I'm playing the 1066 scenario and the Kingdom of Denmark was going along quite well for a little over 100 years. Then in the space of 7 years or so, I had two kings assassinated (I'm assuming that's the knife in the dark event) and one king die by illness at the early age of 21. This left his 3 year old son to inherit the realm.

Needless to say, I started bestowing titles like crazy since I had gone from able to control a demense of around 12 or so to being able to control 3. Regardless, because a 3 year old has no real stats (further reduced to zero by Realm Duress) the vassals started rebelling and I was in a near constant state of war for the next three years. Things have calmed down, but somehow I ended up at war with Germany and it looks like Sweden will rebel in a little over a year.

So, the question is, how to best preserve the realm? My ruler has a great uncle of around 40 years old who is the Duke of Western Sames and is pretty powerful with good stats. The current ruler also has an uncle who has pretty good stats and I can't remember what titles he has. If the current ruler (at the tender age of 6) bestows the King of Denmark title to either the uncle or great-uncle, has he abdicated the throne, but the dynasty lives on? Will the current ruler keep his other titles?

Thanks much.

If Denmark is your primary title then you can't grant away that title.

You can either save and reload the game as one of your uncle's or even better, stick with your current. If you survive, you will feel like you really have accomplished something :)

You can't grant it away but you could lose it in a peace deal to you uncle. However that would leave you as a 6 yr old count. You could then reload as the new king.

I agree with Veldmaarschalk to stick it out though.

I adjoin the previous ones, Isen't situation like that exactly what CK is supposed to be?

Ok, I'm sticking with it. We'll see how it goes.

If you want to change inheritance to some other branch of your family turn your realm elective. There is no problem as long as strongest vassal is member of the same dynasty as the ruler. Once your current ruler dies kingdom goes to strongest vassal. To increase chances of your selected heir give him more titles.

I have had fun in games where I have united Rus into single kingdom and all of my princes are members of Rurikovich dynasty, so I have switched to elective.

yeah there is nothing more awesome than seeing your realm come out of the other side of intense hardship stronger. In my current game as Duke of Barcelona -> King of Aragon the Caliph of half of Spain launched a jihad at me after I picked off some independent sheikdoms. Fortunately by a combination of luck a bit of skill and ruthless warmongering on my Muslim opponents vassals I managed to beat them and ended up with my realm doubled in size (and about 6k worth of debt that I am still recovering from but that doesn't count ). So even if you think you are screwed fight on!

I'm so glad I stuck it out. Little King Erik was able to hold the main parts of the realm together through luck and doling out titles and staying close to his uncle and grand-uncle. Through breakaway vassals offering massive gold donations for peace (and freedom), Erik ended up with over 12000 gold in the coffers. So it was just time to relax, grow up, and build some buildings in the demense.

Erik turned 16 and married a lustful gal. Alas, after two years, no children. But the time was ripe to go fight the Cuman Pagans. Kicked lots of butt and gave the slightly younger brother a dukeship and several count titles. However, ended up seriously wounded during this campaign. However with the prestige up, French and Spanish counts and dukes were lining up to be Erik's vassals.

Then Erik got illness and then pneumonia. The realm again went into disarray. That super-nice uncle, the Duke of Finland, broke away and there was no way to rein him in. Several others broke free as well. To add insult to injury, the still childless wife was caught committing adultery, so Erik had her beheaded. This seemed to work a miracle because he recovered from the pneumonia shortly thereafter.

He married a nice Greek girl then and she immediately got pregnant. And promptly died in childbirth and lost the baby too. The next wife had a high diplomacy score and was from somewhere in Russia. Again, great news right away...expecting a child. And finally at the age of 29 Erik sires an heir, Bjorn. Two years later, Bjorn inherits 4 dukeships and numerous countships from his maternal grandfather, who, I didn't realize, was a big deal out East. So Bjorn is whisked away from mom and dad to go rule out east. Same crappy situation as his dad, but it turns out worse. Bjorn the Baby King is dead at the age of three (I'm assuming assassinated) and Erik, King of Denmark inherits all of these titles from the East and a claim on almost every county in the East. And he comes down with illness again, and pneumonia AGAIN! The Muscovite county breaks free and the realm again, 20-plus years later falls into duress again.

We'll see how it goes for hard luck Erik from here...but what a story!

However with the prestige up, French and Spanish counts and dukes were lining up to be Erik's vassals.

Are you playing DV without the beta patch from October?? ... sounds like you have the Relations-bug, where every independent duke and count will pledge to the most powerful King, no matter where he is located on the map.

Or maybe you have successfully expanded into french and iberian territory?

I'm guessing I don't have the beta patch. Three rulers up the chain from the current ruler did expand into Portugal after an ally was attacked. That might explain the Spanish, but I was curious about why some French started to become vassals.

Well the spanish counts and dukes would normally only pledge to one of the spanish king-titles, not the portugese ... so I think it is obvious that you haven't the latest beta-patch.

You should definitely get that .... you can still continue your save game after it is applied.
