"Vlad, Count of Targoviste, was an interesting man. The young lord never seemed content. He constantly diverted attention from one interest to another, never thought through his schemes. Count Vlad grew weary in the flock, and strayed from the path".

"His Lord, Handsome Kozma, Duke of Mutenia, ruled over five estates in Transylvania. Of these, Count Vlad held two, and Lord Radu held one. A fair but just ruler, Kozma served his liege ably".

"Oh, Petar! Great Petar! Bravely, he fought the infidels, up and down the Balkan Peninsula. Oh, Peter! Great Tsar of Bulgaria. He ruled over the great Doux Kozma".

Akin To The Tsar: An Information Thread

Akin to the Tsar examines the Vlachian Counts, starting with Vlad de Tirgovosite, who ruled in what would become Romania. Vlad began his rule a vassal to Duke Kozma, who in turn was a subject to the Bulgarian Tsar, Petar.

The Vlachian counts, distinct culturally from their Bulgarian overlords, must balance maintaining cultural autonomy and expanding their power within the Tsar's realm.

In it, the work will alternate between historical records and direct accounts, with an emphasis on how the Vlachian House is remembered.

Winter 936

"In the Winter of the year of our Lord, Eight Hundred and Thirty Six, Lord Vlad began to fall out with God. His own mind, the racing paranoia, drove him to madness"…. from A History of Imperium Roma: The Noble Houses, Page 71

...Lord Vlad sat in the middle of the table. His advisors spread equally around him. If one squinted, they would see that proximity related to favor shown...

Lord Vlad sat slumped in the chair.

“Of course, my lord, this is an important decision. Not one that I take lightly”. Grigore, Mayor of Arges, sat to his left. “My Lord, I am a great statesman, and a fine mastery of texts, allow me to help educate your son!” Grigore said.

Tepes looked upset.

“My lord. Grigore is a great mayor, a learned scholar. However, he comes from Campulung. He does not know the people from Targoviste, the family’s home estate.” Grigore stares towards Tepes.

“You well know that I am more qualified, Sir Tepes. Do we not serve the same Liege?” Grigore responded. Tepes was quiet.

“Enough!” Lord Vlad said. “Both of you are worthy tutors. Grigore, you can educate young Timotei”.

“Lord Tepes, you can educate Vintila, who has been set to inherit Targoviste”.

The men in the room argued loudly. However, one man, the ecclesiarch Davide, sat apart. He brushed Vlad upon the upper shoulder, startling him.

“Enough! Your disagreement!” Vlad said. “Now, we must break for dinner! We can continue our dispute tomorrow!” Vlad seemed rather annoyed with the four councilors. But the priest Davide, he held close.

"The Priest Davide, from the County of Taranto, he was a deceitful man. From humble beginnings, Davide schemed to become Ecclesiarch in Targoviste. A man of the cloth, he traded his priestly garb for the sleuth’s robe..."

"...Davide, he spoke on behalf of the wicked Basileus, for the Roman Empire..."

A good start. I like it!

Spring 937

“Late in 937, a bad omen entered Targoviste. Count Vlad became violently ill. In fact, throughout the region, a nasty malady crept, and many fell to the disease.” from A History of Imperium Roma: The Noble Houses, page 82

“Davide, what advice can you offer me"? asks Vlad. He coughs violently, mucus coming from his mouth. Vlad was under the weather.

“Vlad, I don’t think this threatens you. But I recommend you get plenty of bed rest for the time being". Davide said.

“I would hate to pass this young. I do not think God would call for me so early. But with the many deaths in my lands, I have begun to worry". Count Vlad said. “There is much to be done".

“Indeed, my lord. There is". Davide responded. “But now is not that time.”

Vlad.... this has to be interesting

Spring 937

Count Vlad walked up to the chapel door. It was small, but fitting, in Tarogvosite.

“Of the Dukes in the land, few can challenge the mighty Dionisii, of Vidin.” Davide said. “If you are looking for an ally on the council, I recommend him.” Davide continued.

“Yes.” Vlad responded. “Yes, I would like that very much. Has he any issue?”

“He has a son, Grgur, age 10”. Davide confidently assured his liege.

“I’ll send an envoy to put forward a betrothal to my daughter, Monica. And, to convince him, we will have him as company.” Vlad said.

“Yes, m’lord you are wise and virtuous.” Davide responded.

Summer 937

“I’m happy that you could oblige me, Good Dionisii. I am glad you arrived safely at Targoviste”. Lord Vlad remarked.

The servant brought the braised grouse to the table. The two men raised their glasses, full with beer, to the air.

“The Pious Lord Vlad, I’m honored to be your guest. You are a gracious host”. Dionisii toasted Vlad’s overflowing cup.

Summer 937

A violent argument broke out between the two lords after the meal.

“However, sir, I must disagree with you on this matter. Good day. I shall forward the betrothal documents in the mail". Dionisii stormed out.

Vlad put his hands to his head. Sweat fell from his brow.

“I am unable to keep up with his etiquette. He comes from a different culture, and much higher class. I must become more studious”. Vlad shouted in frustration. His fist slammed the table.

Davide, who had been in attendance, comforted his lord.

“There are other battles to be won. There will be other attempts". Davide responded, hoping to console Vlad.

Fall 937

When the news arrived, Lord Vlad was extremely relieved.

Pm6ayu1.png

“We still have the marriage ties with Lord Vidin. With time, the alliance will be salvaged". he remarked to the courier.

Vlad was disappointed, but optimistic about the future. He now set his sights on finding marriages for Vintila and Timotei.

Welcome to AAR writing.

nice... you are securing your position with such a powerful ally

Fall 937

“In the town of Arges, news had reached that the brave Mayor Grigore had passed, troubling the king….” from A History of Imperium Roma: The Noble Houses, page 94

Count Vlad slammed his hand upon his desk. Deeds, letters and blueprints moved in every direction.

“Oh… I hear the news, he is gone! Who shall look after my dear Timotei”? Count Vlad sobbed loudly. “Just yesterday, he was here, but now… my most trusted friend”! Vlad continued.

“Do we let Mayor Tepes care for Timotei? Surely, he would repay the honor at some point…” Vlad said.

The courtier, nearby, left the room. Davide entered. He had been waiting for information.

7LADLRC.png

“My liege! My liege! Oh Vlad, in these dark times, why not keep Timotei safe, in Targoviste”? Davide continued. “Surely, these maladies will tremble at the castle walls”. Davide looked towards Vlad.

“Yes, yes. If things go south, we can always seclude the courtiers on the castle grounds, and keep the disease from spreading. Good work, my Davide”! Vlad felt pride over taking direct control over Timotei’s education. “A marvelous idea! I will arrange it”. Lord Vlad dismissed Davide.

Fall 937

“Increasingly stressed over the illness spreading across his lands, Count Vlad began to mingle with the commoners..."

t57fRtf.png

"...On a dreary winter day, Vlad saw a large commotion, over a man who had gone mad, perched atop a roof. Had he been experiencing the same affliction that the Mayor Grigore had? Curious, Vlad moved towards the man, through the onlookers..."

aPNUJoW.png

"..Vlad saw the same look from the sick man as from his recently deceased, and ill, Grigore the last time they met. He yelled loudly his name, encouraging him to keep living..."

mPK2DFx.png

"...Vlad hurried swiftly up the ladder to the thatched roof. The man tugged at him, cursed, but Vlad stood strong and held him close..."

8np8IkZ.png

"...The two continued to scuffle. Vlad attempted again to prevent the sick man from jumping. A brute, the Count grabbed the man and threw him towards safety. Nearby, alerted guards arrested the man, so he would not hurt himself..."

Gg5cdC2.png

"...For the first time in a while, Vlad felt good about himself, as the stunned crowd looked up at him, like some sort of heavenly angel. And so, the man was saved from certain doom. Later, he became a monk, devoted to the heavenly St. Basil. ” from A History of Imperium Roma: The Noble Houses, Page 96 through Page 98
