Well, I've owned EU for a total of 4 hours now, and I have yet to play it. I can't believe the horrible out-of-box experience I am having. Can't get the 1.09 patch to install.

1. Buy game. Install game. No problems.
2. Go to the website to get the latest patch. See version 1.09 NA on the main page, think it might be "North America"
3. Go to the download page and confirm it is actually for North America. (Also learn what BEN stands for).
4. Download it. Won't install. Complains that EU is not installed on my machine.
5. Try starting the game then stopping it. Starts OK, but the patch still won't install. Same thing: EU is not installed on your machine.
6. Check the support boards and FAQ. No help.
7. Pull out my CD to make sure I bought the NA version. CD says "English version." Maybe this means I accidentally got the UK release?
8. Download the UK version of 1.09 patch. Installs right away, no problem.
9. Start EU. Now it complains CD in drive! My CD is installed and spins up. I didn't have this problem in step 5.
10. Uninstall the game, reinstall the game. Still can't run the patchfile. Same problem.

I guess I'll try playing the unpatched game for a while, which pretty much bites because I've read that my games won't be compatible once I get the patch applied.

I'm trying to run EU over Windows Millenium, on an Athlon TBird w/256MB RAM. Any help appreciated.

I hope you are not too pissed off. The North American patch is only a few hours old. 1.09 came out yesterday (I think), but Patric did not get 1.09NA until more recently. Hopefully it'll be figured out. Also, did you make sure that the directory you installed EU to was the same directory you told the patch to install itself to? If not, that might have led to something like what you problem is; it would mess up registry settings for the game.

No - not pissed off. Just disappointed: this seems decidedly amateurish. The type of problems I expect from shareware, not from a boxed product.

As far as the installation directory goes, the patch never gives me the chance to specify one: It goes directly to the error message.

By the way, the game reports version 1.07b when the CD-installed copy is run. Seems to run OK (although I've only spent 10 minutes with it).

patch install problems

I had the same problem with the 1.08 patch when I bought the game. If your CD is black and says "Blackstar" on it, then you need to install the Benelux patch. (Did you buy the game from Compuexpert? That's the version that they sell.) If you use that patch, it should work fine.

Luke,

Good call. Indeed, my CD matches your description, and the 1.09BEN patch installed without a problem. Game is up & running now, and I am hoping for a better experience from here on out.

I had the same problem dpotter reported. Thanks, Luke, for the fix. Who would have known I have the Benelux version? Here, in California! I would like to suggest to the EU people that they put some information on the download page to help people choose the correct patch for their version. North America was my first guess, but I wasn't too surprised when the UK patch installed. Definitely surprised to find out I had Benelux. You Europeans are so complicated! :) Only you guys could make a 60-nation game that's fun, but I feel sorry for the other EU (European Union) trying to impose some order on all this chaos!!

It appears I have a similar situation but unfortunately the patch doesn't resolve the problem I'm having of no music playing during the game even though it is enabled on the options screen. I purchased EU from Compuexpert earlier this week. (CD says Blackstar) The version on the CD is 1.07b. When the NA patch (1.09) claimed I didn't have EU installed I went looking for help and found these forums. I saw this thread and realized I have the Benelux version. I installed 1.09BEN and I still have the problem of no music. The game reports version 1.09 at the start menu. I saw another thread mentioning unusual cd drive letters causing problems. I have my harddisk partitioned using drve letters C through I. I have my main cd drive using L and a cd burner using M. I left the gap between the disk and cdroms intentionally because sometimes I split existing partitions into more than one parttion which causes the drive letter on the first cdrom to switch. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated. Thanks

I had the same problem with the North american version: said that the game is not installed...Then had the same problem with UK version: started up and said that the cd was not in or something...then tried the Benelux version and it too said that the cd was not in...well now I run into the problem that I am running out of options. I know the game is Enlish version(It says so clearly on the cover) but I did buy it through ebay. Which means that it could be from somewhere else. It has a wierd language on it which I can not identify because it is wierd letters. Perhaps I need one of the other patches? This is getting aggrivating! Especially downloading these things with a slow piece of @#$t 56k modem. Is there anyway of determining which patch you need so I dont have to download all of them to find out?

aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhggggggggggg!!!
I have now downloaded all of the patches and none of them work! I even tried the ones in different languages and they didnt work either! What version do I have? Perhaps it is one that does not have a patch yet? I dont know but it is very aggrevating. I looked back on the postage and saw that the guy on ebay that I bought the game from lives in Belarus. What version could he have sent me? It is an English version though. Can some one please help???????

We have no versions released in Belarus. And all our boxes are in latin letters.
It looks as if you have bought a pirated version. This is rather common in eastern europe where pirates print their own boxes.
