It's not really labour unless its hard and painful. No one understand this more than the men of Welf.

Welf0020.jpg

The House of Welf once ruled from the coast of the North and Baltic Seas to the Alps, and from Westphalia to Pomerania.

Capture1.jpg

By 1337, the rival House of Hohenstaufen succeeded in isolating and eventually depriving the blood rights of the Welf.

Through bitter struggle, all that remained was the Duchy of Brunswich.

Emperor.jpg

We nobles were, by the grace of God, invested with the realm's administration. And over the millennia, the rights were received hereditarily.

As Count of Luneburg, I am bounded by traditional custom fealty to my distant cousin the Duke of Brunswich, who's in turn bounded by feudal contract homage to the Holy Roman Emperor, Ludwig von Wittelsbach.

ChMar.jpg

Marriage therefore, were of foremost importance; wooing is a public affair, done in public and only with the patriarch's approval.

Their products are then categorically divided; clearly and discretely, either advantages or disadvantages, just like boys and like girls.

Looks, health and fertility are the only traits that pass on genetically.

DMar.jpg

By standards, he's pretty hot. Even my chaste daughter could not resist.

29 February, 1337

"NO pa pa! Don't listen to him!" weeping loudly, "He has long desired to succeed you, and knows well my marriage would jeopardise his dream. Don't father, please, dont listen to him... oh how wicked he is! Having damned me for a decade in the monkery and nunnery, he now argues the continuance of my eternal solitude and suffering in this hell." *tears streaming, eyes glowing ~ ah! It aches remembering his daughter this way. Even in his favourite garden, the cool of night could not lift the weight in his heart. The morning's event shattered him terribly.

"I see you have agreed to Elisabeth's fancy, brother."
"Against your better advice... am weak with her. Wilhelm, forgive me-"
"No need Otto, we brothers know each other's hearts. As for Liz, I dont understand. There's no advantage in that marriage"
"I don't either Wil, and was unexpecting of my daughter's behaviour. But seeing her on the edge of eloping, what could I do?"
"In our age, we were never so impulsive... I don't know... perhaps we have lost our touch with time."
"Passion burns to the test of times. We aren't so young anymore, and have seen a lot. The bonds we share as brothers I believe are the purest of love."
"Yes, it lives outside the touch of time"
Indeed, Otto's greatest joy came from that shared feeling between his brothers, "Wilhelm, I've been meaning to apologise for my daughter's insults. She has tainted your honour and I am grieved with guilt. More so because I saw... truths behind her sentiments. Should we part from our semisalic traditions?"
"Nay brother, our grandfather was explicit in this. It is doctrine. And among us brothers, we have no sons, plus I love Liz just as much as you do brother; but speaking of insults, have you heard of our cousin - our Duke of Brunswich's latest slight against our grandfather?"
"Again!?"
"This time it's more grave. He's circulating allegations that our grandfather was illegitimate. Hence he removed us from THEIR family inheritance and are now preparing claims against OUR inheritance. Baldness doesn't run in the family he says."
"That hypocrite of a fickhead just wastes his time. After ten years he is still 5th in line to the imperial throne. And I doubt taking our 1.2 base gold estate, which is obligated to him anyway, would advance his cause. Moreover, he is still without wife."
"A virgin still."
"Indeed"
"We could gossip that wives don't run in our family."
"Determined as I am to keep Luneburg from that fickhead, I still holds dear in my heart, dreams of restored glory to our House. So no matter what they do, tainting the family name just won't do."
It was a clear night, serene and surreal. The brothers, in the spirit of camaraderie, recollected their pasts, reaffirming to each other their gratitude and pride, their meaning of being Welf.

HenrytheLion.jpg

The greatest member de the House de Welf, was my great five times great grand pa-pa. He himself brought Welf to the its greatest height.

In 1180, he was unfairly and unlawfully branded traitor in-absentia. For this exact injustice it is against the Welf family to talk about other people behind their backs. This is at least true to the Johann-Welf line.

JohannWelf.jpg

Ho! The man who started it all! The grand patriarch of our family line!

During his life time, our hated rival the House of Hohenstaufen died out. He is credited for 'overlooking' that.

AlbrechtWelf.jpg

This is the founder of the fickhead's line. Look at his puny martial stats, Johann is so so better than him.

His lifetime left a dark chapter in the House. He assassinated his father before he could change inheritance laws to consanguinity. Consanguintity means blood. CK somehow extended this to mean 'power'. As martial stats would determine power, Johann should have rightfully inherited. The turmoil of the period was saved only by Johann's thirst of justice, fairness and his great magnanimity.

OttoWelfPro.jpg

And as you can see, all of the fickhead's heir have thick-head hair.

46 years and still a virgin. Chastity he claims, then so is my daughter. He needs someone like Moritz.

And so the leet year ends.

ElisabethWelf.jpg

Troubles is imminent as the family begins reconcile over their respective rights and interests. Stay tuned as after this juncture comes a tempestuous time.

This sure is an interesting start. It begun dramatically, and ended Knýtling-like.

You've just earned a follower. ;)

Intro

Hey guys! Thanks for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it.

As an AAR virgin, I am honoured to share the same feelings with the many people before me. It's always good to know that you're a part of something, a tradition of sorts.

For how the AAR will be conducted: it's essentially a narrative. The picturing and captioning are for fast story telling, to cover the boring parts of the year. This will start off akin to a tutorial AAR, since I am new, and this gives substance to write.

Game mode; Very Hard, Normal Aggressiveness, Below Average Speed.
No Salic Laws. Accept all marriages.
One AAR per game year.
Don't have power bases in Italy, Lowlands, etc - game sucks with them, too easy, impossible to lose.
No cheats.

You've just earned an inofficial award for awesomest intro-post. This's got potential! :D Now throw us another update. ;)

I thought I was being stalked! It just weirded me out to see somebody with just a post or two call me out, and it made me think you were some old-timer in disguise. As it's been made clear that I was totally mistaken and wrong, I will say instead that your name is like some sort of anime space ship and I will be reading this.

Moxie is spunk.

I like the title of this AAR :D

And I like it that you start out in the HRE, pretty close to the place where my family is from. If you conquer Osnabrück, be nice to the city ;)

And also I am really interested in seeing how a 1337 AAR plays. Go Welf!!!

Death is a debt no Welf can ever buy out

It's not really labour unless its hard and painful. No one understand this more than the men of Welf. Still,

Welf20002.jpg

Lizzy wrote in January, to tell me she understand.
I replied in February, 'Your baby's not Welf!'
She insisted in March, that he's man of 'a Welf'.
So concede I did in April, but still 'I understand more.'

liz.jpg

How more can she get

So she told me in May, she will try again.
Which spelled in June, for me midlife crisis til when-

heritfear.jpg

Knowing that I still have the power to father sons relieved me. But I couldn't kill my wife, a 400 ducat blowjob is just too dear.

I'll leave the matter to my spymaster...

26 June, 1338

Built by the Billung family in the tenth century, Luneburg castle was built defensively, on the hills of Kalkberg. The hill gave it protection, but also meant less room. Even when passed onto Henry the Lion, he too was frustrated by the difficulties the hill cause to expand. Ludolf, in particular, HATE this natural feature. Along with all other, and anything natural that hinders expansion.

ludolf-before.jpg

Not every bastard was born of love

Indeed, space in the castle was hard to come by. Yet here he was, in a room with so much of that luxury, a secret chamber no less!
"Madame Steward Raymonde, welcome. I heard of your commitment to us."
"Committed to my husband," she corrected, "though I am surprise you are our leader." It was faint, but her tone was clearly marked with disgust. Ludolf was accustomed to this however, every conspirator before her said the same thing.
"Nay madame, it is not convenient for our leader to show himself. I have been entrusted to act in his capacity however. And quite right, our goal currently coincides with your husband's sake. We are to assassinate Elisabeth and her son, Georg von Oldenburg."

raymond-chat.jpg

Raymonde was not naive. Assassination meant money, which meant her an active role. Were it discovered, she would become implicated in this conspiracy. Not to mention that it is unjust.

matilde.jpg

Noticing the silence, Matilde blunted. "My brother has long served with faith. It would be wrong after all these years for the inheritance to slip away from him, especially to a non-Welf." There, that should convince her. She was the leader of the Hansa faction after all. Her word carried weight.

elen-spy.jpg

Though Matilde's argument was already apparent with everyone, Elena suspected that Raymonde was moved with mention of 'inheritance'.
"Assassination is risky. But the Count himself have just delegated things to me, for now. So I can send out the best people, for now. No one else would know. That is why we need your help now Raymonde. This opportunity is too precious to miss."

With deliberation, Raymonde resolved, "You're right Matilde, my husband deserves some justice, however killing Elisabeth would be too unjust. Moreover, it would cost too much money... but George, for him I might happily squander some ducats."
"Then it's agreed. I gladly welcome you again madame Steward Raymonde, and hereby declare you fellow Purist." Ludolf smiled to Raymonde's admissions. Soon he mused, he would get off this hill.

assa-george1.jpg

Otto was shocked to learn his wife still lived. So where did all those spies go? Oh.

He quickly sent his heralds to Oldenburg to explain.

assa-george1result.jpg

Too late.

NO! My daughter... no!

17 July, 1338

"Georg must die Elena."
"We don't have enough money, dear. And Raymonde is too alarmed to get us more." she too was startled from the botched assassination. Never has she seen Otto in such a terrible fit of rage.
"Our leader has provided us with ten ducats this time."
"How..? Could he get so much money? Who-"
"You know I can't tell you. Don't fail this time honey."
Left alone by her husband, Elena tried to self-contain her hysteria. She was so sure of everything. Yet how did they know, what evidence was left behind? Calm, she told herself. She exceled in espionage, that she knew.

With ten ducats, along with her best agents, she personally lead her entourage toward Oldenburg. This time around, she would do her job completely, and destroy whatever evidence she can find too.

assa-george2.jpg

I suspect my Spymaster of hiding something. What? Elena left with the guards? Then who is-

4 August, 1338 - Annointment of Wilhelm Welf, Count of Luneburg

Luneburg Huge Cathedral

There are no greater love than bonds shared between brothers. It's a sacred gift, given by He. Yet Oldenburg dared snatch it away!

For the slandar to fair Luneburg; for the murder of our daughter and our brother; for wrongs forced onto the House of Welf; I promise vengeance to our enemy. Lex talionis!

"Lex talionis! Lex talionis! Lex talionis!" crowds chanted

I solemnly swear, I will avenge the memories of Otto.

hunting.jpg

My cousin wished to hunt with me, but

I solemnly swear, I will stand by Otto's ideals and restore the honour of the Johann family line.

Welf2017.jpg

I solemnly swear, I will exact revenge on whoever smeared my horse with pig fat and released elephants into the woods.

And so as the 1338 year ends, Wilhelm pays his first price for stubbornly adhering to his late brother's will.

And most definitely this won't be his last.

Pfuu, assassinations sure create more problems than they solve.

Other than that, I decided to coin the term 'Phargle-d' into a verb; meaning, "to motivate to write an AAR". It's a just a special tribute really. Though you appear thrown off...

Anyhow, what 'moxie'? I'm Australian and scoured to no avail my entire library shelf for that word. Made in the USA?

Great start to an AAR!

I just got CK/DV and haven't really jumped in yet, being more of an EU3 player myself. It looks fascinating though - I like the way you tell the story of the family. Assassination looks like fun, if not expensive and dangerous.

By the way, regarding moxie...

I don't think this is odd, but something else.

In some way I could say your writing is brilliant.
Yet a bit odd, but brilliant. :p

I am not good with criticism.
I just read aars, post something, and the writer knows that someone is reading his aar.

Interesting AAR, despite the cost of the assasinations there wasn't really other alternatives.
