Right now the AI has no restrictions in where it makes colonies and often makes them in colonial regions already claimed by their allies. I think it would be nice if the AI abided to the Treaty of Tordesillas if the colonial region in question is claimed by their ally with whom they have high trust with. I really hate it when playing as Spain and France with whom I've been allies since the beginning of the game and have 100 trust with suddenly starts making colonies in Mexico or Peru which already belong to me.

Thanks for the idea. Will keep that in mind for next time I work with AI colonization.

Thanks! Also, while we're at Treaty of Tordesillas, can you do something about getting bad relations with pope when you claim a colonial region as one nation and then form another? For example, right now if I claim Brasil as Castile and then form Spain I get relations penalty with pope for "violating the treaty" when I decide to make more colonies in that region even though I shouldn't be because I claimed it in the first place.

That looks in the code like it was fixed about a year ago. If you still have the issue, please report in the bug forum with attached save (preferably right before you switch tags).

Hmm, that would be hard since it was an Ironman game. But I was playing Aragon and after I integrated Castile (got an Iberian Wedding event but since only Castile can form Spain diplomatically I had to integrate them) I decided to form Spain. I had aready had 2 colonial nations in Brasil and Colombia and after forming Spain I started getting relations hit with pope.

I forgot to mention this game was on played on 1.17, my bad. I haven't played any colonial nations since 1.18 and since I haven't seen anything about this issue in 1.18 changelog, I automatically assumed it hasn't been fixed. Once again my bad.

I did have a similar problem (1.18) where I was getting the treaty penalty in the 13 colonies because it was claimed by Norway, except they had died to Sweden and the claim was still there.

If you plan on working with AI colonization could you also work with colonization in general? I mean it could be a bit more historical, meaning that Castille won't go for Canada (I know, right?) and England/GB would go for North America (not Mexico, tough, as they do sometimes) and Portugal should make Brazil a priority. These could be in the form of missions for each nation to target their historical colonies, like there are missions for the Ottomans to go for their historical conquests, which is why you never see the turks in Russia or Ethiopia (they just stop at their maximum historical expansion). These missions could target areas or regions giving them trade power in the specific node or, I don't know, colonization bonuses. It would be awsome for some more historical accuracy in the game!
I should also add that I've seen a suggestion about this a couple of days ago which handle this by making a AI Historical Focus option in the menu. I think this is also a good idea but the missions would grant rewards for human players, also.
