Funny thing I discovered.
I was playing Portugal, starting with a max. recruiting pool of 20k and adding max.10k per year.
It is said that these numbers grow when the population of your empire grows, and this worked well when I tried Austria, Russia and Turkey before that.

But with Portugal, I am still hooked with 20k/10k, and this while my empire has rises so much.
I annected the Aztecs, the Inka and Mysore, thus adding hundred of thousand people to my population. But still, recruiting pool is 20k/10k.
This is around 1540 now, and well it is getting hard to defend all these posessions against the sail-ho incoming SPanish, French, and also the English have already begun to sail around and colonize, and the Dutch will join in, too.
It will be hard to defend my poosessions with 10k soldiers recruitable per year...

So I wonder, don't the people of cities of Aztec and Inka and Mysore origin COUNT to increase my recruiting pool ?
Seems like they don't (
Is this, because they don't believe in God ?
(btw, do then people count who believe in another god than the 'true' god, in this case: christian god - so adding muslim provinces won't help me to increase my recruiting pool, too ?)

I wonder if this is a bug, or if it is designed this way. Please let me know if you got an idea how the recruiting pool is calculated (max.soldier storage and yearly number of soldiers added to the pool)

I hope I don't have to go for christian provinces to increase my recruiting pool. Not so easy for portugal... perhaps Italy, hm... but anyway, this is hard.
btw, I already grew myself 2 provinces of 700+ people cities, AND I converted thousands of Incas to Catholicism (YES!!) - but this doesn't seem to help anyway

And what about the famous Gurkhas in India ?

:eek:/

thanx a lot for any good information

I dont have the game.
What I believe to have figured out from a scottish AAR is that your recruitment pool is only from your home provinces. So those three provinces of portugal are the only places where the recruitment pool numbers come from.

Check the manpower value of your newly conquered provinces.
If you added provinces with manpower values >0 and still have the same pool, there is a problem

I think there could be a bug involved. I made the same experience with Portugal as Vienna did. I virtually conquered the whole world (... just testing powermongering, mind You... ;)) without my recruitment pool ever rising. Especially nothing happened when having conquered India. On the other hand, when I conquered India while playing Sibir, my recruitment pool rose skyhigh...

Noticed this now as well. Just as portugal, as sweden it wasn´t a problem. I have tons of money but no soldiers to recruit :(

Well then, seems to be a bug (?)
or something which can be changed in the game settings (???)

As it seems, many countries have been tried and really had a rising recruiting pool when conquering new provinces - Sibir, Sweden... I also tried myself with Austria and Turkey, no problem there.

Only weith Portugal, there's something wrong in this point. Number of solders growing into the pool is always 10k, and the pool's maximum is always 20k.

Heck. Will this be changed one day ?

You only get manpower from provinces on the same continent as your capital.

Thanks Johan now I see
that's why conquering Maroc in the meanwhile didn't give me any rise in recruitings, too..
so I really have to go for Italy or so, whew..

I think this solution (same continent) makes some sense, but wouldn't it make more sense if it was put the way 'only peole in your empire having the SAME RELIGION' are counted to calculate your soldier and recruiting pool (!?)

Still, this would not give you the famous Gurkha soldiers from India, because you can't convert them big Indian provinces to catholicism, but it would make sense at least to convert some American provinces or Muslim (just like some Marocs for instance *g*)

Well, anyway, I can live with this (for the moment *hehe*)

Thanx,

Vienna

Carlos.
The recruiting pool affects the yearly and maximum number of soldiers (army/cav/art) that one can recruit. Not the number of settlers one get.

So, The Ottoman Empire only get soldiers from Europe although they very often expand south into Arabia and North Africa, who shares both their religion (Sunni and Shiah Muslims) and in most cases their language? That sounds a bit unfair. That will force the Ottomans to expand into Europe in the beginning in order to have a decent recruiting pool.

Johan... this SHOULD be changed... you should be able to recruit from foreign provinces taht either share your state religion or that have been occupied for more than X years...

Sounds like a good idea to me, otherwise you get those weird results for Portugal, and could get similar ones for England and other small countries that had huge conscriptions from local populations.

I'm unfortunately unsure of this, but didn't most of the large colonial powers first start any serious recruiting at a lot later date than the games period ? Of course you did have the local militia, but that should be represented in the governour or similar ?
