So, on a number of occasions, I have had a retreating army annihilated. This seems to only happen when I order them to retreat before the battle is over. Any one know what determines if this will happen?

As an example, I am Brandeburg and have an army in Silesia which I control. Poland attacks from Posen (which I own but they now control). My army is getting close to breaking, so I order them to retreat to Berlin. They instead get annihilated...

If you order your soldeirs to turn back on your opponent and run away from the battlefield they become quite an easy target and can get massacred. Sounds quite realistic to me. But as far as I remembered I had my army anihilated even when they stood until the battle ended. Tey were vastly outnumbered though.

Yesterday I got my best Russian leader (untill now) Glinski annihilated. So I lost him and 50 canons. It happened in Sibir and I already holded 4 of the 5 provinces including there capital. Aaaaaaaaahr, why didn't I just offer peace for three provinces and not go hunting for the total annexation.:(

Watch out for enemy cavalry. If you retreat with decent moral left you may lessen the effects, but if you start losing to an enemy army with overwhelming cavalry superiority you will take heavy casulaties on the retreat. Of course, should you get out in one piece you may be unlucky and the enemy will pursue and destroy you in a second battle. Try to fight enemy cavalry forces in marsh or mountain (although not much you can do in the Russian steppes except build significant amounts of horse yourself)

A side question here...

Does the Ottoman military suck as much as I think they do? I started a Turkish GC last 2 nights ago. I noticed that the stats of my army is 3/1/1/ IIRC (I'm at work right now)My question is how much success am I going to see vs. any/all German countries with stats of 2/2/2. As it is right now I fear revolts....and thats bad.

On another side note does Turkey have a handicap when it comes to colonizing? I took over the Marmalukes,Iraq & Persia early on. I am now trying to colonize India for all that $$$$$$$. Problem is that I rarely succesfully colonize a province. And only slightly do better w/ trading posts. I know it is better to place a TP then colonize, but I am having a tough time.
Am I missing something?
Any suggestion?

Xanadu, Turkey gets a morale benefit which is more important than fire or shock, as their troops stay in the field long after every one else has run away. This gives you a huge boost early. You also get a higher startingh land tech than the others, so strike early and often.

As for India, it's hard to colonize for any country, I think England and maybe France get a slightly better chance, but even with them it's a slow frustrating experience. You might want to annihalate the natives to improve your colonization chance. Or you could try Africa, not as rich as India, but there are some good Ivory provinces, and a couple of sugar islands. India can cost a fortune to settle, so it might not even be worth the money if your chances are low.

Ya I have seen Turkey in Africa when I don't play them. I just wanted to try a different course. I figured it wasn't that much different.I figured my % change would be different 'cause I am not going as the norm in Africa , but geez...this is drastic as I see it.The year is 1560 right now ,and I have land tech.level 10 so I can explore w/all armies. I know conquistidors help w/colonizing, but since I don't have one does just the presence of a military unit in a parovince that I want to colonize help my chances any?

For some reason it took me 5 tries to get Table colonized as France. Quite disconcerting when Cartier died before the colony was founded forcing me to retrieve an explorer from North America.

Hello, fellow Sultans! :) I am playing as Turkey in the GC (year ~1610) and am not having much difficulty colonizing the eastern coast of Africa, especially after burning all of the Portuguese TPs. ;) I also had some TPs in present-day Canada, but those were burned by the French.

Since trading posts are for trading purposes, do you suppose your trade level might affect your chances? I am at trade lvl 7 as of now.
