tuned!

Prologue- A New Dawn

1.png

Over a century ago, in the year 2095, six great ark ships of the Ulysses Initiative disappeared into wormholes, never to be heard from by the people of Earth again. Five of those ark ships were torn apart by the unstable wormholes or crashed into uninhabitable worlds.

One ark ship made it through unscathed. Emerging in a new solar system, the ark landed on a planet strangely reminiscant of Earth - and perfectly habitable for humans. The two hundred a fifty thousand colonists quickly realised they were a long way from Earth, and would probably never see it again - the wormhole generator of the ark ship had not survived the journey, clearly not enough effort was made into making it stable.

To make matters worse, this new world was already inhabited by all manner of dangerous alien wildlife. These indigenous life forms were not sentient and could not be reasoned with, and launched relentless attacks on the peaceful human colonists attempting to establish a new home. Hundreds of innocents died in these attacks, but the Colony Council continued to push for peaceful coexistence, citing that the mandate given to them by the United Nations of Earth did not include exterminating new species.

After several years of running, hiding, and being hunted by the native aliens, the few military personnel had had enough of their Council's cowardice. The Keld Massacre resulted in a thousand deaths in one day, where a group of the "Keld" - monstrous fleshy beasts of many eyes and limbs - were able to enter a colonist compound when the local Councillor ordered the few troops there to not engage at a safe distance. With the people's support behind them, the military took control.

--

Grand Marshal Reece Beauclair

"Open the door, councillor!" Reece Beauclair yelled into the intercom for the third time.

"You can't do this! I am your councillor! I was elected!"

"You lost your mandate the moment you let those people die." Reece pointed at the door. "Blow it."

Two troopers carrying explosive charges moved up, attaching the devices to the door.

"Fire-on in ten."

The squad moved behind cover. Reece and his comrades had seen enough innocents become victims of the Keld. They, and the people, were taking control.

"Fire-on in five."

Reece covered his ears. The door blew open with a loud bang, a cloud of smoke and dust obscuring entry into the councillor's chambers. Reece ran in, laser rifle at the ready, his squadmates behind him.

"In the name of the people, stand do-" He wasn't there. A window to the roof of the complex was open.
"After him." His squad moved hastily to the window. Reece took control of the colony's intercom, pressing his mouth against the speaker.

"People of Ark City, do not be alarmed," he began, "your councillor has been arrested for treason. Please remain calm while we begin a transition of leadership."

--

The Dawn of the Commonwealth of Man had begun.

Immediately conscripting all fighting age men and women, the new Grand Marshal of the Commonwealth launched an aggressive campaign of extermination against the ferocious aliens. The Keld were the first target.

--

Private Vlad Kremensky

The bio sensor attached to Private Kremensky's wrist was beeping faster and faster. They were getting close.

The further they pushed through the dense alien jungle, the darker it became. The strange scaled trees loomed over them like unmoving sentinels.

Scans made by recon drones had determined the main Keld nest was in this vicinity. Major Brandis, Kremensky's company commander, had volunteered to spearhead the assault. It was a battalion-level dismounted attack - the jungle was too thick for any vehicles.

A screeching noise from ahead made the squad halt.

Corporal Jacques signalled for him to scout ahead. Pushing his growing unease aside, Kremensky nodded and crept forward, laser rifle at the ready.

Taking one step at a time, he could feel sweating dripping down the back of his neck. He had not seen a Keld up close before - only shot them from a safe distance of four hundred metres. They were bigger than humans, and ferocious. Their clawed limbs could rip a man to pieces. It was the Keld who had committed the massacre that prompted the military's takeover of the Colony.

The screeching noise again. It was closer this time.

Kremensky looked behind him. He could just see his squad through the trees. Corporal Jacques moved up to his position.

"See anything? Jacques whispered, perspiration fogging up his ballistic goggles.

"No," answered Vlad, "but they are close. Real close."

Jacques nodded. The corporal his pressed his wrist mounted communications device to his mouth.

"Bravo Two, this is Two Three Alpha, probable Keld position located. Continuing clearance, acknowledge?"

"Bravo Two, roger, continue clearance. Out."

Jacques waved to the rest of the squad to move forward.

"I wonder how far-"

With a terrifying screech, a fleshy monstrosity burst through the undergrowth, its many bulbous eyes glaring at the troopers.

"KEEEELLLLDDD!" yelled Kremensky, unleashing a salvo of laser fire at the beast.

This was going to be a long battle.

--

After a long decade of fighting, humanity gained supremacy over their new world. The Grand Marshal named it "Unity," a symbol of humanity's bright new future. Able to live in newfound safety, the population of Unity set about building infrastructure, while the military consolidated their control and mopped up any remaining alien resistance.

The Commonwealth Science Institute discovered that they may be able to reconstruct the broken wormhole generator of the ark ship, and build smaller ships to explore the local solar system and one day determine where they were in the galaxy. The Grand Marshal set the Commonwealth into dedicating itself entirely to this endeavour, even if it were to take a hundred years. Soldiers scoured the globe for resources to supply their new mission.

A generation passed, and humanity had once again prevailed. A humongous space station was built in Unity's orbit, able to dock many future ships. Several crude vessels capable of interplanetary flight were launched into the atmosphere.

Most important of all, the Science Institute had built a working, stable wormhole generator. With these new advances, the Commonwealth of Man was ready to take its first steps into the stars.

Reece Beauclair was on his deathbed before his dream could be realised, and named his daughter, Sidney Beauclair as the new Grand Marshal at the age of 33.

--

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

The crowd was enormous. Sidney Beauclair estimated that half the human population of Unity was standing before her.

She stood on a balcony overlooking Ark City, the capital of Unity. Ark City had sprung up around the ark ship that had borne her parents, and was the largest and safest city on the planet.

The centre of the city was the newly named Victory Square - a clearing amongst the buildings made in honor of all those who died in the Alien War. It was Victory Square she looked upon now, crowded with people who wished to listen to her address. They waved flags bearing the emblem of the Commonwealth of Man, and cheered in anticipation.

Sidney raised her arms to quiet them. Silence fell upon the populace.

"People of Unity, my brothers and sisters of the Commonwealth," she began.

"It is with great sadness that I must inform you of my father's death." Gasps of shock and despair erupted from below. "He was a great man, a great leader. Indeed, I am doubtful any of us would still exist were it not for him.
"We will mourn him, and respect him. I plan to build a monument of his likeness in the Hall of Memories, so all future generations may venerate our first Grand Marshal." Murmurs of approval could be heard.

"Reece Beauclair could not live long enough to see his dream realised - the Commonwealth reaching beyond Unity. However, I plan to see this happen within the next five years."

On cue, three newly constructed space ships rose from behind the ark ship with a great roar, hovering thousands of metres above, casting great shadows over Victory Square. Sidney felt shivers of anticipation crawl over her skin. She imagined the crowd felt the same.

"We have finished construction of these ships you see before you. The spaceport that will hold them will be complete in a matter of months. However, the most important news I must share with you, people of Unity, is this: the Commonwealth Institute of Science has finished plans for a new wormhole generator - a safer, stable version that bore our elders on the great ark ship you see behind me."

The crowd went wild. Not many people were still alive that came to Unity on the ark, but all had been told the tales of how humanity had braved the dangers of the cosmos, and found a new home here. It was the most important tale of the Commonwealth's people.

Now Sidney Beauclair was showing them how they could do so once more.

"My father told me it was our destiny to explore the stars - to rule the stars. We are all living proof that we can move to a new world, an alien world - a take it for our own. No human-slaughtering aliens stopped us from doing this, and they never wil again. We, humanity, must embrace our destiny - we will set forth, and conquer the galaxy!" The crowds jubilance rose; chants and cheers echoed throughout Victory Square.

"People of Unity, people of the Commonwealth - will you join me on this sacred mission? Will you join me to reach the stars?"

A new age was dawning for humanity. An age of interstellar travel and discovery.

Part 1 - Reach for the Stars

With the population of Unity behind her, Grand Marshal Beauclair lead the Commonwealth of Man into the stars. First, the system surrouding Unity's star of Deneb had to be explored.

The first Science ship in the Commonwealth's fleet, the CNS Zenith commanded by Exploration Officer Angelo Balletti, began its mission to scour the system.

The Grand Marshal ordered the Science Institute to continue its research. The Chief Scientist of each of the three divisions of the Institute set their teams to work immediately.

The Physics Division set about improving the laser-based weaponary of the Commonwealth's miitary. If there were dangerous aliens on Unity, there would be more elsewhere, and this time the Commonwealth would be ready.

The Bioscience Division began researching how to construct a smaller version of the ark ship Unity's populace originated from. From this, the Commonwealth could colonise new systems, and embrace humanity's destiny to inhabit the galaxy.

The Engineering Division looked into how to improve Unity's already impressive spaceport. A bigger spaceport would mean bigger ships, and improved orbital defenses.

Meanwhile, the newly promoted Admiral of the Commonwealth's fleet, Jennifer Daniels, stood sentinel over the peoples of Unity, forever watchful for some unknown alien threat.

The day-to-day administration of Unity was undertaken by Governor Kimiko Ishikawa.

A few months after the Commonwealth's great mission begun, a second science ship was constructed.

The CNS Vagabond, lead by Exploration Officer Hiroshi Yamaguchi, would be the first to use the new wormhole station for interstellar travel. All in the Commonwealth's command team crossed their fingers that it would work.

--

Exploration Officer Hiroshi Yamaguchi

Through the CNS Vagabond's viewport, Hiroshi could see the newly constructed wormhole generator up close.
Though kilometers away, it was large enough that he could study it in detail. A marvel of engineering, he wondered how much effort went into planning and building it.

"Two minutes until wormhole generation," First Officer Keeler said.

"Very good. Continue." Exploration Officer Hiroshi Yamaguchi had volunteered to be the first through the wormhole, as had his entire crew. It was potentially a suicide mission, or one of no return. Their forebears on the Ark had gone through a wormhole, and had lost contact with their homeland forever. The Physics Division of the Institute had assured him it was safe and would work. He was sure of its success too, until now.

"One minute until wormhole generation."

What if it didn't work? Not only would the Commonwealth's future be put into doubt, but him and his crew could be condemned to eventual starvation in the void, or being torn apart by cosmic energies within the wormhole itself.

"Thirty seconds."

The wormhole generator begun to light up, projecting a stream of light several kilometers in front.

"Ten seconds."

The stream of light began to grow larger, soon creating the initial opening of the wormhole. Swirling in a spiral, the energy finally stabilised.

'Wormhole generation complete. Permission to enter?"

Hiroshi gulped. Here we go.

"Granted."

The CNS Vagabond's thrusters roared to life, and the ship pushed into the wormhole.

"For the Commonwealth. For Humanity," Hiroshi said, mostly to stop himself from thinking about the ship ripping apart.

The wormhole consumed the ship, energy swirling all around it. Then, in an instant, it was gone. And before the CNS Vagabond was an entirely new star, surrounded by planets.

The crew cheered.

"We made it!"

--

With confirmation that the wormhole generator worked, the Commonwealth of Man redoubled its efforts.
As the CNS Vagabond surveyed this new star system, it made a discovery.

--

Exploration Officer Hiroshi Yamaguchi

The wormhole had been a success - and they had managed to contact the Commonwealth on Unity as well.

Hiroshi Yamaguchi was feeling pretty pleased with himself.

They had begun scanning the system - now known as Tiama - beginning with a wintery world covered completely in snow and ice, which they named Tiamat IV. They had figured that perhaps there was life on this planet. With ice came water; with water came life.

"Sir, you gotta see this." First Officer Keeler could not contain her excitement.

"What have you found, Keeler?"

"Bio scans have detected...something."

Hiroshi looked at the scanners.

"It appears they have detected native life, First Officer." He smiled. "Send a drone down. I want confirmation."

"Yessir!"

--

The Commonwealth of Man would discover more than alien fauna among the stars.

Part 2 - We Are Not Alone

Exploration Officer Angelo Balletti

"Scans 75% complete."

"Very good." Angelo Balletti peered through the viewing port of the CNS Zenith. The science ship was conducting orbital scans of the asteroid LR-2129, the largest in the asteroid belt that circled Unity's star of Deneb.

He had been nominated to lead the exploration team of the Zenith - the first ship to move beyond Unity's orbit. Their first mission, given personally by Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair, was to explore the Commonwealth's home system. So far they had found nothing out of the ordinary. Some of the planets surveyed possessed natural resources that could be exploited. After sending his findings to Unity, he had recieved word orbital mining stations were already under construction, and even a photo of the Commonwealth's huge constructor vessel at work:

These were good findings. But Angelo felt there had to be more.

His colleague, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, had lead the ship that tested the wormhole generator. The entire Commonwealth held its breath when the CNS Vagabond made its voyage. It was a resounding success, and Angelo was more than a little jealous of his comrade's rising fame.

Surely there was something more in their home system of Deneb?

"Scans 80% complete."

LR-2129 seemed to be nothing but a barren rock. Craters of varying sizes dotted its surface. He looked more intently, and saw something...

"First officer?"

"Sir?"

"Can you take us closer to that crater," he pointed a smaller crater on the asteroid's surface, "I think... I think I can see something there."

"Roger sir."

The CNS Zenith halted its scanning, and glided gently towards the asteroid's surface. The First Officer took the ship as close as safety allowed.

"Right there." Angelo pointed at an irregularity on the rim of the crater.

"I can't see what you mean, sir."

"Its right there... we are still too far away. I'm going down." Angelo turned on his heel out of the bridge. "Prepare a shuttle."

***

Science ships possessed the capability to send small teams in shuttles to investigate places unreachable by the larger ship. Angelo was not the type of person to order others to do the work for him - he would lead the team himself.

The shuttle touched down on the barren asteroid with a slight thud. Angelo made a quick last check of his astro suit, and his two team members did the same. The ramp of the shuttle came down, and the vaccuum of space smothered the humans.

No longer being held by the gravity stabilisers of the ship, Angelo was able to jump huge distances with each step. In a few short bounds they made it to the edge of the crater.

"What is it?"

"I have no idea."

Some sort of metallic surface was protruding from the crater's rim. Angelo knelt down next to it, pressing his scanning device onto it.

"Its... a door."

"A door?"

"A very large one. A hatch, maybe. If we can scrape away some of the rock..." Angelo fired up his comms. "Exploration Officer Balletti to CNS Zenith. We've found something. There's a facility inside the asteroid itself."

"Say again, sir?"

"We're going to need a drill."

--

The discovery that the system of Deneb had once been home to an ancient species' spaceport confirmed the Commonwealth of Man's greatest fear: there were once aliens out there with a technology level above humans. Perhaps there still were. With every new system explored, with every potentially habitable world discovered, more and more signs were pointing to the possibility that humans were not alone in their struggle for interstellar dominance.

Knowing about the alien fauna on Tiamat IV and the ancient spaceport on the asteroid LR-2129, the people of Unity knew it was merely a matter of time before the Commonwealth's brave exploration teams found something more.

--

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

"Ma'am, we have an emergency transmission from the CNS Vagabond."

"Patch me through." Sidney Beauclair was having more and more 'emergency transmissions' of late. Each time she feared it would be something horrible - but she wasn't sure what.

Here, in the Command Centre, she was in control of everything. Scavenging the old communications relay from the ark ship on Unity, the Commonwealth had built a central communications node in the heart of Ark City. Sidney and her command team orchestrated humanity's interstellar journey from this facility.

On the huge viewing screen, Exploration Officer Hiroshi Yamaguchi's worried face appeared with a small crackle of static.

"Grand Marshal, ma'am," he bowed his head.

"Let's hear it, Hiroshi," she answered, dismissing his formalities with a wave of her hand.

"As you know, we have just completed surveying the Tiamat system. However, just before we conjured a wormhole to enable our return... we..."

Sidney narrowed her eyes. Hiroshi's nervousness was becoming tiresome.

"We came into contact with...these things..."

"Receiving photgraphic images, ma'am," Sidney's aide said.

"Display."

"What in the world..." Sidney was at a loss for words. Giant, spacefaring alien monsters? "Hiroshi, are these creatures hostile?"

"We don't know, ma'am."

"Have you tried communicating with them?"

"Yes, but to no avail ma'am."

Sidney rubbed her forehead with her fingers. The last time humans had dealings with aliens who couldn't be communicated with, thousands had died. That would never happen again.

"Hiroshi, take the CNS Vagabond back to the Deneb system. You are being reassigned."

"Yes ma'am!" The feed to the CNS Vagabond cut off, and the viewing screen went blank.

"Get me the Admiral. We'll see if Sergio Marino's new lasers are as good as he says."

--

Mere months after discovering these gigantic spacefaring creatures, Exploration Officer Balletti's colleague Hiroshi Yamaguchi found more proof of sentient spaceborne aliens.

The signs were clear - someone had a spaceport in the Deneb system, and someone had left their mark on Ommaggus VI. Coupled with the discovery of some very old mining equipment with still-active defence systems:

There was only one conclusion for humanity.

We are not alone.

I'm definitely on board for this one. Thanks for the wonderful prologue as well--nice take on what leads to the Commonwealth of Man.
Thanks! Yes, I thought it was interesting that the Commonwealth of Man's description explains the reason for them being seperate from Earth, but doesn't actually explain why they are fanatic militarist xenophobes, or a military dictatorship. I thought there had to have been some kind of event on Unity in the hundred years they were there to develop that sort of mindset.

Part 3 - Treachery

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

Documents awaiting her inspection or approval piled high on the Grand Marshal's desk. She had spent the last few weeks going through them all, and had spent precious little time in the command centre.

Sidney Beauclair's quarters were large, but spartan. The only ostentation she allowed was a large Commonwealth flag hung on the wall behind her, and a painting depicting her first speech at Victory Square. Those were simpler times. All the people were behind her, and there weren't new threats waiting around every corner.

The latest Ark City Herald lay on her desk. Its headline was "We Are Not Alone," followed by a state-approved picture of the strange beasts found a few weeks ago - that were subsequently terminated by the Commonwealth's warships.

She had read enough Old Earth history to know Governments leaving their citizens in the dark eventually came back to haunt them. So she let the people know what was going on in the Commonwealth's grand space venture. She let them feel the fear of the unknown that she felt in her own heart. A fearful populace was a cautious populace. Faced with so many new discoveries, caution was what she required of the people more than anything else.

Sidney shuffled the documents around, and peered at a photo of what would surely be on the Ark City Herald's front page. It was ancient alien ruins found on an asteroid several systems from Deneb.

She wondered if this "Star Assembly" was responsible for the disguised spaceport the CNS Zenith had discovered in the Commonwealth's home system. Whatever they were, she was glad the Vultaum were long extinct - humanity had enough problems to deal with without a sentient, space faring empire on the loose.

In the same report, Angelo Battelli had detailed the discovery of a Vultaum mining base.

Apparently it was too decrepid to be used for humanity's purposes, but its study could result in some interesting progress for the Science Institute's Engineering division.

The message light on Sidney's intercom started to flash. She pressed the recieve button.

"Yes, secretary?"

"Ma'am, sorry to bother you, but the head of the Institute's Bioscience division has been urgently attempting to contact you."

"What does he want?"

"He says that the construction of a colony ship would now be feasbile."

Just what the Grand Marshal needed to get away from all this horrendous paperwork.

"Send him in."

--

With the advent of the colony ship, the Commonwealth of Man could now begin colonising new worlds. Humanity's destiny of an interstellar empire could now be realised.

Two potentially habitable worlds had been located within wormhole distance of the Deneb system. Both were slightly larger than Unity, and of a similar environment. The Grand Marshal ordered a colony ship to be built and sent to the Tiamat system at once - the newly named Tiamat Prime would be the first of many colonies to be established.

In a mere two years, a ship loaded with colonists had landed on Tiamat Prime. Though infested with some hostile alien fauna, the Commonwealth had learnt its lesson from the past and began immediate pacification of the planet's creatures. No alien would threaten a human again.

What no one predicted, however, was a group of traitors to arise from the human population.

--

Admiral Jennifer Daniels

The newest warship of the Commonwealth fleet, the CNS Goliath - a Dagger class corvette, fitted with ship-borne lasers - drifted out from Unity's spaceport. It had taken the better part of the year, but Jennifer Daniels' fleet had doubled in size since humanity first ventured out into the void.

Grand Marshal Beauclair had told Daniels that the fleet had to be expanded, citing the multiple new space-borne aliens discovered over the past few years. Daniels had complied, and using the vast amount of resources being extracted by the Commonwealth's new orbital mining stations, construction had begun.

The naval forces of humanity now numbered six vessels - each crewed by several hundred men and women. Admiral Daniels had seen the ships in action once, when they exterminated the bizarre, ship-sized Designation Alpha aliens previously. The forces of Man proved more than a match for the threat.

"Ma'am, the sensors for the Celebrai mining station are being activated," Lieutenant Hayden said, interuppting the Admiral's chain of thought.

"I want visual confirmation." The ships view screen lit up with a live feed of the Celebrai system's outskirts.

"Mining station Charlie-2 under attack, ma'am!" said Lieutenant Hayden, stating the obvious.

"Assemble the fleet! I want all Captains reporting in the next two hours!" Admiral Daniels sat down on the command seat in the bridge and turned to her attendant, while the other crew members ran about preparing the vessel.

"Those ships look like civillian freighters outfitted with our own weapons. Get me a comm link to the Grand Marshal." Jennifer Daniels never thought she would say her next few words. "Someone has betrayed us."

--

--

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

Sidney rubbed her forehead with her fingers. A few hours ago, she had been informed that for the first time, one of the Commonwealth's facilities was under attack. But not from aliens.

No, they were being assailed by traitors.

Who would betray their own species? Who would have the nerve to steal innocent civillian craft, and turn the vessels into machines of war?

Sidney reached into her memories. These criminals wouldn't be lead by just anyone. No, someone with military experience. Someone who had access to the Commonwealth's stockpile of ship-borne laser weapons.

Thinking back to before she was Grand Marshal, when she had been escorted through the compound where the first of the Commonwealth's warships was built, a name entered her mind.

Myra Gupta.

One of the supervisors for the installation of the ship's weapons, Myra had made some very treasonous remarks within Sidney's earshot. Sidney had voiced her concern to then-Grand Marshal Reece, her father, but he insisted Myra's loyalties were true. Even when Myra had disappeared, just before Sidney inherited the responsibilities of Grand Marshal, no one thought more of it.

Sidney Beauclair was not as forgiving as her father.

The Grand Marshal activated her comm link, punching in the frequency for Admiral Jennifer Daniel's flagship, the CNS Success.

"Grand Marshal, ma'am." The Admiral waited patiently for her orders.

"Admiral. I know who is behind this attack. One Myra Gupta. A traitor to our species, and the Commonwealth. I want her alive."

"As you wish, Grand Marshal."

"I repeat, I want that traitor alive. This is not something we have dealt with before, and I never want to have to deal with it again. Destroy the other ships, but you take Myra prisoner."

--

Admiral Jennifer Daniels

"All ships, sound off." "CNS Valorous ready." "CNS Trumpet ready." "CNS Goliath ready." "CNS Guardian ready." "CNS Triumph ready."

With her fleet standing by for attack, Admiral Daniels sent her orders through. She positioned the ships in a classic "V" attack pattern. They outnumbered the enemy, and so would flank them on both sides.

"All ships, maxiumum thrusters, direction thirty degrees. Attack pattern Victor." Chimes of approval appeared on the CNS Success' viewing screen.

Sensors indicated the three enemy ships were straight ahead, still bombarding the mining station they had attacked earlier. It was a good thing the stations were so durable - though it was severely damaged, the facility was still intact.

"Prime all weapons. Scan for targets. For the Commonwealth!"

--

The battle was short, but violent. The enormous laser cannons of the Commonwealth's corvettes tore through the traitor ship's flanks, just as Admiral Daniels had planned.

Unfortunately, the CNS Triumph drifted too far to the left flank, and exposed itself to fire from the rearmost enemy ship - clearly the flagship crewed by the traitor Myra. The Triumph was cleaved in two by the lasers of the enemy; its crew sent into the cold void.

The enemy flagship was disabled and boarded by Commonwealth marines. An escape pod had been launched from the ship just prior to being boarded - and Myra was nowhere to be found. All the survivng crew were taken prisoner, and the ship was then destroyed.

--

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

"She wasn't on the ship?" asked Sidney.

"No Grand Marshal." Admiral Jennifer Daniels had a nervous glint in her eye. She had failed to achieve the one directive the Grand Marshal had given her.

"They must have a base somewhere..." Sidney Beauclair rubbed her forehead.

"Scour all our outlying systems. That traitor can't have gone far."

"Yes ma'am!"

"Inform me immediately when you discover their whereabouts." Sidney paused. "And make sure you capture her this time. I don't want you to fail me twice."

--

The Commonwealth fleet began its search immediately. Fortunately, it appeared the traitors did not possess any more ships for the time being. The Commonwealth was safe once more.

For now...

(stay tuned for Part 4 - Threat from Below)

Part 4 - Threat From Below

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

The Commonwealth's High Command chambers overlooked the Command Centre, where dozens of operatives sent out orders and received data from all of the Grand Marshal's subordinates.

Sidney Beauclair peered out of the ballistic glass that separated the two rooms, admiring her operative's intensity and dedication. Behind her sat the High Command team at a large rectangular table.

Admiral Jennifer Daniels; General Hui Xu; Chief Scientists Sergio Marino of Physics, Kimberly Stark of Bioscience, Mareka Oylinola of Engineering; and Unity's Governor Kimikoa Ishikawa all patiently awaited the Grand Marshal.

"Are we ready to begin?" asked Sidney, turning to the group behind her.

"Yes, Grand Marshal."

"Very well." Sidney took her place at the head of the table, and activated the viewing hologram situated in the center of the team.

"Let us start with your latest innovations, Chief Scientists. Show me what the Institute has achieved in the past few years." Sidney leant back and clasped her hands together expectantly.

"Grand Marshal," Sergio Marino began, "I am very happy to report that the Physics Division has made an improvement to our ship-borne laser weaponry. Observe."

Sergio pressed a button on the table, and graphs off data comparing the old red lasers to the blue lasers appeared in the hologram.

"As you can see, these new blue lasers are even more powerful that the old red lasers. I would expect them to make short work of any enemy ships."

"Very good," said the Grand Marshal, "confer with Admiral Daniels to see our fleet refitted with these new weapons."

"Of course, Grand Marshal." Sergio sat down.

"Mareka?"

"Grand Marshal." The Chief of Engineering stood, and changed the hologram to display a diagram of a Commonwealth soldier outfitted with a bulky exo-skeleton.

"The Engineering department has completed research into combat exo-skeletons, based on designs originally used by construction teams."

A video began to play, depicting exo-solders lifting heavy objects.

"As you can see, once our ground forces are outfitted with these exo-suits, their strength and stamina will be boosted considerably, further enhancing our army and marines already considerable force. In addition,"

The video changed to an exo-soldier activating a mechanism on his wrist. A high strength laser blast launched out of it, and bore a hole in a steel wall to the soldier's front.

"The exo suits can be outfitted with single charge anti-vehicle and anti-fortification weapons. Every man will be worth a whole squad with these suits."

Sidney smiled with satisfaction.

"Excellent work, Mareka. Confer with General Xu after this. I want all ground troops trained and outfitted with these exo suits as soon as possible."

"As you say, Grand Marshal." Mareka sat down.

"Kimberly, I hear you have some pressing issues to discuss," Sidney asked.

"Indeed, Grand Marshal." Kimberly Stark of Bioscience stood, and changed the hologram display to show two strange looking aliens.

"Our two Exploration teams have made startling discoveries on the systems just outside our controlled space. Two new species of aliens have been discovered."

"Why is this so pressing?" General Xu asked, "we've discovered hundreds of new species the last few years."

"These two species are sentient."

Sidney Beauclair leaned forward.

"Sentient?" she asked.

"Indeed." Kimberly Stark adjusted the hologram to show videos of the two species. "The first are sentient, but luckily for us, are currently no more than primitives. They currently pose no immediate threat, unless we decide to colonise their world, and will continue to be harmless for at least the next several hundred years. Assuming they do not progress too fast."

"Very well," the Grand Marshal responded, "keep monitoring their progress. We will leave them be for now. And the others?"

"The 'Caphevad,' as they call themselves, are technologically equivalent to our ancestors during the Middle Ages."

"So they have knights and castles?"

"Not quite the same. But we expect them to be, at minimum, a thousand years from any sort of space flight. That said, any foray onto their world would be met with more organised resistance than we have had in the past." Stark deactivated the hologram.

"Install an observation post in orbit. We will keep a close eye on these Caphevad. May even learn something useful," Sidney said.

"As you wish, Grand Marshal."

"Now, for the primary reason I called you all here today."

Sidney Beauclair stood, and pressed the button that lowered screens over the ballistic glass to their flank. She didn't want any of the operatives seeing what she was about to show.

"None of this leaves the room unless I say otherwise, understand?" Sidney eyed her High Command intensely. Satisfied with the nods she recieved, she continued.

"The greatest threat to our civilisation to date has shown itself on Tiamat Prime. Our first colony could soon be completely eradicated, which as you all know, would be a tremendous blow to our progress. This grave threat comes not from space, or the surface, but under the crust of Tiamat Prime itself."

The hologram in the center warped into a cut-away of Tiamat Prime, displaying various tunnel complexes beneath the colony.

"Earthquakes have been felt by colonists the past few days. And its not a natural occurrence."

"You are saying, Grand Marshal," asked General Xu, "that there are aliens tunneling towards the colony from underground?"

"Yes, General, and if this data is correct they will be through the surface in a matter of months."

"Then we must strike!" General Xu struck his fist on the table. "Grand Marshal, allow me to lead forces into their tunnels. We will fight these aliens before they kill any innocents!"

"No." Sidney waved her hand dismissively. "While I agree we must strike preemptively, I do not want thousands of our soldiers being cut to pieces in tunnels thousands of metres underground. There must be a better way." She looked around the room. "Suggestions?"

The High Command team were silent for a time, thinking over potential plans.

"We could send nerve gas into the tunnels," offered Kimberly Stark, "and gas them out?"

"A possibility. But they could escape, and I doubt they would be happy with what we did."

Mareka, Chief of Engineering, raised his hand.

"I think I may have a solution."

"Go ahead, Mareka."

"If my team were to fabricate some seismic actuators - that is, explosives designed to create geographic disturbances - and strategically place them around this underground foe's tunnels, we could trap the aliens from escaping."

"And then flood their tunnels with nerve gas." Sidney nodded.

"Its decided then. Until we have removed the threat, only tell those personnel who absolutely must know, I don't want any of our colonists panicking. Mareka, get those explosives ready. Kimberly, work on delivery mechanisms for the nerve gas. General, I want a team of combat engineers sent to the Bioscience and Engineering departments to assist once the tasks are complete. You have your orders. Dismissed."

--

It took a matter of months, but the Engineering and Bioscience divisions of the Institute both completed their tasks. Handing over their devices to two small crack teams of combat engineers, the Commonwealth's high command could do no more now than wait.

On Tiamat Prime, the colonists were blissfully unaware of what was about to occur underneath their very feet.

--

Sergeant Sven Hendriksson, 3rd SF Combat Engineer Platoon

"ETA one minute, over," crackled the platoon comm-link.

Sven and his squad waited on the surface, in a standard all-round security defensive position. The other members of the platoon were grappling up from the small shaft they had drilled into Tiamat Prime's crust.

"Two three echo, roger out." Sven breathed in the fresh air of Tiamat Prime. The air here smelt better, cleaner, than on Unity. He had heard stories from his father about the monstrosities that used to live on the Commonwealth's homeworld. There were aliens on Tiamat Prime, but they were relatively placid compared to what once called Unity home. Sven wondered if those aggressive aliens were what caused Unity's air to seem so... unclean.

His thoughts were interrupted by the other squads of the platoon emerging from the drill shaft.

"Hey Sarge, how's the view?"

"Better than yours, no doubt."

The troops climbed out of the hastily drilled tunnel and took up position next to their comrades.

"Sergeant," the platoon leader knelt next to Sven.

"Sir?"

"Permission granted to fire on. I'm going to call for extraction. Get it done." The Lieutenant moved off to gain comms with command.

"Roger sir. Jackson, Guy! Bring the detonator here."

The two troopers brought the detonator to Sven, and quickly set it up.

"Ready Sarge."

"Alright. Hope those eggheads were right, and this works."

Sergeant Sven, after taking a deep breath, pushed down on the detonator.

A dim thump came from deep in the drill shaft. Several seconds later, the ground shook. To the colonists it would probably seem like another one of the earthquakes that had been plaguing them lately. They would know the truth soon.

Thirty seconds later, the ground stopped moving. Sven patted his platoon leader on the shoulder.

"Whats the word, sir?"

"Command's telling me..." the Lieutenant nodded his head, then lowered the commlink. "They reckon 100% casualties for those alien tunnelers. Good work troops!"

--

The operation to crush the underground threat was a resounding success. All those involved were congratulated by the Grand Marshal for their work.

A few days later, the colonists of Tiamat Prime were informed of what was really behind the earthquakes, and how they were saved by the vigilance of their leaders.

The Commonwealth of Man's High Command could breath a sigh of relief, and enjoy a moment of respite.

Unfortunately for them, it wouldn't last long.

Part 5 - The Battle for Na'Dall

Admiral Jennifer Daniels

Reconnaissance Report 42-A was worrying. A new system with a planet suitable to be colonised by humans had been discovered. The Exploration vessel had been on the verge of notifying Command of their survey results, and marking the system for future colonial exploitation. Then their scanners picked up something else.

Admiral Daniels looked over the image on her terminal. It was an unusual structure, and bioscans indicated it was manned by a number of human-sized crew. She and the rest of High Command could were unsure of its purpose. Some sort of frequency was being transmitted from the alien station, but its algorithms were bizarre and did not match any human-made communications.

The Science ship had been ordered to leave the system. The Commonwealth of Man had a more pressing concern.

Jennifer Daniels made her way from her chambers to the CNS Success' bridge. Crew members moved about the corvette's corridors conducting their routines, saluting the Admiral as she walked by.

When she reached the bridge, her First Officer approached.

"Ma'am, we are thirty minutes flight from Na'Dall. All ships reporting at one hundred percent efficiency. Bombardment targets are being preloaded into all guns."

"Excellent. Keep me updated. As you were." Admiral Daniels paced along the lower section of the bridge, moving to the Recon station.

"Lieutenant Chambers?" she asked.

"Ma'am?" Lieutenant chambers turned, throwing up a hasty salute.

"Are there any recent pictures of Na'Dall in your possession?"

"Yes ma'am, right here." Chambers handed the Admiral a datapad displaying holographic pictures of Na'Dall from space and its surface.

Na'Dall was of a similar biome to Unity. It had been deemed suitable for human settlement. This could not be achieved while it was populated by an aggressive native species, however.

Alongside the planet were diagrams of Na'Dall's native species, the Uthonians.

Strange creatures, who had evolved the ability to levitate over the ground to avoid land-based predators, the Uthonians were the most advanced aliens the Commonwealth had come into contact with to date.

Indeed, it was estimated by the Bioscience Division that the Uthonians were less than a hundred years from potential space flight.

The Commonwealth could not allow aliens to achieve this. An organised, space faring species hostile to humans would cost an enormous amount of lives and resources to defeat. The Grand Marshal had elected to follow a strategy of preemptively removing potential threats before they became a problem, and it had worked out well so far.

Admiral Jennifer Daniels and her fleet had been tasked with conducting a prolonged planetary bombardment of Na'Dall, destroying any surface military facilities and fortifications before the ground assault lead by General Hui Xu.

Though Daniels and her ships had not performed an operation of this sort before, she was eager to see the fleet's new upgraded weaponry in action. Even if it was targeting unmoving facilities on a planet far below.

Jennifer spent the next twenty minutes ensuring her fleet was completely prepared prior to their arrival at Na'Dall.

"Ma'am, all ships report targets loaded. ETA one minute to fleet's arrival at Na'Dall."

"Good. Order the fleet to encircle the planet, and move into position above their individual targets."

"Right away ma'am."

Jennifer could see the lush green and blue of Na'Dall through the bridge's viewing port now.

She hoped the bombardment wouldn't destroy too much of the environment - for an alien planet, it appeared to be quite nice.

Dagger-class corvettes moved past the CNS Success, getting into their assigned positions. The Commonwealth's fleet had grown. Seeing all eight ships move with such precision, and in complete synchronisation with one another made Jennifer's hairs stand on end. This is why she was Admiral.

"All ships reporting ready. Weapons primed and targets locked. Awaiting permission to commence bombardment."

Admiral Jennifer Daniels sat down in her command chair, crossing one leg over the other.

"Permission granted. Fire at will."

--

The bombardment of Na'Dall lasted for months. The Uthonians never saw it coming, and never stood a chance. Every installation that appeared to be vaguely military in nature was annihilated by laser fire puncturing down from the clouds. Collateral damage was high, and the environment surrounding target sights was heavily damaged too.

Weeks later, after the seemingly constant barrage of devastation began, it suddenly stopped. Uthonians all over the planet finally emerged from their hiding places. The military forces of Na'Dall's multiple nation-states lead the way, in case the bombardment was not over. The Uthonian's armies of fusion-powered hover tanks - the most advanced equipment in their arsenal - scoured the ruins for signs of an extra-terrestial enemy. They found none.

They were wrong.

Private Boris Kremensky

The roar of atmospheric entry was deafening. Boris couldn't hear what his squad leader was yelling despite being right next to him. The entire battalion was crammed like sardines into the drop ship, dropping at a considerable rate to the surface of Na'Dall below.

All the troopers were sweating. It was hot enough in full combat gear, including the new exo-suits all ground troops were required to be equipped with. They hadn't been tested in a real war yet, but they seemed to be very effective in training. As long as the suit had power, a soldier could fight for days regardless of how physically exhausted he was.

Not to mention the heavy laser mounted onto the left arm. Boris thought that his grandfather, Vlad Krememsky, would have killed to have had one of those during Unity's Alien War. Boris had seen the heavy laser go through a metre of solid concrete. Anything these alien savages had wouldn't be able to stand before them.

The roaring outside quietened. The drop ship had passed through the atmosphere.

"Thirty seconds!" came the yell from Boris' squad leader. The troops double checked their laser rifles and exo suits. One soldier threw up onto himself.

Boris had seen pictures of these Uthonians. They could levitate, but they were physically weak. He imagined in hand-to-hand, any Commonwealth soldier could tear one apart using the power of their exo-suits. He hadn't fought in a battle before - but he hoped it would be over quickly.

"Five seconds!"

The drop ship's reverse thrusters fired up slowing the landing. With a terribly loud crash, and a jolt that shook every man in the vessel, the ship landed.

"Let's move!"

Ramps located all along the rear of the ship dropped rapidly, and the exo-troops stormed out. Gatling lasers on the front of the drop ship blasted away at enemy positions, covering the infantry while they disembarked. This was the most dangerous stage of a drop. The "mad minute."

As Boris ran down the ramp, his ears were assaulted by the cacophony of noises. Yelling, lasers firing, explosions, and the beating of his own heart.

"Come on, Kremensky! Get over here!"

His squad knelt next to a ruined building. The Uthonian's structures were not designed for land-based species - all the entrances were halfway up each wall. Fortunately for the Commonwealth, exo-suits were powerful enough to punch through walls.

"Hover tank, three o'clock!" One of the Uthonian's fusion-powered tanks glided over the roof, its turret traversing towards the squad.

Without hesitating, Boris aimed his left wrist at the vehicle, allowing the heavy laser to lock on. Blinking at the 'fire' icon on his helmet's head-up display, a thunderous stream of blue energy coursed out of the weapon, puncturing a clean hole through the hover tank.

The burning wreck of the Uthonian's vehicle crashed into the ground with a satisftying crash.

"Nice shot Kremensky! Too bad those things are one-shot only!"

As long as the Commonwealth had more exo suits then the Uthonian's had hover tanks, Boris imagined this war would be over soon.

--

The invasion didn't last long. In the first few days alone, the majority of the Uthonian's military forces were neutralised. The Uthonian hover tanks were easily destroyed by the heavy one-shot lasers the Commonwealth's newly outfitted exo-soldiers were equipped with. Any air forces were shot out of the sky by swarms of unmanned Commonwealth attack drones. The strength and stamina given to the human soldiers by their exo-suits allowed them to clear through cities at an alarming pace, and all organised resistance had collapsed within a fortnight. A week of mopping up holdouts was all the remained for the Commonwealth of Man's army.

Grand Marshal Sidney Beauclair

"Grand Marshal, ma'am, Grand Marshal!" an arm shook Sidney Beauclair, and she rose from her desk with a fright. It was her secretary. She must have fallen asleep at her desk again.

"What is it?" Sidney's question came out with more scorn than she wished. She hadn't had much sleep lately.

"My deepest apologies, Grand Marshal, but I have urgent news."

"Out with it." Sidney rubbed her eyes. Paperwork was piled high around her.

"The last enclave of Uthonian resistance on Na'Dall has surrendered. The planet is ours."

Sidney smiled. The war was even quicker than General Xu had boasted.

"All right. Now, leave me. I have work to do."

Sidney's secretary hesitated.

"Thats...not all ma'am..."

"What now?"

"I think you better see it for yourself."

The holographic display of Sidney's terminal lit up, creating a new image.

"What is it, secretary?"

"Its... its an Ark ship."
