I have the following problem:

95% of the time the AI won't accept peace with me, even if I control their capital. I have something like 4 - 5 stars, and am asking for 1 province, AI says no, but a few months later (no progress in the war) the AI offers me 3 provinces to end the war.

OK, so many of you won't think of that as a problem... but the AI never accepts a white peace, if I suggest it. Even if it is beaten.

The only way I seem to be able to get a peace is by giving the AI money...

It is very irritating to have to wait for the AI to offer you peace on it's terms, ie. provinces it is willing to offer you. Often this means that I can't win a quick decicive war, before others declare war on me...

Anyone have suggestions?

Ok... But it still seems a bit funny that the computer usually turns down a rational peace offer, only to present a desperate peace offer a few months later...

It's better to wait for the computer to offer peace if you're winning... It'll always give you more than you could have gotten with the four stars rule... Or so it seems to me. Maybe my computer just hates me, and won't accept anything I offer =)

Well, the rulers probably believe that they might still turn the tides of war to their favour. Why should they accept an offer from a lowly maggot as you =).
Once you come knocking on their door, after conquering their capital, they usually wise up.

Was playing as Flanders last night. One province minor. Somehow thru a series of alliances and separate peaces I ended up fighting Spain alone. Fine. I had a huge army in Flandres with Very Strong morale. With a regularity u could time ur eggcookery on, Spain landed troops in Flandres only to be torn apart every time. After every such 10 battles I got a star. Not a hair on my head even contemplating invading Spain. So this goes on for years and years. Spain not listening to offers and Spain not even offering peace themself. I also was at war with Genua (former Spanish ally). They just did shit all like me but asked for 250 ducats every month. This went on and on for years. I had 3 stars on Spain by now. Not a chance of getting even a statusquo peace.

Holland formed and I switched sides to play with them. Within 2 days of switching Genua had signed a white peace with Flanders and Spain had coughed up 250 ducats to Flanders ...

While we're at it :

Was fighting a war in the Low Countries versus the Austrian Habsburgs. I had swept to victory and had some 5 stars or so. I asked for just Hainaut. No chance. Then near immediately after that the AI offered me Hainaut and Zeeland ...

You know sometimes the AI is just stubborn!

You can burn its cities and slaugther its people but it will never give up, at least not for a couple of months :)

Anyway, whats with the insane peace offers the AI sometimes comes up with? No sane person would accept them :)

The AI was made much more stubborn regarding peace offers from the player in the 1.08 patch.
People where complaining that the AI was accepting Wite Peace offers imediately after a DOW if you remember.

There probably should be some more tweaking though, as the discrepancy between your and their own offers are a bit too large right now.

The AI should respond based on circumstances!

I agree, but I think this is a huge understatement. 'Tweaking' this fickle AI isn't enough! I think the first posts by Teri are right on. I've been playing Russia and consistently I'll crush the AI and ask for a province. The AI has almost always declined and then (WITH NO CHANGE IN STATUS) come back a couple months later and offered me the same province. No White Peace offers have ever been made by me (I want what I've conquered!), although the AI has offered White Peace a few times -- then offered me what I originally asked for OR EVEN MORE.

This makes no sense! The AI should respond based on circumstances (not abitrary delays) regardless of which side offers the peace settlement. The circumstances on the battlefield should determine the outcome, not who makes the offer.

IMHO, there is more than 'a bit' of a discrepancy here...

Guess I'll head back to the patch wish list. :)

In my numerous wars against Spain (allied with Hessen a couple of these times), I forgot one time Hessen armies. They invaded me in Palatinate ( an interesting history about this conquest). They beated my 10k armies I kept in Palatinate to stop eventual rebellions. I received a tombstone. They demanded me 250D Never! I answered.

I sent one my 2 good generals especially to crush this threat. I beated them while they were attacking Luxembourg province (what I conquered from Spain :D ) After, by Cologne (controlled by my vassal, Lorraine), I sieged Munster. And I won, controlling the province. I sieged the capital too. But Hessen refused to accept a white peace! It was close to complete defeat and Hessen refused! For sure, I conquered the province. Only after this Hessen accepted a white peace. Annexing Hessen would have been possible, but I did not want to expand to much in german countries. Spain was and remain my target.

The next war, Hessen attacked me again, but I was prepared, I beated them in Munster and they accepted a white peace.
