The Empire, while strong on the surface, internally was a major issue to the Kaiser and his government. At the time, the Commune of France was the Empires most dangerous threat; revanchist syndicates threatened Germany’s security with violent revolution and worse. The German Armed Forces maintained a large movement of troops along the French border. The Reichsheer demanded to the Reichstag that the army must be reequipped and upgraded to gain the tactical and strategic advantage against the Syndicates. The Reichsheer also demanded that the “Siegfried Line” be updated to impede any aggression against France; however the Reichstag would not approve funding of the project because of other devotions of Imperial revenue.
Besides the issue of the French Syndicates, another important debate at this time was the expansion of the Kaiserliche Marine. In 1936, the German Navy was the largest in the world with bases around the globe and large fleet of ships. The debate raged in the Reichstag amongst the politicians and leaders in the military. The Kaiser personally announced to the politicians, “I would rather see a German ship on my horizon that rather seeing a French ship ever!” Most Generals advocated for continuation of the Naval Construction program started in 1934. Politicians on the other hand demanded that this program was unnecessary because of the large fleet that the Kaiserliche Marine already possessed and too many resources could be better used elsewhere to fix the slowing German Economy. The debate led nowhere until the issue was dropped on the Kaiser’s front desk.
The Kaiser signed his signature to approve the continuation of the naval construction program. The Kaiser stated that the need to have the military advantage was crucial to keeping the Commune of France at bay.
The Kaiser knew also to maintain his empire, the youth must be educated to have good jobs and be willing to support the empire. He took great interest in “Verein für Schulereform” by addressing it to his people and scholars by advocating that the teachers should be teaching the roots of German culture by making advances in literature, music, art, and science. The public received the Kaiser’s message well and some political parties in the Reichstag made gains from the Kaisers address on education.
On February 3rd, 1936 the Berlin Stock Market crashed. The failing economy took a nosedive, 15% of total industrial output in Germany was lost and millions of people lost their savings and livelihoods overnight. Many nations that invested in the Stock Exchange suffered greatly as well from the Mitteleuropa nations, Austria, Kingdom of Spain, Denmark, La Plata, Brazil, Qing Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
The „Auswärtiges Amt“ (Foreign Ministry) have been listening intently in world events in their embassies around the world. In Canada, the King had died and was succeded by Prince Edward. In his radio address and cornation he proclaimed that Candians will work together to beat the Union of Britain by listening to the Elected Privy Councilors.
In Russia, the leader Kerensky was assassinated was succeded by a coup de tat by the Russian General, Anton Denikin.
In Africa, Mittelafrika and Portugal went to war over territorial demands.
In Japan, civil unrest forced the Japanese government send in the army and declare martial law in Niigata, Japan. When Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi died in office, Emperor Showa declared that strong democracy must be implimented in Japan to ensure stability in the country. Also in Asia, Korea was granted indepence by Japan’s parlitment and Japan declared that Siberia was where Japan should look for its expansion and exploitation.
The Commune of France during this time was going through a transition of elections, which led to the rise of Commrade Guer In. Which was a relief to many Germans because he was seen as a moderate compared to some of the candidates for a Bolshevik France.
In May, the Commune of France hosted the 3rd Internationale in Paris. All nations with strong leftist governments were invited to attend. A broad range of topics were discussed at the Internationale, the Syndicalism in South America, Italy, India, Spain, and even the United States.
The French declared that they would violently tare down the German Empire from the top downward. The Kaiser reacted angrily by having members of the FUAD arrested and forced them underground. Although outraged, the Internationale decided that it was not the right time to declare war against the German Empire.
The United States was going through some hard times as well. Unrest gripped the nation from the economic recession impacting most of the world. The Berlin Stock Exchange made matters worse as millions of workers lost their jobs. Many Americans were starting to not believe that their government can help them and turned to more extreme alternatives from Jack Reed of the Syndicates of America to Huey Long of the American First Party. The election of 1936 saw Huey Long rise to power which surprised most of Middle America and the syndicates who refused to believe that Jack Reed had lost.
