QUICKNOTE: This is an unfinished scenario. It is a-historical. This post contains information you may wish to read though.

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of AMSTAR.

This is a scenario/mod I am working on. I’ve been working on it for years, more years than EU has existed. I’ve decided to apply my ideas to EU as they actually work well. Here is a map of the last version of AMSTAR before I decided to make it into a scenario.
Linky:

You will note that this scenario is far from done. I hope that it is okay to post this here while I work on finishing it. I plan to give out beta versions as the time goes by. Certain things will get done before others, but the game should be “playable” in not that long of a time.

Here are the maps I’ve finished last night

Europe:

America:

India:

Asia:

There is no Africa map because I am not really sure what to do. Same goes for South America. AMSTAR has always been limited to Europe and the Americas. I had debated, at many points, turning AMSTAR into a nationsim (hence the map from earlier) In other nationsims I’ve debated, I’ve done things like split china in 2, and make Persia colonize India. Hence these maps. I will explain, in short, the “backstory” of AMSTAR.

AMSTAR takes place in an a-historic world based on history. I tend to use the Centennia historical atlas quite often, and I’ve taken real nations from real bits of time and plopped them together. Examples include the Byzantines from 1180, Poland from 1772, Burgundy from 1000, Northern Spain from 1230, and Southern Spain from 1237. Not all the nations fit together perfectly, of course, so some nations represented here never existed in reality. There is a backstory to AMSTAR that is not meant to be a complete explanation, IE, this will not tell you how we got from some point in real history to AMSTAR. Rather, the backstory sets up the stage for what is about to happen and why its happening.

At one time, all of Europe was dominated by The Empire. The Empire ruled with an iron first, but no group dared to challenge it! (ooo, scary!) Anyways, the Poles decided enough was enough, and despite being surrounded on all sides, declared independence. To the surprise of everyone, it worked, and the Empire’s troops were unable to quell the rebels. Other ‘nations’ got similar ideas. Finland, Berbery, the Celts, all broke off from the Empire, and over time, all the other nations in Europe did too. Our story begins on Jan 1 1419, when Bohemia makes a dash for freedom. Bohemia has always been considered one of the Empires core states, and now that it was leaving, it threatened the Empire’s very existence, as all that was left were the cores. A great debate broke out within the Empire as to what should be done. Three options were put on the table. First, to take a firm line, but not to go overboard. In other words, to let them go but not give them the provinces the Empire still held that are technically within the state of Bohemia. This would be similar to the historical precedent, and many feel it would be inadequate. Second, a plan to try to consolidate the base of the Empire. Let Bohemia go, and even give them the disputed lands. Beyond that, turn to other states that are growing disloyal and give them signals that you are willing to play ball and hope they decide to work out their differences within the Empire rather than leave it. This option is also not very popular. The final option, otherwise known as “Option A” is to go all out. Invade Bohemia to show the remaining states that a line has been drawn and you dare not cross it. While this is the most popular option, it could potentially anger Normandy.

Normandy is one of the newest nations in Europe, having just broken off the Empire. Since then it has focused exclusively on building it’s Military, with the intent of single-handedly bringing down the entire Empire. Should the Empire invade Bohemia, Normandy will surly gain a Casus Belli on them, and will almost certainly invade.
And hence, our story begins. :p

There are some fun options. You could try to become France, Spain, or Italy, depending on where you start the game. Certain nations will be more fun to play than others (as will be explained in the nation-by-nation section) First I want to answer some “what’s up” questions from the maps.

“What’s up with the colonies?”
Strange looking, I know. The Empire colonized America itself, however to encourage citizens to move there it assigned each small colony to one of it’s internal states. When the revolutions began and nations began breaking off, they tended to take their colonies with them! The rebellious states still within the empire also have designs on their assigned colonies, as shown on the map. “Quebec” is that part of the Americas colonized directly by the Empire. It is not assigned to any state.

“What’s up with India?”
The Persians are colonizing India. I plan to use Religion, Culture, and Events in combination to help simulate this. In short, they will be mostly successful, at least for the first while.

“What’s up with the red and green lines?”
Some nations on the map ended up with identical colours to their neighbors. Thick red lines are only included to separate them clearly. Green lines show state boundaries. States with arrows pointing to a neighbor mean that neighbor has claimed that state. Circles over a city mean that State wishes for independence.

“What’s up with ‘can become’, and why can’t Rome become Italy?”
This indicates which starting nations can become Spain, France, or Italy. Some can become two, and one nation (Toulouse) can become all 3! Rome cannot become Italy because of the role they play here, as the peacemaker of sorts. They also hold colonies, hence allowing the new Italy (which will inherit Rome) to start off with a presence in the new world.

A little bit on each nation:

HRE - Otherwise known as “The Empire”
The Empire is at the centre of Europe, the centre of trade and culture, and the centre of the game. The scenario starts with the Empire in free fall. While clearly the largest and most powerful nation on the map, it will experience very bad events for the first 50 to 100 years. In fact, the only way to get the revolts to stop is to become Germany, leaving the mantle of the Empire behind.

Byzantium – Otherwise known as “The Eastern Empire”
The Eastern Empire broke off from the Empire early on, and took with it a huge chunk of the Empire itself. Since then, it has seen it’s own revolts. Hungary, the Turks, Syria, Jerusalem and Egypt have all left the Eastern Empire. Unlike the Empire, the Eastern Empire is no in a state of free fall. The rebellions have stopped, and the Eastern Empire has good relations with most of it’s neighbors (save those pesky Turks) The problem here is that while not shrinking, the Eastern Empire is stagnant (low tech development speed)

Poland
I have a soft spot in my heart for Poland. Poland will be greeted with mostly good events. Options for playing Poland include a rampage off into Russia, or going West and trying to be the one who picks up all the pieces from The Emprie.

Finland
Although the name would suggest otherwise, you are in fact, one of two “Russias”. Your unique location allows for the possibility of expansion to the northwest.

Russia
The Southern of the “Russias”, you start boxed in and will have to fight your way out.

Normandy
You start the game as the warmonger, and never really stop being one. Normandy is destined to become known for its military prowess, and its victories on the field of battle. Starting with the seemingly impossible objective of conquering the entire Empire, Normandy might actually have the ability to do just that. Normandy has the best shot at becoming France, and likely will over time.

England or the Celts
At the beginning of the game each of you is given an option to try to work with the other, or to oppose the other. In general, this question will be one you will likely ask yourself the whole game, until one or the other nation is defeated. At that point, you get the option to become the UK, so to speak.

Berbery
Isolated from the rest of Europe, you can find yourself in a quite powerful position if you can use your location to your advantage

Other information:
Most major European nations should start out with at least one colony in the Americas. Exploring beyond this will require events and the passage of time. Africa and South America are the best places to colonize in this scenario, but the colonization aspect of this game has yet to be completed.

I’ve also yet to decide what is going on in Asia, or India. Or for that matter, what happens in the game after 1450/1500! Here is the general line of thinking I have:

I’d like to see at least one (and preferably just one) strong ‘native’ nation. The Incas are in my mind for this, but the Aztecs could also do good service in this position to counter-balance the existing colonization of North America. In short, they would slowly evolve better tech abilities until they are, somewhat, able to match the Europeans.

I’m not sure where I am taking India. I know I want Persia to colonize it, and using events I plan to change the culture and religion of certain provinces over time. The objective would be to have Persia take almost the whole thing before running into very tough resistance in the southernmost areas. After that, India would be a struggle to keep. The only problem is that unlike when the British colonized, Persia is connected directly to India, and those angry Indian hordes will not stop at the Indus river!

China should remain divided for quite a while. A constant struggle between it’s two halfs. I’d like to keep China divided until the end of the game. That is not to say that you could not find other ways to get ahead (IE, colonization)

I have to figure out how, likely using AI files, to make certain nations (those that later become France, Spain, or Italy) to only have very limited colonial development before becoming those nations.

I am going to tinker with Religions quite a bit. Not sure where I want to take it as of yet. Persia should be a different religion from India (Islam VS Hindu) and the two chinas should be a different religion (Buddhist and Confucian) but Japan should be a separate religion from both. Other neighbors may share the same religion however. I am not certain how I want to use the other religions at this point in time.

Comments welcome!! If anyone wishes to help, that is also welcome, ideas are welcome too! Though I could finish this all by myself, it might take a bit of time. I also have to learn how to edit without using the scenario editor.

:)First off all those countries should get different colours, i believe.
Personnally I'd like you do the mod on another map, preferably WATKABAOI, because it has the most provinces. Alternatively MyMAP, because the HRE area is beatifully designed imo.

Further i like the "Empire" idea, and believe youi should have at game start all over the map a few big great empires, which will crumble via events. Then the successor states should be able to form new Empires.

I'd say go heavy. Both on bonuses and bad events. For example, i'd like to see culture and core claiming events, and revolts. Also take a look at Europa Portugalis for ideas about AI behaviour. Look and lend from AGCEEP and WATKABAOI for culture and core events. etc. :)

Thanks for the comment (I was wondering if anyone was reading this!) but much of the AMSTAR story from 1419-1500 is already worked out, as well the country allocation of province areas from europe and north america is pretty solid. I'm a bit iffy on using alternative maps as this is the first scenario I've ever made for, well, any game really as all my others just never really got finished (except for that starcraft one I did for bnet way back when) so I want to keep things simple. There is no reason that, if AMSTAR vanilla is a hit that I could not do an AMSTAR for this ACKPEEP or WATERBOI thing. Actually, any map allowing me to get closer to the original map (at the top of the first post) would likely help. I dont particularly like the way the existing map divides up France and Italy. Ideas are always welcome and will be throughout the development of the game, while I do have some ideas for the other continents, none of it is concrete.

I worked on the scenario again last night and as you can see, I’ve decided the universal loan-size should be a whopping $1,000. I’ve also updated some of the maps:

There is one nation in Africa that should be easy to beat if you want to do that. Africa, however, is full of powerful and angry natives. South America is more colony-friendly, and the Inca are very weak and defeated very easily. Watch out, though, as they are not pagan and hence you have revolt risk! Various parts of Asia have been fine-tuned. I’ve decided to make the north share a religion with Japan, and the south share one with Tibet.

In North America I moved a few things around. I found my one strong native nation. It will be situated on the west bank of the Mississippi. With a tech level of Muslim or China, it will not be a pushover, and events will slowly make it’s tech increase. While it does not start off as a warmonger, eventually it will become a threat to all your colonies in North America. I’ve decided how I want to trigger the creation of Spain, and hence there will be a special event for the Carolina province should Bohemia get a hold of it (and that will be made easier due to events that will cede it should Bohemia stay alive for long enough) The event will allow the new Spain to purchase it from Bohemia, and should they accept (and they should) it will become your new colonial capitol, and get a war tent for building troops.
I’ve also somewhat become more clear on Quebec, I’ve decided I want to make it similar to the USA in that it revolts at some point in a strong way and becomes a strong nation in it’s own right.

On to Europe. While playing the Interregnum scenario, I realized they somehow moved the boundaries of the built-in HRE. If I can figure out how to do this, I will do this. I will need more info, however, on which nations cannot exist in the HRE, which can, and how that is decided. I could, for example, rename a country like Kleves to France and hence allow France to exist within the HRE. More info is needed.
As mentioned earlier, I’ve decided how to trigger Spain – you need to control all the capital cities of those countries involved. This will likely mean conquest of all provinces, unless you get lucky and someone else annexes them first. Due to this second possibility, it should, theoretically, become easier to create Spain in the later game.
Triggering Italy is a little more complex. While it is the same, that you need to control the central cities, the difference is with events and AI files that will cause the two remaining countries (of Tuscany, Venice, and Naples) to fight, fight, fight should one of the three be annexed by one of the other two. This will speed up the possibility of the AI becoming Italy. Remember, destroying Rome (the Papal States) will make becoming Italy impossible, unless you are crafty and just re-name the papal states as a vassal :p. Note that the Papal States can become Italy, but *only* if another nation meets the requirements. If the Papal States is played by a human, and one of the other nations, say Naples, is able to unite Italy, than you the player will get an event to allow you to inherit Naples and become Italy. You, however, cannot become Italy directly, though you do remain the only Italian player with colonization powers.

I’ve also decided more on some of the events that will affect The Empire.

As stated earlier, you will have three choices presented to you within the first few days of the game. You can maintain the status quo, which is the worst option you can pick and will lead to a long, slow, and painful death, but does offer you an “out”; you can fight back, which could lead to a quick and complete death, or could lead to victory; or you could decide to let them go and become a tolerant progressive.
If you let them go, your innovation will go up and centralization will go down. Also, it will trigger a set of “tolerant” events. The first will be that Denmark has decided to go it’s own way. Your only answer to this is “darn”. The second will be that the colonies of claimed by Normandy, Bohemia, and Poland will be handed over to those nations. Your only answer to this is “oh well”. The third event has to do with Holland. If you convince them to stay, the fourth event will never fire. They will want a heck of a lot, $2,000 (you’ll need 2 loans to cover this) and your stability will drop 6 points, but they will stay. It is actually smarter just to let them go, especially since doing so will give them all the provinces Normandy has cores on within your empire, thereby potentially avoiding a bloody war with them. The fourth event has to do with Austria. Their demands are easier to meet, $500 and a 1 point drop in stability. Lastly, if you let Austria go, you will get an event telling you that the government has reached an agreement with all rebels, and that a few other provinces are leaving too. If, you let all of these countries go, you will get a neat event. I will use events and pre-sets to ensure that Bohemia wins the elections for Emperor in a few years after the game starting (assuming she is still alive). Upon this happening, you will be given the option to abandon the old empire and become Germany. This will allow you to avoid many of the bad events that get thrown at the Empire, but will start you off with centralization of 0, and a slider full to the naval side, which is sadly nearly useless for you since your naval tech is behind the others due to years of focus on the army. What this will do, however, is give you the opportunity to build a new nation, and colonize like mad should you wish to.

Picking the warmonger option can be fun too. You’ll almost immediately be plunged into a war with Bohemia and Normandy, Poland is very likely to follow soon there after. You’ll also find all the countries mentioned above that are still within your empire will be met with a very high revolt risk, and should they manage to all break free, even with a single province, that the revolt risk will spread further throughout the Empire, as well your badboy, which starts very high, will shoot through the roof. If you somehow manage to survive this onslaught, you will find it is not over. Your government will demand you re-annex Bohemia, and should you manage to do that, they will demand you take back the second-newest nation in Europe, Normandy. If you manage that, it is still not done, as now they will demand you take back the third-newest, England. They will also demand you re-gain control over the colonies. If you can manage to do all of this, you will be able to start on a quest to rebuild the empire. Remembering that at one time it held all of Europe, you will be encouraged to repeat that success by knocking the various French factions. If you are able to do that, you will next be encouraged to eliminate the Celts, Spanish, Berbers, and Italians. If you can do this, you will have a gigantic empire. You will gain cores on almost every other province in the European area, all the while your government will remind you to leave Poland for last, as there are special plans for it. If you can retake the rest of Europe (Sweden, Norway, Byzantum, Hungary, Egypt, Jerusalem, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, and Both Russias) you will finally be ordered to finish off Poland, and put to end this long-term rebellion in the place it started. Doing so will, literally, wipe the poles off the map, and also reduce the population of the area that was Poland to minimal levels. If you succeed in this, turn off the game and go to bed, you’ve “won” :p

Should you choose to stick with the status quo, you will still experience rebellions, and may still find yourself in a large war. Unlike the warmonger option, the Rebellions will not be over quickly once you “crush” them, but rather will be a more long-term problem, that will grow in severity over time, with events eventually spinning the provinces off. The only positive to picking this option is that should all the rebellious countries break free, you will be given a very unique “out” that will not otherwise appear. Your advisors will recommend that you high-tail it over to the colonies and try to make go at it in Quebec. If you pick this option, the remainder of your nation will become Germany, and you will become Quebec. If you do become Quebec this early, you will get many “Early Quebec” events, that will aid you in trying to take over all of North America.

Apparently, I own a working copy of EU III lol! Click on the link in the first word to find the details :p

Anyway, due to this unexpected development, I may move the AMSTAR scenario over to EU III, or, I may try to make it as a scenario-lite for EU II to get the hang of modding first.

I've decided to finish the scenario in EU II before making it for EU III.

It will be a "lite" version. IE I will make everything I have in mind into a game and post it. I will then test-run it a number of times to see how the AI reacts, and see what players think. I will then make the "rich" version for EU III

Both will be fully playable! I will also release the EU II version, when I am done, to anyone who wants to carry it on in any direction they so wish.

If there really is not any interest I could shelf the idea and once I get used to EU III make it as a scenario there...

Man, if you really want to go and play EU III then go play it.
EU 2 is better imo, but that's only the looks i'm talking about.

Just wanted to see if anyone was reading :p

Will any other maps work with the scenario editor? That'd be the tool I use to make the foundations of the game. If it will, I will certainly make it on a 'better' map.

The scenario editor is pretty much hopeless; it barely even works with the vanilla map. I've never bothered to try it with any other map, though.

Oh please, continue with this :) Sounds intriguing...and don't make a "test" version for EUII and then go on to EUIII :( I can't play EUIII (not mainly because it's...well...bad! But mainly because my graphic card ( my "new", mind you), cannot support EUIII, it can barely manage EUII

Will any other maps work with the scenario editor?
Nope. The game editor crashes during opening in such case.

The scenario editor is pretty much hopeless; it barely even works with the vanilla map.
That is strange. What does everybody have with game editor? I didn't have a problem making a scenario there.
I just abandoned it, because the scenario is then saved in one really huge file and is harder to modify in notepad when making some details which aren't supported in editor.

Looks interesting, can I download it somewhere?
