I crashed an MP game (DD 1.2) by attempting to conduct an amphibious invasion by clicking on the division instead of the transporting fleet. I understand from various comments that this is a known and common problem.

So I need to know:
1) If any solution to the problem exists.
2) If no solution is available, then the best available work-around. I would prefer not to have to assault by giving orders to the fleet.

Strangely well timed post, I've been experiencing exactly the same problem over the last couple of weeks in the Monday Game VI, and was just about to ask the same question. Any regulars on this forum that know how to workaround this problem or know of any old threads that may deal with this already I would be interested in learning from people that have taken this issue in their stride. As I almost punched my screen tonight.

Cheers,
Scoob.

You may find it similar to the Retreat bug one gets if invading from an Island/ 1 Province.

When your loading your men onto your convoys and shipping them out are you shipping from a piece of land that has more then 1 province or say shipping from somwhere like HongKong or Gibralter that are 1 province masses?

I never have this problem so suppose we must do it differently. I don't understand how you click on a loaded division when it is not visible on the map - please explain.

I don't use the amphibious invasion mission because it gets too weird if the invasion fails. What I do is load the land units onto the transport fleet - either by ordering them to move onto the fleet while it is at sea, or by lciking the load icon on the units when they are in a port with a fleet.

I then move the transport fleet to the jump-off area. The land units are then told to debark by clicking the unload icon on the fleet. The province to be invaded in the indicated with a right click, iirc. So, the land units are never directly selected with a click when unloading. How would you even do that?

Ok, on all occasions, I have been loading my troops via the load button and while the transports are in port. The troops have been loaded from a province adjacent to friendly territory, and then once adjacent to my invasion point I am using the disembark icon (by selecting the transport units) and then clicking on the province I wish to attack.

I have tried this with transports attached to military naval units, and on their own (but obviously accompanied by a seperate stack of naval units in the same sea province). In all instances I am experiencing a ctd, sometimes it is immediately after clicking on the province to attack (i.e. by asking all units on transports to attack)

I then move the transport fleet to the jump-off area. The land units are then told to debark by clicking the unload icon on the fleet. The province to be invaded in the indicated with a right click, iirc. So, the land units are never directly selected with a click when unloading. How would you even do that?

I can also select individual units to attack (say I have 3 stacks of troops loaded, one of 5divs, and 2 of 3divs each), by clicking on the unload icon, in the bottom left hand box (I think this shows in game what units you have in any single province) I then can select any single stack to attack with. However, this still causes a ctd.

In last weeks session, I tried using the amphib assault mission to try and outflank the japanese in their failed attempt at Singapore (unfortunately this gambit failed :( )
When it did, my troops ended up retreating to the attacked province, which I thought would end up losing my troops, however after a period of time, perhaps 7 to 10 days of in-game time, and after my transports had left the sea province I had attacked from (incidentally leaving my stack of retreating troops walking on water) they were 'displaced' back to my nearest province, in that case it was Singapore. After Fox joined me in co-op last night, and took control of my Pacific Operations, I believe he tried exactly the same thing with an amphib on Hawaii, and exactly the same thing happened. Although this was after he ctd'ed initially on the same op, probably because he tried the manual disembark as described above.

That's about the size of it. Anyway, I'm not sure there is any other way of attacking from sea to land with foot troops, other than Para-dropping and avoiding using ships entirely, which of course is a ridiculous proposition.

I was livid last night, not helped because I took some severe beatings in other theatres (Schuer - I WILL seek revenge :D) but because having prepared (over several weeks game-time) for amphib landings on several occasions over the past couple of sessions, I have been prevented from having a possible positive outcome on every occasion. I crash, therefore I do not have the ability to co-ordinate any kind of naval or aeriel support, plus what little element of surprise I achieve is wasted. THAT is frustrating.

Despite being really p!$$3d off last night, I will definitely ensure I have a brand new install between now and next monday and hope that this rectifies the problem. I know there's still a lot of legs in this game, despite how down-hearted my allies may or may not feel at my ability at this point in time.

In the meantime, any advice, support or suggestions for possible work-arounds (as per the original post) will be greatly received.

Cheers,
Scoob. :)

Just seen another thread regarding this issue from someone else, and as it seems to be a well known and ageing bug, what are Paradox doing to resolve this issue?

Personally if it wasn;t for this problem, my recent foray into MP play would have been noticeably less frustrating. ( I have been forced to quit after 6 sessions, 3 of which have been noticeably pointless because of this bug)

Are there any comments from the forum moderators or any developers working on a fix for this bug for the next patch?

Cheers,
Scoob.

The problem has been logged but there's no clear fix or workround yet.

Thanks Andrew. Here's hoping it can be resolved for the next patch. Not being a programmer or such I don't suppose I fully appreciate what's involved in resolving bugs etc. especially in a game that is so involving as HOI.

On an aside, I hope to be back in the Monday VI game, for next monday. Just received all my new core hardware bits, and failing compatibility issues, or problems loading any software ( ) I would like to carry on to the end of the game, despite my dropping out on monday night.

Nick seemed to manage ok as the USA by not trying anything too adventurous. He's going away for two weeks so we'll be needing you back as USA next week.

I work in IT and my experience is that most complex software has thousands of bugs. The usual processes for dealing with these involve testing, logging, triage, prioritisation, fix, workround, release etc. Paradox does all these things too, but like even the biggest software companies - Oracle, Microsoft, etc - they can't do everything at once. A crash bug like this gets the highest priority so we can hope for a fix in the next patch. Don't ask me when that will be though - I don't know and couldn't tell you if I did...
