When the leader of the defendents in a crusade is deposed by a faction, all allies are immediately kicked out of the crusade's defending side, and the new ruler/leader will have to fight alone.It is possible to join again by offering directly to the new leader of the defense, but AI of course doesn't really do that.
Also, UI is not correct, the crusade icon will still show all allies on the defending side, while the war icon for the new leader will show him to be alone.

No idea if it is the same for the attacking side...
