I see much real world maps in the forum already. I kind of know how you are supposed to do that, I tried a long time ago in SC4, but I never really got the grip of how it should work. Would someone be kind enough to show me the programs you use in order to make maps?

It's not complete, but it's a start. It doesn't cover the use of real world data - but that's coming later.
An article I wrote over at Cities Skylines Nation.

In general, you google for DEM, GIS, GeoTIFF, whatever is available for the area of interest. And you must have tools, free or commercial, to convert to a greyscale heightmap for further use or processing.
One really good tool is Global Mapper which can open and convert just about any format.

I know, but I would like to make heightmaps of real world places.
