Summary

Age of Wonders 4, constantly out of sync

Description

Hi,

Me and my friend each own a copy of AOW4, me on Epic games and my friend on Steam. Since launch we have have both been unable to play the game multiplayer which was the sole reason for us to purchase this game, the issue is that we are receiving the "out of sync" pop up message for every game that we start, just after a couple of turns. The message occurs multiple times each turn which makes the game unplayable. I have been in contact with your support for almost three weeks now but they were unable to help.

What we have one to try and resolve the issue so far

1. Tried various workarounds we could find
Pressing the re-sync button multiple times
Trying out various game & server configurations
Verifying game files
Hosting from Steam
Hosting from Epic
Installing the Beta/Hotfix branch on steam (resulted in version mismatch since I am unable to install it on Epic as far as I know.)
2. Re-installed both games
3. Updated every driver we could think of (Windows, Nvidia, Chipset etc..)
4. Checked our internet connectivity (we have no issues in any other game)
5. Tried to host a new session around 10 times but the issue persist

Steps to reproduce

1. Start the Epic version of the game on one computer
2. Start the Steam version of the game
3. Host a new multiplayer game on either game version (steam/epic)
4. Join that game session with the other game version (steam/epic)
5. Use the standard game settings (changes doesn't seem to matter)
6. Start the session
7. Play for a couple of rounds

Result: After a couple of rounds (or 2 - 4) the out of sync message starts to occur, if you re-sync it will pop up again during the same session and keep on doing so. If you exit the session, go to "Settings" and re-sync the entire session, the out of sync issue will still occur once you get back into the game, or after a single round. The out of sync message can occur either in combat or when you're on the world map.

Let me know if you need any further information.

After some further investigation we found that the issue only seems to occur when you add AI/bots to your session. We didn't do any extensive testing, but it seems plausible. The out of sync issue seems to occur faster the more bots/AI you add, when we added 8 bots we got the out of sync message on round 2 and when we added a single bot we got the error on round 17.

This is what we did, (you can find an example of the session/game settings we used to be able to reproduce the issue.)

Test 1: Created a session with 8 bots (used the same settings as the screenshot)
Result: The out of sync message occurred on round 2 or round 3

Test 2: Created a session without any bots (used the same settings as the screenshot)
Result: The out of sync message didn't occur for the 25 rounds we played.

Test 3: Created a session with a single bot (used the same settings as the screenshot)
Result: The out of sync message occurred on round 17.

We also tried all of these with and without custom rulers but we got the pretty much the same results, the only difference was that it differed with a round or two.

We reproduced the issue to gather some logs for you, maybe that will help you finding the root cause of the issue. We copied the log file each time the out of sync message appeared, the third file should include the entire log.

Here is a step by step explonation of what we did to reproduce the issue
  1. I hosted a new session using my Epic games copy of the game
  2. I used the standard settings, the only tweak that I did was to add 9 players, of which 7 are Normal - AI's
  3. My friend join the session
  4. We both picked standard rulers
  5. We started the session
Result: After a few of turns the out of sync message appeared for the first time (See log: "First out of sync - [Epic/Steam]")
  6. We both clicked the Reload button
    Result: The session was reloaded
  7. He moved his character
  8. On my screen an AI conversation appeared and before I was able to select any option a second out of sync message appeared for us both (See log: "Second out of sync - [Epic/Steam]")
  9. We then both exited the session instead of clicking the reload button
  10. I went into session settings and pressed the "Revert" button
  11. We both joined the session once again
Result: Before we were able to click the next turn button a third out of sync message appeared (See log: "Third out of sync - [Epic/Steam]")
I hope this helps.

Hi Flandersqq, sorry for the long waiting! We fixed a lot of 'Out of Sync' errors for tomorrows Wyvern update, which will hopefully fix the game for the two of you. Please try again after the update and let us know if the issue persists.

Sadly, the issue remain. Seemingly no difference after and before the new update. Is there any way we could revive a refund? We bought this game with the intention to play together like most of your other games, but unfortunately we are unable to do so and have been for quite some time now.

I can at least corroborate the above, tried the game when it first came out, me and my friend were excited to play, seems like a great game. Desyncs made it nearly impossible to play so we waited. Dragon patch said most were fixed so we tried tonight to see how it ran now, made it to turn 16 before dysncs started then every two/three turns from then on.

Me and my friend are also getting this issue, and somtimes it desync so hard that one of us is simply unable to give their units orders, you just can't do anything with your turn, and I have to revert the round, but then the problem happens again 100% of the time and exactly the same point, so I have to revert the session, have my friend NOT join, I take my turn and end turn, then leave, then they join and take their turn and end turn, then I can join and it 'fixes' and we can continue, but again, with lots of desyncs.

He is on Steam and I'm on GOG, im wondering if this could be a cross-platform issue?

oh, I should add that atm we are using a workaround where basicly we both stream the game to each other over discord, I join, take my turn, end and then dissconnect, then he does the same. By only having one of us connected at a time it never desyncs, though this does of course slow things down a bit with the extra loading (though its still faster than dealing with the desyncs!) so the others in this thread could try this

Game updated today, actually getting more out of syncs than I have ever before like every 2 or 3 turns then you'll load sometimes and can't move skip your turn or anything. Had to actually delete a session that we were almost 100 turns into cause we physically couldn't play, and constantly reverting and losing like 3 turns and resetting literally doing everything.Me and my buddy just wanna enjoy the game we love it

OBSERVE MANUAL COMBAT to NEVER

This helps but doesn't entirely remove the issue, more to the point, not observing combat in multiplayer is boring, having to wait 10-15 minutes without being able to do anything whilst your friend finishes a combat? Even longer late game where combat gets more involved. Even if it did work 100% of the time I wouldn't call it a practical solution any more than the 'take your turn, log out, friend takes their turn, logs out' solution

Not sure if you are doing exclusively simultaneous turns or classic turns, but so far have had better luck in general with classic turns and async gameplay. Anecdotally me and my friend have been doing a lot of multiplayer on steam and haven't seen many desync issues, though we tend to not have too many AI rulers. Most reliable desync happens for us when someone is in combat and someone else joins mid-combat.
