So I just watched the video about Q&A (I recommend everyone to watch it as it's really interesting and they talk about features we didn't know until now) and one of the developers confirmed the map of Africa will be expanded as well. In the comment section of Youtube they say the east coast will go down to Zanzibar, so I guess this will help to make Indonesia less distorted to fit in the current map.

Considering that Zanzibar was part of the maritime silk road, and that it's at the same latitude as Indonesia (which will be part of SEA), it would've been strange to not have at least the a few playable coastal cities there. Leaving it empty would've looked very strange on the final map I assume.

I think the expansion of the map here is largely in consequence of the longitude of southern Indonesia, which seems to be being overlooked so far on this thread. I don’t think it has any consideration to future or present content in Africa.

Probably, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Swahili city-states get content with republics.

I think it's also worth mentioning that in 1178 the ruler of Kilwa was Suleiman ibn al-Hassan ibn Dawud, noted as being one of the greatest of the Kilwa sultans due to conquering much of the Swahili Coast (including some inland portions) and turning Kilwa into a metropolis!

Ali ibn Dawud was the Sultan of Kilwa in 1066. From what I could find, he ruled for 60 years and his reign "led to a golden age of development."
