All of my children get born, then become sickly infants and die on the spot.

It's kinda ruining my game, can someone help me out? Please?

EDIT: Eh, it seems I've been unlucky with my first four children insta-dying, two new children are surviving, so it might not be a bug.

It's something I've noticed, and a friend of mine also told me he was concerned something was off. I noticed that I was having an unusual number of child deaths (unusual for Vanilla). It would be fine if it wasn't because I don't get that many children either. With the medieval European average being something between 5 and 7, I'm getting 3, 4, 5, never more than that and usually less.

So, maybe it is just us, but maybe something was tweaked, or maybe patched Vanilla works that way too.

I kinda have the suspicion that the modding team inserted a random possibility of children dying, and that we've just been very unlucky :D.

It's a sad sight, those 4 counters with skulls, but what can a man do? Only shrug, and produce more offspring.

Keep in mind that while the ancient and medieval world had much less in the way of medicine and had a much higher infant morality rate, they compensated for this by having a lot of children. This is a practice still seen today in many rural and traditional societies. If we're going to call open season on children for diseases, we should up the fertility rate as well.

The problem with this is that it causes filebloat and can lag the game a lot, to have a realistic "Lots of kids, high mortality" setup. I always thought a good compromise was just cutting down on the number of kids.

I agree; it would take less of a toll on the engine and would accomplish the same thing.

But cut down also the rate of dead kids. Infant mortality was around 50% at the XIIIth Century in Spain, for instance, but if that bloats the files, let's just assume that dead kids don't show up and be done with it.

aye, this is an issue I thought I've fixed in the past already, but I probably concluded too hastily
I was planning to do a rebalance of mortality/fertility towards vanilla direction (ie. fewer people, but fewer deaths) some time in the future once I get enough free time to play around (what 1~2 hour free time blocks I have tend to be eaten up by shows I'm watching since playing LI for small chunks at a time is just stressful, since I end up thinking of what to do next for the rest of the day :laugh: )

Is it sic transit gloria mundi poems round yet? (Better than dead kids poetry)

Recuerde el alma dormida,
avive el seso e despierte
contemplando

cómo se passa la vida,
cómo se viene la muerte
tan callando;

cuán presto se va el plazer,
cómo, después de acordado,
da dolor;

cómo, a nuestro parescer,
cualquiere tiempo passado
fue mejor.
