I have read the guide for port forwarding and making multiplayer work. So I should set up a static ip address.

Does it really change anything in practice or are there some possible negative side effects in that?

EDIT: For example I have a laptop with a wireless internet connection. If I change it's ip address to static, can I still then connect to networks other than my home network?

And btw, should this be in the Tech forum?
