I was attacked as Austria from Venice and an Arab nation recently. I had an alliance with Hungary and a couple of smaller nations. They just completely ignored my plight! How can I get them to come to my aid?

Despite my alliance I only had a relations value of about +35 with Hungary, does this affect it? Nonetheless I would be penalised if I didn't join my allies in a war.

What gives?

Newbie I know, but a hooked newbie.

When allies decide whether they will come to your aid or not, they consider the relationship they have with you and with your attacker(s).

In your case I guess they just decided that they liked the aggressors more than they did you. :)

If you want to maintain the alliance, you will have to propose it again. But don't expect the allies to join in on an ongoing war. They won't.

+35 is awfully low for an ally, that makes them technically only neutral. I try and keep my allies well over +100 (takes some cash to do sometimes, or a stray relative gettied married). I always keep a royal marriage in effect when I have an ally. I very rarely have allies not come to my aid.

Also, if you have an alliance you want to keep start a war with some helpless nation and quikcly sign a white peace- it will keep the alliance going.

You have to call for your allies aid. Set this message box option to pop up and pause or look for a small tab in the right hand part of the screen. I recommend beginners spend time looking through all the message box options and upping the notification level of many of them. Lots of key events are just too easy to miss on the default settings.

I was also wondering.... How does one get an ally to come to your aid? Or more specifically, I was playing Sweden and currently at war with Russia. I entered into an alliance with Turkey hoping they would enter into the fray with Russia. They never attacked. How do you ask an ally to attack one of your enemies?

Thanks!

Like Grumbold said, in the upper right hand corner you will geta tiny box when you declare war. You have to click on those boxes and tell the game to call your allies to your aid. It isn't done automatically. I don't think this is documented anywhere but this is also the mechanism you will get royal marriage proposals and peace treaties sent to you as well.

My suggestion: when you issue a DoW as soon as you do hit Pause Break. You should then be able to see the box and call your allies- it also helps you slow the time down and start your srmies rolling.
