Anfängerreich: A Novice’s Adventure into an Ahistorical Germany

Hello everyone! Welcome to my first AAR here on the Paradox forums. I’ve wanted to do one for quite some time and, well, no time like the present. Let’s jump into it, shall we?

As you may have guessed from the title, I am relatively new to the world of Hearts of Iron III. With HoI4 on the coming horizon as of this post, I thought I would try to get myself into the current game in order to make the transition (hopefully) a bit easier. I’ve spent that past month reading AARs and doing research to try and grasp the basics of the game, and I feel like I’ve done fairly well for myself.

After doing a short Romania campaign based around [misterbean’s excellent tutorial AAR], I decided I wanted to give the Wehrmacht a try - it seems to be the de facto real introductory experience to the game - and, while I’m at it, I thought I might chronicle my adventures here.

My favorite thing in any of the historical Paradox gsg games is creating strange ahistorical situations. I love creating a world power out of a Native American tribe, or creating a Norse Muslim Caliphate. So, naturally, I’m going to avoid sticking to history wherever I see fit in this AAR.

So, let’s talk ahistorical goals here:

  • The biggest one here is that I want to keep the US out of the war, or in some incredible fringe case, join the Axis.

  • To this end, we will be delaying the war as long as possible, likely until the end of ‘40/beginning of ‘41. This will give us time to drag the US far away from the Allies as we can, and hopefully influence their government into one sympathetic with us.

  • Japan will not be joining the Axis unless the US joins first. We don’t need them waking the sleeping giant on me.

  • Operation Barbarossa is going to be shelved until the Allies are brought to heel. We don’t need a two front war.

  • I’m going to focus on making Germany a naval power, complete with deadly carrier fleets. Why? Mostly because I like carriers, and because it’s the opposite of what happened in reality. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ultimately I hope that I can manage even some of the above goals, but even if I crash and burn, you all will be here to enjoy it with me. Feel free to pitch in and give suggestions between updates - my knowledge of the game is largely theoretical and quite possibly just wrong. I appreciate any corrections or tips you more experienced players can offer.

Let’s get this started shall we? I hope you enjoy.

Ch. 1 - Unternehmen Schlafenderriese

gfJPlrm.jpg

The state of Germany on January 1, 1936. We have a large amount of territory and a powerful industry, but barely enough resources to maintain it. There’s a lot of work to do before we can even unpause the game

zrwY0Fl.jpg

Our current government setup. Germany starts with more efficient laws than most, but we can shift some of our ministers around for better effect:

  • Armament Minister: Hjalmar Schact for a massive +10% IC bonus.

  • Minister of Security: Joseph Goebbels for +5% Leadership.

  • Head of Intelligence: Wilhelm Frick for +5% Espionage.

  • Chief of Staff: Fritz Bayerlein for +10% Supply Throughput.

  • Chief of the Army: Werner von Blomberg for -10% Supply Consumption

This gives us some solid bonuses compared to the original cabinet. Now, on to something far more vital and extensive.

Rm1KGcF.jpg

I’ve set up our Espionage here. As you can see, we have a load of countries we’re about to send spies into, 11 in total, plus our homeland spies. That’s a total of 120 spies we’re going to need to constantly maintain, as part of Unternehmen Schlafenderriese - we want the sleeping giant on our side. This is a massive endeavor that will take some Leadership to maintain, but it will hopefully be worth while.

As you can see in the above image, our spies in the USA are set to support our party - over the years this will slowly align the USA with our political views rather than their current Democratic ones.

We also have spies set on every member of the Allies and Comintern increasing their threat, in order to drive the US (and as a bonus, other nations) away from them and into our corner.

Finally, we are increasing the threat of Canada and Mexico in order to drop the USA’s neutrality so that, eventually, we might be able to persuade them to join our cause. We won’t need to revisit this screen much after this.

7j8iHKh.jpg

Technology screen. Notice the maxed Espionage slider? Yeah, we have a huge network to set up, so we’re going to run it like this for a week or so to make sure we can break through all of our target’s counterespionage nets. We’ll come back here soon to discuss our actual research choices.

OWiG6ZX.jpg

For now, let’s take a look at our Diplomacy. Notice how far toward the Allies America is? We have a lot of work to do to drag them into our corner. The first thing we do is begin to Influence them, spending a point of Diplomatic Influence every day in order to slowly move them toward the Axis.

X8WKqlI.jpg

We’re also going to start setting up some trade agreements, both with our neighbors, the Soviets, and the US. We want our relations to be high with all of those parties for different reasons; our neighbors to speed them into the Axis’ waiting arms, the USA to cause additional drift, and the Soviets so they will leave us alone for as long as possible. It will take several months to get our relations maxed out, but after that it should be smooth sailing.

jY9cDnj.jpg

Next up, let’s take care of our Order of Battle. What a mess. First things first, we Strategically Redeploy all of our units to Berlin for reorganization. At this point we could send a unit into the Rhineland to trigger the Reoccupation, but I want to avoid any potential threat we could be projecting this early on. We also go ahead and delete all of our HQ units save the Berlin Oberkommando and stuff every other unit under it, with the Logistics Wizard von Kieslig auf Kiesligstein in charge to save on supplies. We’ll organize our units into armies and corps once they’re all stacked together.

We have 36 infantry divisions, 35 of which are only 3 brigades strong. Since I’m planning on using the standard 3 inf/1 art that means we need a hell of a lot more artillery.

Germany starts with a heavy cruiser, a destroyer, and a submarine in the queue. They’re almost done, so we’ll let them finish. We queue up 12 parallel artillery builds, for 3 serial runs. We have a little time, so might as well build up some practicals.

And with that, we’re finally ready to unpause! I let it run for a day so it’ll recalculate our IC - we’re sitting at 216, which is pretty good to start with. As a side note, despite having a longer build up time, I’m not going to bother building additional factories. In my test game I did, and was basically bankrupt by ‘41.

We have a lot of IC left to use up, so let’s add some things to the queue. I set up 3 submarines with a serial run of 99. These will just continue being produced until the end of the game - we’re going to use submarines for a lot of convoy hunting and, I don’t know, flanking attacks? Listen guys, I’ll let you in on a secret: I don’t know jack about naval combat in this game. My test games were all land-based, so when the war starts, I’m in for a real treat, I’m sure. At least you’ll all be there with me to enjoy it, right?

I also queue up a run of 8 light cruisers. Our LC tech is mostly up to date, and I’m planning on an armada mostly made up of light cruisers and carriers, so best to start now.

FieNiD6.jpg

Finally, we have quite a few tactical bombers, but not so many interceptors. I queue up a wing of 3 of them to even it out.

I unpause again and sell off some of our excess energy for some dosh. We’re running a huge deficit on metals and rare materials right now, but I want to get a couple laws passed before I start sinking money into them.

On January 6th, we pass Mixed Industry, bringing up our IC efficiency, effectively netting us an additional 17 IC. On January 22nd, we pass Three-Year Draft, maxing out our peace-time laws.

fARWUnO.jpg

By January 29th, our spy network is close enough to complete to shift Leadership away from it. 207 spies abroad, dear lord. If you notice above, our work in the USA is already bearing fruit: the German-American Bund is gaining traction amongst the people. By the 1940 election, they should dominate the government, sending the USA careening toward the Axis.

4YIj2pv.jpg

With Leadership finally devoted to research, let’s talk tech priorities. Number one right now is carrier tech - Germany’s carrier tech is essentially non-existent, so we have a lot of catching up to do. These will be bumped to the top of the queue constantly. I also queue up the techs required to unlock medium armor, and an assortment of infantry and bomber tech to round it out. We’ll start finishing most of these in the summer of ‘36.

I think with that, we can wrap up this first post. Next time, we’ll actually sort out our army and possibly set up some provisionary fronts. Thanks for reading.

BRILLIANT! More plz!
Nice to see that the HOI3 forums have new fresh blood.

Good luck with your AAR, a bit of a naval heavy Germany is always fun IMO. Its quite the balancing act but it gives you so many options its great!

Personally if I wanted to keep the USA out of the Allies as much as possible I would increase threat on the UK, or maybe France. The UK is close to the USA as well with Newfoundland and because they are much stronger than Canada or Mexico it should have more impact. Also they are already Allies members so there's that.

I'm actually increasing threat on all of the Allies, including the UK! I've been given the impression somewhere there is a compounding effect for increasing the threat of multiple nations that are in a faction. Currently the UK has the highest threat with America (a whopping 0.5%), so I think you are right about them being the most directly efficient.

Chapter 2: 1936

DQ41tgA.jpg

Before we get started, I neglected to mention last time that I slipped a Rocket Test Site into the queue, so we can start researching the relevant techs when they become available.

Now, when we left off, I was talking about reorganizing our armed forces. I split everything into two army groups: Heeresgruppe West and Heeresgruppe Ost. Each army group has one army, with West controlling four corps, and Ost three.

T8Rd6HN.jpg

I’ve deployed them to form a skeleton front against both France/Belgium/Netherlands and Poland. Both fronts will need to be widely expanded, but I wanted to get things in place now so I could easily bulk them up later.

On Feb. 5th, the heavy cruiser Graf Spee is ready to be deployed. I stick it in Wilhelmshaven with the rest of the fleet. I’ll sort out the Kriegsmarine later.

RbtUhsv.jpg

20 days of 10% less money and still a large change for dissent? I’ll just take the second option, guaranteed dissent but no other penalties. The dissent will go away before it matters.

By February 13th, our skeleton fronts are in place.

l9dQN3X.jpg

Here is our western front - 20 provinces wide, with 1 division stationed in each province. As many Defensive Doctrine commanders are stuffed into these formations as possible. This front will be expanded and entrenched significantly before we declare war.

usDDUnr.jpg

The eastern front. This is much less complete, and I have only placed divisions here as placeholders so I don’t forget. This will also see much expansion, though with much more aggressive division builds in mind.

I also go ahead and organize the Luftwaffe into 4 wings of 3 planes each. Most of them are tactical bombers, but we’ll expand our interceptor corps soon.

We let the game run for a while, still making small trades with the Americans and Soviets to prop up our relations. Italy puppets Ethiopia on March 13th, 1936.

8gGlcfI.jpg

I’ll take that month of 5% leadership, thanks.

March 24th, the pre-queued destroyer is complete and deployed.

March 28th, our relations cap out with the Soviet Union.

March 31st, our pre-queued submarine is done.

Vk0njAb.jpg

April 18th, the first batch of artillery is ready. I attach them to infantry divisions lacking them.

And finally, on April 29th, our relations with the USA are maxed out.

3JF5QsQ.jpg

Look at that drift. They’re putty in our hands. This means I can finally stop pausing the game every week to send out a new offer, and let it speed along for a while. Thank god.

B37pIqY.jpg

I also finally bring us into the green on all of our resources. This lets me free up some more leadership for research.

Our first round of Infantry tech finishes in May. I stick some artillery research and land doctrines in the queue, which pretty much rounds out all of the ‘36 and below tech. I stick a ‘37 submarine tech at the end to use up the extra points.

AWjZ6YQ.jpg

The current tech queue, for those that are interested.

The first of our new interceptors rolls off the line in June. It’s dropped into Berlin with the rest of the Luftwaffles.

In July, we finally finish our Light Tank research, and Medium Tanks are dropped into the queue and bumped to the top. We want them ASAP so we can start churning out proper Panzer divisions!

CPDxutv.jpg

Gee, I wonder what event just fired? The Spanish Civil War starts on July 10th, and we intervene on behalf of the Nationalists. If they win, we might be able to secure another ally and force France into a two-front war.

Ten days later, another plane is finished, and I start queuing up some infantry divisions. We’re going to need a lot of them to fill out our armies. I add them as reserves to save on IC, because we aren’t demobilizing until the whole world is burning, so it doesn’t matter!

ISvMVFh.jpg

One step closer to our glorious flying Kriegsmarine. The next tech is added to the queue.

July 28th, our second wave of artillery is done. We should have complete infantry divisions by the end of the year.

oPFmzXv.jpg

September 11, our Rocket Test Site is finished and placed in Leipzig, hopefully far enough away from the bombings to stay intact.

In October, we unlock the Carrier doctrine tree. They all get placed in the queue. Infantry starts rolling off the line in November, and they go to the Polish front. Our last artillery run is finished as well, freeing up a huge chunk of IC. I queue up another wing of interceptors to celebrate.

VKkXwZs.jpg

On December 3rd, our first set of Light Cruisers are launched. This is the beginning of a new age for the Kriegsmarine, one that I really hope won’t end up at the bottom of the ocean. Another set of 8 are commissioned.

The year closes out uneventfully, but we’ve accumulated a bunch of finished infantry divisions. As we build more, I’ll start to restructure our western and eastern fronts, but for now they’ll remain in Berlin.

Join me next time as we journey into 1937 and inch ever so carefully closer to world domination!

Looking good, but from the screenshots it appears you have forgotten to fire the "re-occupy the Rhineland" decision. That drop in neutrality and thus increased producion is always good isnt it? I mean you are increasing threat on the enemy so why not get the most out of your production and things.

I had actually been purposefully avoiding the decision because I was convinced it would have a negative effect on my plan with the US, but I just tested it and it looks like it doesn't affect my relations with them at all! That's what I get for making assumpions I guess!

Unless you go overboard with ahistorical DOW's I woudn't worry about the Yanks too much. Japan will drag them in at some point and they'll sit tight until then.

Whoops! What a delay! I apologize, I got very sick for a weekend and lost a ton of steam, and then got addicted to Aurora 4x for a while. Regular updates should resume shortly!

Chapter 3: 1937

A note before we begin: I had been avoiding launching the Reoccupy the Rhineland decision because I was convinced it would impact my attempts to drive the USA away from the allies, but after some urging from user sebas379, I tested it and it seems I was wrong, so I’m going to go ahead and click the button. We gain some money and manpower, and our neutrality drops! Now, on with the show.

It’s January 1st, 1937. Let’s do a quick rundown of how things are going after our first year before continuing, shall we?

First things first, let’s check in on Unternehmen Schlafenderriese.

QRP0Iao.jpg

Our party has 13% popularity in the USA. Not too shabby after just a year. We’re well on tract to a German-sympathetic election in ‘40. We also aren’t having any problems maintaining spies in all of our targets, though it’s required a fair amount of leadership slider fiddling.

xNlSZyO.jpg

The USA is drifting towards us pretty solidly now. I notice our relations dipped, so I offer a small trade agreement to hopefully return them to 200. Britain is currently their largest threat with a whopping 1%, and their neutrality has only dropped two points for the whole year. At this rate, actually getting them to join the war seems improbable unless we can force an Allies war declaration on ourselves, but we’ll see.

I remember from my test game that Japan ends up taking some events that drive their threat way up, so I add them to our espionage campaign to increase their threat and narrow the neutrality gap for the US. I will gladly trade Japan as an ally for a fully neutral America if it comes down to it.

Since we took the Reoccupy event, I also place some spies in Austria supporting our party, so we can potentially annex them a little early and get that delicious entire country’s worth of cores.

zxrQcGV.jpg

Our current research. Medium tanks are actually due to be done tomorrow, so we will soon start pumping out panzer divisions.

KOdOGHD.jpg

Meet our panzer divisions. They’ll be tough nuts to crack, and serve as the hammer to break through our enemies lines. I queue up four whole corps worth divided between two runs. We may need more, but this will get us started.

chTmTnI.jpg

And these are our mobile divisions. Once our panzers punch through the enemy lines, these guys will rush through to close the gap, followed by the tanks and reserve infantry to hold the line. I queue a couple corps worth of these, as we’ll only need them on the offensive.

D8k9vlV.jpg

Stalin purges the officer corps, destroying his military leadership. This is only good news for us; hopefully it will remain decimated by the time we engage the Red Behemoth.

2RpOkm3.jpg

On January 26, we gain the ability to construct carriers. I immediately queue up the relevant techs, as well as put 4 carriers at the top of the production queue. This first run will be done in ‘39 - I leave the CAGs at the bottom of the queue, they’ll still probably be finished before their carriers anyway.

KFbEmY3.jpg

On May 2nd, the Spanish Civil War ends in a Republican victory. Unfortunate, but I think that’s usually how it plays out.

O2rbKvA.jpg

And on May 26th, we gain the possibility to invite Japan into the Axis. We will not, however, be doing, likely ever. The Japan is going to antagonize the US greatly, and we don’t want to be associated with that if we can help it.

Our officer ratio is pretty miserable right now, but since I’m not planning on doing any fighting for a few years, I’m not going to devote any leadership to it yet. I’m planning on spending most of 1940 doing upgrades and using most of my leadership on officer training to catch up.

It’s July now, so why don’t we check in on a few things?

gIZxAC3.jpg

29% popularity for the German-American Bund? Very good. This part of our campaign is working.

zQr5UH5.jpg

A solid 6.44 point drift. They’re moving quickly into neutral ground at this point, hopefully enough to stay out of the war. Their neutrality remains stubbornly high, however, despite all of our attempts to drop it. We can only hope Japan starts to pull some shit soon.

bQeYkwx.jpg

Only 13% support for the NSDAP in Austria right now; we need 40% to trigger the Anschulss early. I have my doubts that we’ll be able to reach that before March 1938, but we’ll keep the spies there just in case.

j5p1Baa.jpg

We have a significant amount of fresh infantry divisions sitting in Berlin, so I think it’s time to do some reorganizing of our western front.

UDvtNh5.jpg

The finished product. Heeresgruppe West now controls three armies, each with three corps. Each border province has two divisions stationed in it; eventually this will be expanded further. In fact, I kind of regret doing this now, because I’m going to have to go in and reorganize everything at least one more time, but, oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

August 18th and our first round of carrier techs finishes. I queue up another set of 4 carriers; this should comprise most of our fleet, but it’s going to suck up most of our IC too. Choices have to be made, and we still have time to flesh out our ground forces.

KBnHZWQ.jpg

September 8th, 1937 Japan declares war on Nationalist China.

kaom4PG.jpg

Diplomacy pane updated one day later. This is why I avoided inviting Japan into the Axis, and will continue doing so unless I can finagle the Americans in with us first. Yesterday, the USA had 98% neutrality and their highest threat was France at 1.8%. They dropped a full 13 points of neutrality and Japan skyrocketed in threat. If we associated ourselves with them, the USA would run far, far away from the Axis...which is exactly what we do not want.

In October, our next set of Light Cruisers finishes. I dock them with the rest of the Kriegsmarine, and I don’t queue up any more quite yet. I need to make sure our land forces get some love next.

4ndlvdL.jpg

Our espionage campaigns are really starting to take a toll on our research. I cut Austria out of the program; party support isn’t raising fast enough for it to matter at this point.

ESVGyfN.jpg

November 30th, Japan annexes Shanxi. They seem to be progressing according to script.

December 9th, Sinkiang joins the Comintern, I assume out of fear of Japan.

Our first panzer division is completed December 29th; the perfect way to sound out the year! It’s stationed in berlin for now, until I can fit it into our battle lines.

Japan seems to be doing well in China. Hopefully this will drive the USA further into our corner. I suppose we’ll see in ‘38.

Until next time friends!

Jay an update :) Don't worry, delays happen.

Yes, Japan is going to rack up threat with their attack on China, that might have some impact on the US, but not enough of course. Still, it will be nice. Also keep in mind Italy triggers a US event if Axis and going to war.
What would be REALLY good for you now, is if the British make a stand at the Vienna Diktat. Yes, its early war, but you can hold off the French easily and I think you have the troops to deal with it. And because it would be a British DOW, the USA would be more threathened by the Allies AND Italy would join the fray right away.

Assuming I could hold out long enough to get on my feet, an Allied aggression would be perfect! Because I'm delaying things and letting threat build up, I believe it's possible as well, unless I'm incorrect about the game mechanics. I probably won't trigger the Vienna Awards until post 1940 just for that reason, in fact; I'm willing to put off the territorial gains for a little while to try and give myself the biggest advantage possible.

Chapter 4 - 1938 & 1939

January 1st, 1938. I won’t bore you with the same set of overview screenshots as the previous years, so here’s a quick summary of where we’re at:

  • The German-American bund is up to a whopping 39%. We are almost guaranteed a sweeping Fascist victory in the 1940 American election.

  • The Americans are also drifting toward the Axis at a rate of 9.8 a month - I think it’s in months, don’t quote me on that. A few more aggressive acts from Japan or the Allies and we may have the Sleeping Giant on our side after all.

  • Japan, Italy, Manchuko, and Ethiopia all qualify for Axis status, but I’m holding off for now, to minimize the potential threat impacts.

  • Realizing that I misread the decision description, I set spies back to work in Austria supporting our party. We’ll take the Anschluss as soon as it is available - that entire country’s worth of cored land is too good to put off.

  • Our production queue is focused on getting two fleets worth of carrier’s out, with whatever’s left going toward our expensive-but-vital armor and mobile divisions.

Alright, now that we’re all caught up, let’s get on with the show!

dx05iRd.jpg

Well look at that. Austria getting this event means we can immediately annex them, three months ahead of schedule. How fortuitous!

0jhggCF.jpg

Germany grows. Our base ICC went from 144 to 163 - not a small jump at all. Our threat didn’t even raise very much.

lBwcoUy.jpg

At the end of January, Finland starts to mobilize. What the what? Their threat re: the USSR is over 50%, so I assume they’re getting skittish about the Red Army.

Starting in February, we could claim the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia, but as I said earlier, we’ll hold off for now. It’s relatively little territory, and I don’t want to risk the illusion of my neutrality.

March 1st the next batch of Carrier techs finishes, but we can’t afford to queue up more boats now - our armor divisions are too vital. Once our ground forces are more complete, I’ll aim for a 3rd and possibly 4th fleet.

OEaPJZG.jpg

I hate running a fuel deficit, because this happens. Everyone wants to sell me fuel. Don’t worry, I have plenty, go away.

In April, Romania mobilizes. Again, fear of the Soviets appears to be the reason.

Late may, Japan takes the Chinese coast and forms Mengkukou. Unfortunately, this seems to have no effect on their threat vs the Americans.

It’s June, so I take a moment to review our progress. Not a lot interesting has happened so far this year, outside of the rising tensions against the Soviets. The German-American Bund falls back down to 34% support, a dead tie with the Democrats. Threat-wise, the big boogeymen right now are the USSR and Japan - all the majors save Italy and ourselves view them as huge threats (the de jure Axis members view France as the largest threat, I assume due to proximity).

Our panzer divisions are slowly but surely rolling off the assembly lines. The massive amount of IC being hogged by our carrier construction is putting a huge hamper on our ability to produce ground forces - hopefully, however, it will be worth it.

July and August pass uneventfully, mostly consisting of me micromanaging trade deals to keep my relations with the USA up. September sees the next batch of carrier techs finish. By March of next year we should be caught up on our carrier designs - most excellent.

I miss the screenshot, but Afganistan is mobilizing too. I refuse to stop raising the USSR’s threat, which might make some wars outside our sphere inevitable.

0CqO7vn.jpg

I don’t miss this one though. I wonder what’s going to happen if Poland and the Soviets get into it before I take the Danzig decision? I’m hoping I don’t have to find out, but I’ll roll with whatever punches I have to.

amsoAMt.jpg

Turkey joins in as tensions in the East rise.

December 31st hits without a whole lot of interesting things happening - it was a relatively slow year for us, though it seems like everyone neighboring the Soviets is scared shitless. I’m not sure if this is going to mean war or not, but we’ll see.

I do some peeking around before the year turns to see what things are looking like.

XJz5Mqy.jpg

The USA’s drift is slowing down the closer they get to us. Also, something important I’ve been forgetting to pay attention to, their drif toward the Allies is very close to ours, netting only a 1~ point drift per month towards the Axis. The UK is influencing them now as well, in a desperate bid to prevent them from joining us. All will be solved upon the ‘40 election cycle, however.

...though on that note, I zoned out and stopped paying attention to my spy count, leading to a shortage, which means I have to pause our research while we fill our espionage corps back up. Whoopsie.

I could end it here, but that would make this update a little short, so let’s press on and see if we can find something interesting in 1939, shall we?

We get this event on January 19th. Hello three months of bonus IC!

Finally, on March 24th, our first two groups of carriers are ready. They’re still waiting on their CAGs, but this is the start of a powerful naval force for us. God I hope so, these things ate up a ton of IC for much too long.

I’ll take all the spy bonuses I can get, our extensive espionage program is coming down to the wire at this point. Only a little over a year and a half left.

We get hit with a 20 day leadership penalty in May, much to my chagrin. Our research is already suffering thanks to our espionage, I don’t need any more penalties.

For a brief moment, we’re back in the green in all categories! I’ve been running small deficits on rare materials and money basically this entire time - though they were small enough to maintain them for years if it came down to it.

We’re completely caught up on carrier techs as of June, so I stick another fleet’s worth in the queue - just the one. We need to finish up our ground troops and I just can’t afford the IC to do much else.

Oh, hey, something interesting! It looks like France is going to lose some colonial territory to Turkey. I’m okay with this; anything that weakens our eventual enemies is good in my book.

Our first mobile divisions finish on the 27th of August. We’re nearing the end of our current queue for armor and mobile, which will allow me to finally finish bolstering both fronts with infantry.

We start churning out infantry again in late October. We need around 35 more divisions, at least, so best get started now.

November brings us Heavy Tanks, but I’m not sure I’ll ever actually use them. Medium tanks are a bit more balanced, and we need the speed over the durability right now. They might prove useful against the Russians eventually, though.

December 31st, 1939. Our first CAG rolls off the lines and gets stationed with the Navy.

We’re more or less deadlocked at this point as far as getting America to drift toward the Axis. The UK has currently stopped influencing them, but I get the feeling they’re going to ping-pong around where they’re at now until we can gain the similar ideology bonus. The German-American Bund is completely dominating the political scene in the USA, with a whopping 43% support.

Our tech is mostly on schedule, though the coming year we’re going to have to devote a massive amount of Leadership toward officers, as our current percentage is an abysmal 53%.

Our production is going well, but as you can see we’re going to need to focus heavily on upgrades and reinforcements before we’re ready for war.

We have a huge amount of armor in Berlin, and an equally massive amount of boats in Wilhelmshaven. I promise I’ll start sorting that out next update, if for no other reason than to break up the monotony.

With that, I think we can ring out 1939 and this update. Next time, we sort out our troops and hope for a coup in the American elections! See you then.

Holy shit thats an insane amount of tanks. You are aware most of the German army was infantry right? You are going to run out of fuel really really quickly with this force, even conquests will be hard pressed to keep that force fueled.

A whole panzer army in 1938? You could shatter France in less than a month with that force. But, understand the US is the main target. Good so far, I'll be watching this.

Be careful with that many panzers. In DH, I once built a huge panzer army like yours and almost instantly began running out of oil. I doubt HoI III will be any kinder towards that.

So I'm getting the feeling I maaaaay be in trouble once I start really using all of these tanks. That's okay though, I'll roll with whatever punches I've set myself up for - that's what this AAR is for after all! Hopefully it will serve as a warning for other new players who are considering a similar strategy.
