Annex Scotland?

I'm playing as England, IGC 1.8.
Why can't I annex Scotland? They've
been a vassal for well over 10 yrs.

What is preventing this.

I'm vexed. I'm terribly vexed.

It's not that they refuse, "annex" isn't
even highlighted in the Dip menu. They are +200.
I could probably make them taxpayers quicker
by conquering them, but I'd like to save all
my whoop ass for the French.
 
You should keep them as vassal for a time. Vassals can be very helpful because during war they often create diversion attacking a different target than yours. With France, I saw many times Savoie and Lorraine (vassals) attacking Milan and Cologne who were at war against me (alliance with Spain). I was attacking Spain, not these minors. So my vassals were helpful this time.

I know if you do not have a big country like France or Spain, etc., who have a large population basin to raise armies, it could be a better idea to annex.

But I do not understand your prob. I did not appear to me.

Are you still in an alliance with you as the leader?

Do you still have a royal marriage?

I think you still need all these, just as before.

Also, are either of you at war with anyone? I've noticed that the Annex button often is grayed out if I or the other nation are not at peace.
 
I'm in an alliance, but I'm not the leader.
There is no royal marriage, but that selection
is also grayed out. Dow, cancel vas., exchange,
and loan are the only ones that aren't.

I've only been playing a week and this is my first
attempt at diplomatic annexation. I was playing
the Russians before and they used your more
violent methods of annexation.
 
Could religion be a factor?I know that england becomes protestant long before Scotland.Scotland tends to go straight from catholocism to calvin(reformed).
Also royal marriages are not a factor since once they becom your vassel your RM never runs out or is never renewable.It just simply isnt an option.

Do you have the same religion? (What is the year ?)

I don't know if to be or not leader of an alliance can affect your relation with Scotland.

Ok.. I've read nearly all the threads on England and Scotland here.. Why? Why? Would you waste your time trying to politically annex Scotland? Attack them the first year of the game. You will be able to take over Scotland before the end of the year. Scotland has no allies in the first few months of the game. Your Fortifications will hold Scotland in the Marches. And if France attacks ignore them intil you take over Scotland. Don't waste time and money on the political system. Except for Military Allies.
 
Especially if you're Britian. Or you can leave them be and prepare for the French attack.

I have yet to play a game where I could annex the closest allies diplomatically.

THe biggest one I got was playing as France I was allied with Poland, and suddenly their kind died and I got the throne. And all of Poland. Weird looking map.

I ignore diplomatically annexing anyone anymore.

I have trouble getting scotland early though.
1) The outnumber England and I have to waste 2 or 3 months getting troops from Calias.

In the last game I just waited till France or Spain went to war and joined in. France offered me 3 provinces in the peace treaty. They had nothing but minimal fortresses everywhere which I just stormed.

The year is 1515. Scotland has been a vassal since 1503.
We're both still catholic. The reformation hasn't
started yet.

I totally agree it would been have easier to just conquer
them outright. I've only had this game a week. I played
100 yrs of Russia GC, kind of as an extended tutorial
to learn the basics without having to worry too much
about diplomacy and colonization. Now I'm playing
England to learn the ins and outs of being more of a
diplomatic sea power. I just don't understand why
I don't even get the option to annex the Scots.
I've been scanning faqs and these posts and just
can't find the answer.
 
I've annexed Scotland diplomatically in the past, so I know it can be done. I just can't remember all the details now. I do recall that we were in the same alliance with me as the leader. And we were at peace. Don't know if that's the difference.

Thanks Olaf. You always seem to be around 24/7
to answer newbie questions.

As for the alliance thing, we're not now, but once
were. THey p!ssed me off too when the French landed
in southern England and their 25k troops didn't
lift a finger to help. I'm not real up on the
mechanics of alliance. I'm in one with the Poles
and Spaniards.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. I may just
restart the game. I'm sure all things will become
clear sooner or later just by playing. I hate
to restart, though. Even though the Poles were my
allies, I was getting a big kick watching the
Teutons kick their behinds. They had already
taken four provances from them.
 
When I played England in the GC the first thing I did was getting Scotland into a military alliance w/me. Relations do kinda suck off the start (IIRC) , but most likley you will get the alliance. I was able to annex Scotland at the end of the 10 vassal time (or was it 20..hmmm) fortunatley for me by the time I annexed them they already had legal councils in all their provinces (now thats some fast research).

I suppose I was one of the luckier ones to annex early on.All I remember was every year I sent a dip. w/ a letter of introduction until I hit +200 relations.The following year I offered Vassalization.They accepted that proposal. Then a little later keeping relations always over +190 during the time of vassal. I offered annex , and they accepted.So I guess don't ignore them for no more that 2 years if you want to annex them. The Scots love the attention :).
 
I havn't red all the replyes but I had the same problem when I wanted to annex Hansan :( ( I was playing Sweden). I had 200+, it was my vassel for over 30 years and i had a royal marrige. I looked almoast every year after the 10 first for the buttum. so what is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!:mad:

I've done just about exactly the same thing. It must be the alliance thing. I'm already in one alliance. Can't
I be in two? I havn't studied the alliance part of the
documentation closely yet.
 
I've had the same experiences. Eventually, though I'm not sure what triggers it, annexation becomes an option, very rarely on the 10 year mark.

Perhaps Paradox could speak to this ... though they might want to keep it shrouded in mystery. I kinda like it that way. The other leaders are not robots, I like the inconsistencies, its real.
