A post-apocalyptic mod for Crusader Kings: Deus Vult

What will this mod be about?

Oh, the usual. Humanity decided to have world war, in which there was a lovely nuclear exchange and effectively took humanity back to the stone age. The few who survived went underground for a century, but has now crawled out of their holes. A more detailed story will be provided later on, but only a few million Europeans have survived the nuclear holocaust.

How will you be able to convert CK into a post apocalyptic game?

I have a lot of ideas, but I will just write down the basic

Religion -> Ideology --- The main groups will be anarchist (pagan), democratic (catholic) and tyrannical (orthodox)
Piety -> Dedication to ideologies
The pope -> EU remnants, the red cross and nationalistic organisations
Social classes -> Wastelanders (borrowed from fallout), Citydwellers (small settlements), nationalists (people who want to rebuild old nations) and rich people (think Tenpenny from F3)
Culture -> Language
Prestige will represent person's popularity
Dynasties will be factions or clans
Loaners -> slave traders

Counties -> ???
Duchies -> will most likely be removed, the game needs to be difficult
Kingdoms -> nations

Progress

Music -> Done

I'm almost finished the political map. I've removed all duchies and kingdoms in the game except for the EU (papal states). The hardest work will come later with all those GFX files, like portraits, interface etc.

How can I help?
On top of my head: Give me a list of names in that can be found in your "culture" and good ideas

Will be updated later. Just want to know what people think first.

No interest what's so ever? :confused: Fine, I'll keep the progress to myself and write an AAR when I'm done.

I admire your effort and wish you good luck with your mod. It is my experience with modding, that you can best do it on your own first.

And once after you have made something that works and let people download and play it, then you will get more responses and suggestions or even offers of help.

Just a few thoughts:

* Don't forget that there's also the little used Jewish faith for your edits
* I'm not sure how you're going to get around the feudal structure - it's hardwired that even if you make republics playable by starting from an edited saved game, they won't be around the first time the player saves and reloads. Also, the game will end each time a non-dynast ends up as the heir.

But then, having a "democratic" group that operates under monarchies just won't work.
* Is Rome hardwired? If not, you could just edit appearances so the EU ends up back in Belgium where it belongs.

All in all, I haven't played the Rome game yet - Gamersgate is hard to deal with from China - but it seems like that might be a better fit than Crusader Kings for what you're talking about. It's hard to see just how the crusades or tender feelings about Rome really fit in the world you're talking about. It's even harder to understand why anyone after a nuclear war would be at all interested in listening to or preserving the EU bureaucrats. It seems much more likely people would experience a resurgence of religion and personal, non-political belief - but then the "only around to be conquered" position of the Islamic and Jewish faiths would become much more problematic now that you're setting it in the current day.

All in all, yeah, maybe you could do this - with the right events or mindset, - but right now the most compelling part just seems rewriting all the dynasties and people to be our current aristocrats instead of the old ones. Wiki has lists of important families and names in different languages if you're looking for those. Sometimes they'll be called different things, but you can try just listing names you already know into the search feature or using google with a "site:http://en.wikipedia.org" added.

I don't have modding experience so I won't be any help, but as a Fallout fan (haven't played three yet - I probably will, but I haven't gotten over how it looks like it lost too much of the character from the first two) I would definately give it a try if you can get it to work and at least give feedback.
