I just thought it would be neat to assassinate other countries heirs and rulers for the purpose of claiming throne or destabilization. This would be interesting to see how your rivals would react , maybe add an efficiency to it and calculate it with stability and rulers traits and unrest. I think it would add a nice twist for multiplayer along with rivalry. Thanks for reading - Gabe

The actual heads of state trying to get another nation's ruler assassinated never really happened that much, besides maybe in the Italian city-states. It was mostly assassins from their own country killing their own rulers afaik.

I guess but it would still be interesting. since pretty sure though most dlc specific affected nations also have a somewhat impact on the rest. One example would be rights of man in prussia with the ruler traits. fair point though.

They tried a feature along these lines.

The player base pretty much exploded.

They took it out.

It was just when they released Nare Nostrum...
Originally they had an event which could trigger when you had 100 spy network in another nation, it was semi-rare and if it happened you could choose between killing the enemy Monarch or not do anything...
There wasn't any risk of failure from what I'm aware of.

There also used to be a random event for Japanese daimyos where your ruler would just randomly straight-up die: according to the flavor text, via assassins, but it had nothing to do with any other country, it was just a random event. It was...frustrating, to say the least. Paradox removed it a few patches ago.

I'd love to see a feature like this added, yeah. Possibly under the 'support rebels' subsection, and with a low chance of success, dependant on said rebel factions current level of unrest, and progress towards rising up.

Assassinations didn't happen a lot later in history, but they did happen, though mostly claimed to be performed by rebels. (I'm sure there's some speculation to be had about government involvement, but i'm not a conspiracy theorist).

It's one of those things that sounds pretty neat but in practice, it's infuriating. This will not likely see the light of day in EU4.

Yeah, in hindsight, it would be rather infuriating. (Though the frustration would be dampened a bit by slaughtering those godly rival rulers)

Assassination in current espionage mechanics would be terrible. Anyway, whole espionage mechanics now is pretty unfun and only annoying.

Please take a look at my vision of espionage in EU4 in spare time. Right now espionage is just eh. Because of this mechanics player's nation in mid-late game always has like 3 spy networks at 100% and permanent sow discontent, sabotage recruitment, slander merchants etc. It's just always on. It's unfun and stupid, there should be ways to prevent it, and small, poor countries should not even be able to infiltrate huge empires like Russia or Ottomans, because they can't even afford that. Espionage should be expensive, but strong. Just like keeping large army - large army is strong, but expensive. Espionage should provide strong "sniping" possibilities.
