Adding police brigade to militia

I am attempting to modify militia units so they can have police brigades. I changed the unit text thusly:
from
#allowed_brigades = police
to
allowed_brigades = police
Now I see the check boxes but I cant add any brigades to militia at all.
What have I missed?

I believe it's hardcoded that militia divisions cannot have attached brigades.

If you've changed the file then you should be able to produce the police brigade(s) seperately and attach them to the militia on the map.

As Alufdufe says, it's hardcoded that you can't build militia with any brigades attached.

This is to prevent the exploit of attaching brigades with longer build times than the militia to get those brigades quicker

I've never wanted to brigade my militia, so of course it didn't occur to me you could build them separately.

I didn't bother either, but the CORE mod changes militia into 'Reserve' divisions, which are decent combat units.

They still have the same build restrictions as militia, though, so adding brigades later became second nature

Ah, so simple. The reason was to attach police brigades to militia for the US occupation of Japan, and German occupation of wherever, instead of using infantry in backwater areas. As the US , of course, I can waste as much as I want for the most part.

I can see where this could work for the US. But for the Germans I should think you'd want to use GAR+POL to get all the suppression value you can.
