I've just noticed I received my first admiral now that has a siege value ?? And I checked the leaders list for england and it seems they've got privateers too with siege values. Now if I remember correctly a leader with siege value of 2 is really really good. So the question is how do I make use of him on land when it seems to me he is only a admiral ? Someone please help, after all I've got some lands to conquer :)

I rechecked and it seems Hawkins is a privateer not an admiral actually, what is the difference between a privateer and a normal admiral on the sea ?

Once upon a time... a feature called 'privateers' was planned...
This is a legacy of it. I think that the 'siege value' was some sort of privateering efficiency, but I don't know.

Thanks a lot Greven...
I was getting curious because in the boardgame they can attack enemy fleets without having to declare war, which was pretty cool. Too bad they are in effect only admirals of differing quality :( Oh well England will survive.

The above only applied to (some) English privateer's.
Genarally privateers where player sponsored & controlled pirates that could attack trading fleets (also not present in the comp game) and attack costal provinces of MP (very much like pirates) which where at war with the controlling player.

I guess the decision to place tradecenters on land pretty much eliminated the usefullness of privateers and where thus removed.

Hi All,
I was wondering about pirates in EU. As I recall they had a huge impact on the period. Whitness the english effort to fight a covert war against spain with them and the end results of this effort. I am actually quite disappointed that the 'trading fleets' were not included and in compliment the pirates or privateers. I have played a number of games like SPI's Conquestador many years ago and you had the ability to interdict the wealth coming in via trade/fleets etc. For EU to omit this is a huge ommision, as I recall the wealth of the plunder taken by english privateers convinced Elizabeth I to stand up to spain, and probably funded the english fleet expansion. I think you need to seriously consider introducing this into the game. The trading fleets represent the achilles heel of any nation that attempts to colonize and conquer far flung areas of the globe. Since I have the german copy I am not aware of the blockade features nuances since I cant read german :D does this attempt to compensate for the ommision of the trading fleets and privateers? By allowing a player to effect blockades to strangle the imports of a nation? Please explain staff as you are able. I do however again say reinstitute the privateer/trading fleet feature, PLEASE!

As pirates in an area are said to reduce the money you get from provinces, it would seem possible that the same could be done with the fleets of nations in the game. Some % of the lost revenue to the owning nation could go to the nation with the fleet and some % would just be lost (sunk during battles, etc.). Maybe in the version 1.1 patch? :)
